Welcome to Time Out
The best of Exeter
This city in the UK has come a long way since being voted Clone Town of the Year in 2014: the best things to do in Exeter are now so incredibly fun, people flock here year in and year out. Nowadays the city is well on the way to becoming a kind of miniature Bristol, with a gorgeously restored historic quayside, cider a-plenty and a clutch of cool cafés that make the most of all that West Country produce on the doorstep. Here’s where to eat, drink, shop and look around while you’re there. In town for a single day? Check out our guide to the perfect day in Exeter. Done something on this list and loved it? Exeter is small, but it’s kinda mighty. It sits on the River Exe, near the sleepy Devon countryside and pretty coastline – and it’s been there since before the Roman era. A city of juxtapositions, it’s home to both ancient and uber-modern architecture, lively students and established locals, contemporary bars and olde-worlde pubs. But it’s a bit like sweet and sour sauce in that way. It shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does.
