Umhlanga is one of the country’s sought-after destinations for business and leisure travellers. And anyone who has ever visited Umhlanga knows that leaving is the worst part of the trip.

Now, staying for a week, a month, or even longer is about to become a whole lot easier.

The Radisson Serviced Apartments Umhlanga have officially been announced, marking Radisson Hotel Group's first internationally branded serviced apartment development in South Africa.

Launching to investors on 15 August 2026 and opening its doors in 2029, the development will bring 183 extended-stay apartments to the heart of Umhlanga Ridge.

Unlike a traditional hotel, serviced apartments give you the best of both worlds: the comfort and space of apartment living with the convenience of a premium hotel.

A new way to stay in Umhlanga

Unlike a traditional hotel, serviced apartments give you the best of both worlds: the comfort of apartment living with the convenience of a premium hotel.

This includes:

  • Concierge services
  • Housekeeping
  • Restaurants
  • Meeting facilities
  • A rooftop bar
  • Radisson's internationally recognised service standards

…all while having your own place to call home during your stay.

Located just five minutes from the beach and within walking distance of Gateway Theatre of Shopping, visitors are positioned right in the centre of one of Durban's busiest lifestyle and business precincts.

Why serviced apartments are booming

The rise of serviced apartments isn't unique to Durban. Around the world, they're one of hospitality's fastest-growing accommodation options. As more people work remotely, travel for extended business projects, or combine work with holidays, they want accommodation that’s more than simply a hotel room.

Daniel Trappler, Senior Director of Development for Sub-Saharan Africa at Radisson Hotel Group, says:

"Serviced apartments are no longer a niche accommodation product; they have become an essential component of a modern hospitality portfolio. Today's travellers want the space, flexibility and comfort of a home combined with the consistency, security and service standards of an internationally recognised hotel brand."

He believes KZN is perfectly positioned to benefit from this growing global trend.

A vote of confidence in Umhlanga

For local developer Avoca, choosing Umhlanga was an easy decision.

The area has grown into one of South Africa's leading mixed-use precincts, combining premium offices, residential developments, healthcare facilities, shopping, restaurants and entertainment, all within easy reach of King Shaka International Airport.

According to Avoca Developments director Chris Horn: "This is the epitome of a lifestyle investment where your apartment is taken care of by the Radisson Hotel Group while owners also enjoy the benefit of using a similar unit for up to 30 days each year."

The first release will include 40 apartments, with prices starting from R1.75 million for studio units.

For travellers, it means more choice. For Durban, it means another reason to welcome visitors… and encourage them to stay a little longer.
