Come hungry, Durban.
The Durban Street Food Festival is back from 4 to 6 September, transforming The Pavilion Shopping Centre into one giant foodie playground where bunny chows sit happily alongside gourmet burgers, matcha drinks, seafood pasta, Indian street food and sweet treats from around the world.
But this is just another food market.
Time Out Durban caught up with Georgios Kretsos, founder of Uber Cool Events, to get the inside scoop on why this festival has become one of Durban's favourite annual gatherings… and why this year's edition promises to be the biggest yet.

Cooking up something great
It all started with one simple idea…
Back in 2015, Kretsos wanted to create something Durban didn't really have. Rather than another weekend market, he envisioned a full-scale lifestyle festival where food, music, local businesses, and community came together.
“The Durban Street Food Festival was founded with a simple vision: to create a festival that celebrated Durban's incredible food culture while bringing people from all communities together through food, music and culture,” says Kretsos.
Having spent nearly two decades producing events across KZN and the Western Cape, he knew Durban deserved something that reflected its personality.
Fast-forward to today, and what began as a community event has grown into one of KZN’s biggest lifestyle festivals, attracting thousands of visitors to more than 75 food, craft and lifestyle brands.

Come hungry. Seriously.
One thing you'll quickly discover is that choosing what to eat first may well be the hardest decision of your weekend. The festival has carefully curated vendors serving flavours from every corner of Durban…and plenty from around the globe too.
You can expect:

- Indian street food including pani puri and dosa
- Gourmet smash burgers

- Seafood pasta

Durban’s rise as a foodie destination
Durban has always been famous for its curries, spices and bunny chow, but the city's culinary scene has exploded over the past decade. According to Kretsos, Durban is one of the top destinations for food.
"We're seeing chefs, entrepreneurs and food creators becoming more adventurous, innovative and willing to showcase flavours from around the world alongside authentic local cuisine,” he says. “The festival gives businesses a platform to reach thousands of consumers while encouraging people to discover new flavours and support local entrepreneurs."
Kretsos explains what sets Durban apart from every other food city: “Few cities can offer such an authentic blend of African, Indian, Mediterranean, Asian, Middle Eastern and European influences all within one destination. That diversity is reflected in the city's food, music and people.”
He also believes Durban's lifestyle naturally lends itself to outdoor festivals: “People enjoy gathering with family and friends, sharing meals, listening to live music and spending time together outdoors. The Durban Street Food Festival captures that spirit and has become a celebration of everything that makes the city special.”

It's not just about the food
Although the food may be the headline act, the entertainment line-up is equally impressive. This year's festival features performances by Mafikizolo and Muzi, alongside a packed programme of local musicians, DJs and entertainers throughout the weekend.
Sports fans haven't been forgotten either. The DSFF Bokke Bokke Fan Park will screen the Springbok rugby match on the big screen, meaning visitors won't have to choose between supporting the Boks and sampling another helping of dessert.
Expect family entertainment, interactive brand activations, shopping and a buzzing atmosphere that makes it easy to spend the entire day wandering from stall to stall.
