One of South Africa's best-known wildlife destinations, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve is particularly famous for its white rhino conservation history, but there’s so much more to see.

The reserve offers the chance to encounter the Big Five alongside a wide variety of other wildlife and birdlife. The northern Hluhluwe section is characterised by hills and denser vegetation, while the southern iMfolozi section has more open thornveld and savanna.

Visitors can explore the reserve on self-drive routes or book guided open-vehicle game drives, which offer a different perspective on the landscape and wildlife.

There are accommodation options within the reserve, including Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe section and camps and lodges in the iMfolozi section.

Enseleni Nature Reserve is a 293-hectare protected area offering a quieter nature experience away from the bigger safari destinations.

The reserve is known for its birdlife, including the rare African finch, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing and walking.

There are hiking routes, including the Nkonkoni and Mvubu trails, along with picnic facilities for visitors wanting to spend a few hours outdoors.

For a combination of wildlife and adventure, Lake Eland Game Reserve offers plenty to do.

The 2,500-hectare reserve encompasses bushveld, grassland, coastal forest and wetlands, with wildlife and flora to discover along its self-drive routes.

It’s also home to a range of outdoor activities, including an 80m suspension bridge, zipline tours, horse riding, hiking, single-track mountain biking, paintball, fishing and 4x4 tracks.

Families can make use of the picnic facilities and children's playground, while the on-site restaurant provides an option for a meal after a morning outdoors.

Good to know: The reserve welcomes day visitors as well as overnight guests. Activity times and availability can vary, so check ahead before making the trip.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park is one of KZN's most remarkable natural destinations.

Its enormous protected landscape incorporates wetlands, lakes, grasslands, coastal forest, beaches and marine environments. You can choose between very different experiences depending on which part of the park you explore.

Wildlife experiences include game drives, boat cruises and opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles and a variety of antelope. The park is also a major birding destination, with more than 500 bird species recorded.

On the coast, visitors can explore beaches, go kayaking or fishing, take boat trips and, seasonally, look out for nesting turtles and migrating whales.

If your idea of a nature escape involves mountains rather than safari vehicles, head towards the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this protected mountain landscape offers opportunities for hiking and Berg trekking, rock climbing, angling, birdwatching and game viewing. You can also explore caves and areas associated with the region's cultural and natural heritage.

There are a variety of nature reserves that fall within the park. Accommodation options include camping, wild camping, caves, chalets and hiking huts, making it possible to plan anything from a short day visit to a multi-day mountain adventure.

Spread across 2,189 hectares, Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve combines grassland, indigenous forest and river valleys with expansive views towards the coast.

It’s particularly interesting for birdwatchers, with more than 300 bird species recorded, including forest and grassland species as well as raptors. The reserve is also home to a range of wildlife including eland, zebra, blue wildebeest, blesbok, oribi, nyala, impala and bushbuck.

Hikers can choose from shorter walks to longer trails, including a route leading towards the site of the old Happy Thoughts Gold Mine.

Mountain bikers can explore routes including the Kwamzukwa Gate Ride and the Viewpoints and 4x4 Track, while day visitors can make use of picnic and braai facilities.

For a safari experience closer to Durban, Tala Private Game Reserve is an accessible option for a day out or overnight stay.

The approximately 3,600-hectare reserve encompasses acacia thornveld, grassland and wetland, supporting wildlife including rhino, giraffe, kudu, hippo, zebra and blue wildebeest.

It’s also a notable birding destination, with more than 380 species recorded.

Tala combines traditional game viewing with a selection of more active experiences, including mountain biking, horseback riding, paintball, archery and Segway tours. Picnic spots, restaurants and other leisure facilities make it suitable for visitors who want to mix wildlife with a relaxed day outdoors.

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is tucked into the Kloof landscape and offers a network of trails, viewpoints, waterfalls, indigenous forest and dramatic gorge scenery.

It’s a popular option for walkers, hikers and anyone looking for a dose of nature without making a full-day road trip out of the city.

The reserve is open throughout the year, although access to certain trails can be restricted after rain for visitor safety and to protect the paths.

Good to know: Entry is through the Kloof Falls Road entrance. Visitor numbers and parking are limited, and entry is subject to available space. Check current fees and trail conditions before visiting, particularly after wet weather.

For something completely different – and right in the heart of Durban - head to Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve at the mouth of the uMngeni River.

This protected estuarine environment is home to three protected mangrove species and a variety of creatures that thrive around the mudflats and mangrove roots, including mudskippers and fiddler crabs.

The reserve also provides an important habitat for birdlife and plays a valuable role in the coastal ecosystem. This is a great chance to learn more about mangrove ecosystems while exploring one of Durban's less expected natural spaces.

Virginia Bush Nature Reserve sits in the leafy Durban North area and provides walking trails through indigenous coastal vegetation.

The reserve is suited to walkers, birdwatchers and anyone looking for a quieter outdoor experience close to the city. Its shaded trails and natural surroundings make it a useful option when you want to get outside without committing to a full day's drive.

Good to know: Check current access arrangements and trail conditions before visiting. Parking is available at the nearby Virginia Sports Field.
