Those boisterous Italian plumbers return in a sequel to 2023’s smash-hit animation that also made a motza but mislays some of the hectic charm of the first film. This time, Mario and Luigi – voiced again by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day – are up against the ankle-biting menace of Bowser Jr after his evil dad gets downsized. This one replicates the intergalactic adventures of the Super Mario Galaxy platform game (ie it slightly rips off Star Wars) as the drain-clearing duo team up with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and cute dino Yoshi (Donald Glover). Zippy and colourful, it’ll keep the younger kids transfixed without giving the oldies a headache.
It’s been a headline-grabbing year for family movies, with a massive new Toy Story film, another new Pixar movie, an adorable Aardman adventure, a Super Mario sequel, a big rights kerfuffle over Coyote Vs. Acme, a disastrous live-action Moana, and something called Chickenhare And The Secret Of The Groundhog (although no shade if you missed that one). And there’s still a new Laika animated epic, Wildwood, and Disney’s Hexed to come.
Picking a family film for movie night is not an easy task and 2026 has already contributed handsomely to the canon, for which it has the gratitude of an army of weary parents. But not all demographic-spanning sofa fodder is created equal. Allow us to curate the best options from the year for you to tee up on movie night safe in the knowledge that no toys will be thrown. Apart from maybe Buzz Lightyear.
