Durban's comedy scene brings the funny this weekend

Need a proper laugh? Who doesn’t?!

If a satirical puppet pulls your strings, or you prefer the more traditional stand-up comedy antics, Durban has something to make you smile.

Two major comedy productions are heading to local stages, featuring some of South Africa's biggest names in comedy…and one puppet who's far more famous for causing trouble than following the script.

Here's what's coming.

1.    Puppet pandemonium with Chester's Got Talent 

If you've never seen Conrad Koch live, now's the perfect time to change that.

South Africa's internationally acclaimed ventriloquist returns with his brand-new production, Chester's Got Talent - and judging by its recent success, it's already one of the country's hottest comedy shows.

Fresh from winning the coveted Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival, the production has earned standing ovations and rave reviews.

What’s the premise? 

Imagine a talent competition... but only for puppets. Of course, there's one major problem.

Chester Missing - South Africa's most outspoken puppet - has absolutely no intention of following Conrad Koch's instructions.

Instead, audiences are treated to complete comedic chaos as Chester goes head-to-head with a wonderfully eccentric cast including:

• Gunter the German mosquito
• Hilton the melodramatic ostrich
• DJ Hoodie (yes, a puppet DJ)
• Mr Dixon, the long-suffering schoolteacher
• A surprise mystery guest

Plus a fun twist as the audience gets to decide who wins, making every performance slightly different.

Suitable for all ages, it's the perfect family night out... provided your family appreciates a little cheeky humour.

2.    Catch the Durban Comedy Wave

If stand-up comedy is more your style, then make a beeline for Sibaya on Saturday, 25 July.

The Durban Comedy Wave is bringing together four of South Africa's funniest comedians for one massive evening of laughs at the iZulu Theatre.

Guiding the night is popular presenter Darren Maule, whose quick wit and effortless crowd interaction make him the perfect host for the evening.

Taking to the stage are:

• Uncle Peru, one of Durban's most-loved comedy personalities
• Muthu Murugan, whose sharp observations have earned him the title of the Indian King of Comedy
• Nabeel Peer, renowned for his hilarious impressions and razor-sharp storytelling
• Mo Vawda, one of South Africa's fastest-rising comedy stars

Expect relatable stories, cultural comedy, hilarious observations and plenty of moments that will have the entire theatre laughing together.

Whether it's date night, a catch-up with friends or simply an excuse to escape reality for a few hours, this promises to be one of Durban's funniest nights of the year.
