If you’re in and around Durban today, take care as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms covering large parts of the city today.
The warning remains in effect until tonight, with the municipality’s Disaster Management and Fire and Emergency Services teams on high alert.
The storms could bring heavy rain and flooding to settlements, roads and bridges, while fast-flowing water may put lives at risk.
The municipality has also warned of possible damage to property and infrastructure, fallen trees blocking roads and hazardous driving conditions.
What should you do?
- Stay indoors and avoid travelling where possible.
- Do not attempt to cross rivers or streams if the water is above ankle height.
- If trapped by floodwater in a vehicle, leave it and move to higher ground.
- In rural areas, move livestock to higher ground.
- Motorists who need to travel are advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and never drive through flooded roads or across low-lying bridges.
