It’s time to step out, as the KZN Street Dance Festival comes to Durban. All the action will take place at Durban’s Maritime Museum, not far from the BAT Centre, on Saturday, 14 November, from 10am to 4pm.

You can expect to see 12 dance groups from townships across KwaZulu-Natal coming together for a day of performances and celebration.

It’s a lively programme exploring different street dance styles, with a mini carnival showcasing the costumes, music, dance moves and cultures that make up the local street dance scene.

Taking dance beyond the stage

The festival is part of a wider movement to make the arts more accessible by taking performances out of traditional theatres and into public spaces.

Street performers, public art installations, and unexpected pop-up performances are some of the creative ways you’ll get to experience the arts in your everyday surroundings.

The event follows the inaugural Theatre by the Sea, a free festival that brought together 10 community groups for a day of performances honouring the sea in the same open space. This time, the focus is on street dance – a style that has gained a growing global following, reflected in the popularity of dance-focused films and productions.

Presented by Lucky Cele in partnership with Ulozolo Youth Organisation, the festival is funded by the National Arts Council. Cele explains, “The festival is not only about movement, but about using dance to tell stories and empower our people through dance movements. Dance continues to find its place in our arts ecosystem, and meaningfully contribute to the creative economy.”
