Travellers exploring Helsinki’s harbourfront – along with locals in southern Helsinki – will finally have an easy way to enjoy Way Café’s much-loved treats. The popular bakery–café from the Kallio district opens a new location on Monday 24 November 2025 in the historic Old Market Hall, right next to the central Market Square.
The opening is significant: Way will be the first new business to move into the Old Market Hall in more than a decade. Standing at the edge of the harbour for almost 140 years, the hall is one of Helsinki’s oldest and most atmospheric food markets, and a favourite stop for visitors exploring the waterfront.
When a space became available, Helsinki City Premises – who operate the market hall – approached Way founders Lauri Kähkönen and Toni Feri. They accepted immediately.
It’s a natural fit. When Way Bakery first opened in 2018 in Kallio, a lively neighbourhood just north of the centre, it became an instant sensation. Locals queued for its sourdough breads and pastries, and the café quickly gained a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting new openings. In summer 2026, Way expanded eastward, opening Way Herttoniemi beside the old Herttoniemi shopping centre, an outpost Time Out has included among the best cafés in Helsinki.
The new Way Café in the Old Market Hall will have seating for sixteen guests and will serve favourites such as salmon sandwiches, cinnamon buns and a rotating selection of seasonal specials. The interior has been designed by Joanna Laajisto, one of Finland’s best-known interior architects, known for her clean, warm, Nordic aesthetic.
Way’s cinnamon buns, in particular, have received high praise from Time Out; the version served in Herttoniemi ranks among the best we’ve tasted in the city.
Way Old Market Hall will be open Monday to Saturday.
