Big-screen soundtracks, epic competitions, great theatre, Women’s Month celebrations, and an unmatched rugby rivalry are happening in and around Durban this weekend.

If you’re looking for an excuse to get out of the house, Durban has you covered!
The weather appears to be somewhat better than last week, which is already a positive start. That means there’s a reason to get outdoors, whether it’s watching the Sharks v Lions in Pietermaritzburg, or running in the gorge.
You can also get cultural with some theatre in Durban, or some top-notch orchestral music featuring soundtracks from your favourite films.
Here’s our pick of what’s happening from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 August.
Swap your usual Friday night plans for a little disco, dinner and horse racing under the lights. Lucky Fish Friday Night Racing returns to Hollywoodbets Greyville with a Friday Night Fever theme, bringing live racing together with disco vibes, street food and drinks specials.
Come hungry, because the food line-up includes tacos, pizza, Korean corn dogs, wings, loaded fries, Asian street food and desserts. If you're after something more substantial, the Durban View Room is serving a buffet with dishes including roast leg of lamb, lamb curry, hake, roast sirloin and vegetable biryani.
For some glamour, Durban View Room dinner guests can also enjoy complimentary personalised makeup sessions with professional makeup artist Resh Naidoo.
For the film buffs, this will be an entertaining night out.
The finale of Blockbuster Boys brings the music of some of cinema’s biggest films to the stage, with Durban High School teaming up with Glenwood High School and neighbouring girls’ schools to showcase young local talent.
It’s a soulful celebration of sisters! The festival line-up spans soul, R&B, traditional music, African jazz, a cappella and African blues, with female artists from around the country coming together for a day of music and culture.
Camping chairs are welcome, and cooler boxes are allowed too – although you’ll have to leave the snacks at home.
Got a budding Usain Bolt at home? The KZNA Sub Primary Youth League is giving young athletes aged 7 to 13 the chance to hit the track. The event includes U7, U9, U11 and U13 categories, with athletes able to enter up to three events.

Get ready for a little Hakuna Matata energy!
My African Dream brings the story of Simba’s journey from cub to king to the stage through a colourful combination of tap, ballet, lyrical, jazz, African contemporary, and hip hop.
Expect vibrant costumes, familiar music, and plenty of drama!
As part of Women’s Month celebrations, eThekwini Sport Development and Recreation is hosting a free 5km Women in Sports Colour Run on Durban’s beachfront. Expect colour and plenty of opportunity to get together with friends while celebrating women and prioritising health and wellbeing.
You don’t have to be a seasoned runner, either. Whether you’d rather jog, walk or simply enjoy a morning out by the sea, the 5km route is an easy way to get moving.
Presented by Durban City Orchestra and sponsored by Mzansi Philharmonic…film fans, this one’s for you! The Durban City Orchestra returns with From Screen to Stage II, bringing iconic music from Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, How to Train Your Dragon, The Phantom of the Opera, Superman, Hook, Forrest Gump and Disney to life.
With around 35 active members, the orchestra is one of South Africa's longest-running ensembles. Under resident conductor Charl van der Merwe and concert master Jitske Brien, the concert promises plenty of nostalgia. This is also a chance to discover just how much of your favourite films you remember through their soundtracks alone.
Looking for something a little more intimate? Joshua na die Reën & Band are bringing a Barnyard-style concert to Ballito Gesinskerk.
Bring your own picnic basket and drinks, settle in and enjoy an evening of live music in a relaxed setting.
If your make-up bag has been looking a little beige, it might be time for a colour intervention.
Kryolan Professional Make-up is bringing its Colour Confidence Make-up Masterclass to The Pavilion, where professional artists will show Durbanites how to make bold spring shades feel wearable, fun and, most importantly, achievable.
Expect practical tips on colourful eye and lip looks, colour placement, application techniques and product recommendations. Basically, everything you need to stop playing it safe with your make-up.
Think you’ve got the grit? The Gorge Run is back, and the three routes are ready to put your legs – and your sense of adventure – to work.
Choose your challenge: the 5km is an easy introduction for trail-running newbies, the 10km brings beautiful views with a few more challenges, while the 21km is firmly aimed at hardcore trail runners ready to conquer the gorge.
The event also supports Krantzkloof Honorary Officers and Forest View Primary School, so your muddy shoes are going towards a good cause.
