If you've been around Glenwood, Florida Road, Durban North, or Westville recently, you've probably spotted queues of people looking to get their Yogiberry fix.

We chatted to the team behind Durban's latest frozen yoghurt craze to get the inside scoop on this dessert trend.

The variety of flavours and toppings mean no two are the same.

So, why is everyone talking about Yogiberry?

Yogiberry arrived in Durban with a feast of flavours and toppings, letting you make your own rules! The self-serve format means no two cups need to look quite the same.

Pick your frozen yoghurt flavour, grab a cup, swirl away and then pile on the toppings. Want something fruity and fresh? Easy. Want to create an extravagant tower of chocolate, Biscoff and brownie? Nobody is judging.

And yes, it is very much designed for the camera phone generation.

“Yogiberry is a premium frozen yoghurt experience built around choice, creativity, and personal expression,” says Bradley Marshall, Marketing Executive.

“Customers can craft their own cup with premium frozen yoghurt flavours, fresh toppings, sauces and crunchy add-ons. Every visit can feel different because the customer is in control — their flavour, their toppings, their way.”

It started with one Durban store

Yogiberry only launched in May 2026, initially appearing inside the Pedros concept store on Florida Road.

According to Bernard Muneri, Operations Executive, it was the MD, Moosa Bux, who spotted a gap for a fresh, premium frozen yoghurt concept that could bring something different to the Pedros environment.

The gamble appears to have paid off.

“What began as a new concept quickly became much bigger than expected, with customers queuing from open to close and sharing their Yogiberry moments online,” says Muneri.

Marshall adds, “At Florida Road, we saw queues building almost immediately, sometimes stretching out the door and onto the sidewalk. Customers were coming in for the swirl, creating their own combinations, posting about it online and bringing their friends back with them.”

The brand subsequently expanded within selected Pedros stores, including Glenwood, before branching out into standalone locations. Westville Mall opened in September, followed by the Durban North store, with a Pavilion store opening before the end of the month.

The brand recently launched in the Western Cape too, with its first Cape Town store at BP TOKAI.

So, if it feels like Yogiberry suddenly appeared everywhere, you’re not imagining things.

What makes it different?

The obvious answer is the wide range of toppings and premium frozen yoghurt.

The more interesting answer is the experience.

Yogiberry’s model puts the customer in charge, with a rotating selection of frozen yoghurt flavours, sauces and toppings that can be mixed and matched into an entirely personalised creation.

“One of the most exciting parts of Yogiberry is our rotating flavour programme. Every two weeks, we introduce new limited-time flavours, which gives customers a reason to keep coming back and try something different,” says Muneri. "We also have a fantastic app for loyal customers offering rewards on the number of visits."

Marshall adds that it’s not just about the dessert: “It’s about creating a moment that customers want to enjoy, photograph, share and come back for. Durban has always responded well to fresh, social, and experience-led food concepts, and Yogiberry fits perfectly into that space. Plus, we've now taken Cape Town by storm."

“The brand appeals strongly to a young, trend-conscious audience, especially Gen Z customers who love discovering new places, trying new flavours and sharing their experiences online.”

Basically, it’s dessert with a side order of content creation.

What are people choosing?

The standard frozen yoghurt flavours include Signature Tart, Mixed Berry, Strawberry and Passion Fruit. Some of the decadent flavours that have already made an impression include Nutella, Belgian Chocolate, Cherry, and English Toffee.

Then there are the toppings.

The current favourites include White Chocolate Crunch, Nutella Crunch, Lotus Biscoff, Oreo Crumble, Choc Chip Cookie, Dubai Filling, Speckled Eggs, Fudge Crumble, Astros, Chocolate Brownie, and Belgian Dark Chocolate.

So yes, there is a very real possibility that your ‘quick frozen yoghurt’ turns into a cup containing half the dessert aisle.

Why has Durban gone for it?

For Marshall, the combination of customisation, affordability, and novelty is a big part of the appeal.

“It also works because it is fun and highly customisable. Customers are not just buying a dessert — they are creating something personal,” he says.

“The timing feels right because people are looking for treats that feel fresh, light, social and worth the visit. Yogiberry delivers all of that in one cup.”

There’s also the simple fact that Durban loves a new food trend – particularly one that can be enjoyed in the sunshine and photographed before it melts.

Take a twirl with the next swirl

Yogiberry’s expansion across Durban looks unlikely to stop here.

The team is already looking at new locations around South Africa, while the rotating flavour programme gives existing customers a reason to return and see what’s new.

For now, the formula seems simple enough: grab a cup, choose your swirl, pile on the toppings, and try not to eat it before you’ve taken a photo!

And if the queues are anything to go by, Durban has already decided that this is going to be a frozen yoghurt summer.
