Umhlanga Rocks Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) was notified by SAPS, Durban Metro Police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate that there will be sporadic road closures along the M4 between Zimbali and the Durban ICC this morning.
According to reports, Walnut Road, between Bram Fischer Road and Dr AB Xuma Street, is closed for the duration of the summit. The road is expected to reopen on Tuesday, 18 August.
For anyone travelling through the Durban CBD, this means it's worth allowing extra time and being prepared to use alternative routes.
With heads of state and government attending the summit at the Durban International Convention Centre, motorists should also expect heightened security and possible traffic delays around the ICC precinct as official delegations move through the city.
So, what's bringing all these important leaders to Durban?
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a regional organisation focused on cooperation, integration and development across Southern Africa. Rooted in the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), it was established in 1980 by nine founding states.
SADCC was created largely to coordinate development projects and reduce the region's economic dependence on apartheid South Africa.
On 17 August 1992, the organisation was transformed into SADC when the Declaration and Treaty were signed in Windhoek, Namibia.
Today, SADC has 16 member states: Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Its headquarters are in Gaborone, Botswana.
The 46th Ordinary Summit will focus on the theme: ‘Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World’.
For Durban, it's a big moment on the African calendar. For motorists, it's also a good day to plan your route carefully!
