Durban's informal markets are getting a fresh new look, and it's more than just a facelift.
As the city continues investing in its trading hubs, eThekwini Municipality has announced the launch of Phase One of the R29-million Mansel Road Market Development, alongside the official handover of trading permits to 53 newly selected Church Walk traders.
The latest investment forms part of a broader drive to modernise informal markets across Durban, creating better facilities for traders while making these bustling shopping destinations more attractive and accessible for locals and visitors alike.

A boost for Durban's small businesses
For many Durban residents, informal markets are where communities connect, and entrepreneurs build businesses, with everything from fresh produce and clothing to handcrafted goods and everyday essentials.
The upgraded Mansel Road Market has been designed to make trading easier and more sustainable, with improved infrastructure, modern ablution facilities, and ongoing maintenance and cleaning services.
The handover of trading permits also enables 53 Church Walk traders to operate legally, helping them build long-term businesses in the heart of the city.
Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, notes:
“Our informal traders are not only business owners, but they are also job creators, breadwinners and drivers of local economic growth. Through strategic investments such as the Mansel Road Market Development, we are creating safer, dignified and business-friendly trading spaces that enable entrepreneurs to grow their businesses while improving the lives of their families.”
Part of a bigger transformation
Across eThekwini, the municipality has been upgrading informal trading spaces to improve safety, cleanliness and the overall visitor experience. One of the latest projects is the Tongaat Early Morning Market, a much-loved North Coast institution that's currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment.

The upgrades include:
- A brand-new roof replacing the ageing asbestos structure
- Improved rainwater drainage
- Plumbing upgrades
- Painting and general maintenance throughout the market
While construction takes place, traders have temporarily relocated to the Parks Open Field on Edmund Morewood Street, ensuring the popular Saturday market continues operating as normal.
