Time Out says

First, a quick pedantic correction: Michelin doesn't actually give ‘stars’ to hotels. They give Keys. It’s the same vibe – a gold-standard seal of excellence – but for beds instead of bread. The Michelin Guide dropped its first-ever Keys in 2024, and while heavy hitters like Helsinki’s grand dame Hotel Kämp or the flashy new Waldorf Astoria Helsinki were in the conversation, RUNO secured its status as a must-visit destination by late 2025. So, why did this boutique spot in a small riverside town rise above the rest of Finland’s luxury crop?

The ‘Four S’ test

RUNO isn’t your typical corporate-chic chain. It is the singular vision of founder Erkka Hirvonen, a man whose dedication to the ‘concept’ borders on the fanatical. Before opening in 2021, Hirvonen spent six months living in the then-empty 1912 Art Nouveau building on a foldable camp bed, ‘breathing in’ the space to understand its soul.

The result is a hotel built on the ‘Four S’ test: Sight, Sound, Smell, and Surface.

Everything you encounter must serve all four. Hirvonen quickly realised that only natural materials could pass the test. Consequently, the hotel is a temple to timber, stone, and linen. But it’s the level of detail that feels truly ‘unhinged’ in the best possible way.

Picky, Picky, Picky

When Hirvonen talks about his sourcing process, it sounds like a marathon of endurance. To find the right chairs for the guest rooms, he personally tested 60 different models across the Nordics. He eventually landed on the Carl Hansen & Søn EO15 – a chair that retails for nearly £5,000 a pop.

The walls? Hand-painted with organic linseed oil paint. The brushes used to apply said paint? Chosen from a shortlist of twenty. The result is a finish that subtly shifts and ‘lives’ depending on how the Finnish light hits it.

Even the breakfast buffet was a battlefield. To find the perfect Karelian pasty (a traditional Finnish rye crust filled with rice porridge), Hirvonen sampled bakes from almost every bakery in the country before choosing a small family outfit from Liperi.

Quiet Luxury

It sounds ‘over the top’ on paper, but in person, it just... works. RUNO is a masterclass in Nordic Minimalism. This isn't the loud, gold-leaf luxury of Dubai; it’s a hushed, tactile elegance. The towel racks in the bathrooms are made from salvaged hay poles found in old barns. It’s high-end, but it’s rooted in Finnish history and storytelling.

The Verdict

You could easily lose a weekend inside RUNO’s walls. While the hotel doesn't serve a full dinner (giving you a great excuse to wander into Porvoo’s postcard-perfect Old Town), it handles everything else with aplomb.

The breakfast is a curated hit-list of Finnish artisans, the sauna is a masterclass in steam, and the lobby – stocked with a museum-grade collection of design books – is the city's coolest living room. Plus, the cocktail bar is arguably the only place in town for a serious drink.

In a country where ‘cutting costs’ is often the default, RUNO is a refreshing, obsessive anomaly. It’s a hotel where everything has been done ‘down to a T’, and frankly, we’re here for it.

Where is it? Porvoo is about a 50-minute drive (or a scenic bus ride) east of Helsinki. It’s famous for its red riverside ochre warehouses and cobblestone streets.

The Vibe: Sophisticated, soulful, and very, very comfortable.

The Highlight: The ‘Four S’ experience. Your hands and nose will thank you.

The Price: Very reasonably, given that you’ll find up to two £5,000 armchairs in your room. The beds are by the iconic Swedish luxury brand DUX. Double room from €225 per night.
