Time Out says

Some restaurants live or die by their food. Rogue Rouge has a head start: one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Helsinki. The restaurant occupies a historic timber warehouse on the tiny island of Tervasaari, just a 15-minute stroll from Senate Square, yet it somehow feels miles away from the city centre.

The island’s name translates as Tar Island, and the warehouse dates back to 1805, when Helsinki’s fortunes were tied to ships, timber and one extremely flammable export product. Today, one of the city’s oldest surviving wooden buildings has been given a stylish new life. Original timber beams meet soaring glass walls, flooding the dining room with natural light and leafy sea views. On a summer evening, it’s the sort of setting that immediately makes you want to order a cocktail and cancel any plans you had afterwards.

On a summer evening, sunlight practically caresses the pavilion-like dining room. Outside, there’s plenty of space on the terrace, while inside the atmosphere is relaxed and the service warm without being overfamiliar.

The drinks set the tone. The cocktail list is short but focused, favouring quality over quantity. The signature Rogue Sour (€15) is a fine example: cherries bring a bright summer fruitiness while egg white adds a silky texture.

The same restraint carries over to the food menu. You can count the snacks, starters and mains each on one hand, which feels entirely sensible. Better to do a few things well than many things indifferently. The menu is designed to evolve, with popular dishes sticking around while less successful ones will get replaced. It’s a smart approach: short enough to stay fresh, but stable enough for regulars to return to their favourites.

The cooking occupies that sweet spot between comfort food and fine dining. Let’s call it premium comfort food. There’s no unnecessary fussiness, but each dish has a little twist of its own. The burger (€22), enriched with bone marrow, was enthusiastically recommended by our server and deservedly so. It immediately enters the conversation for one of the best burgers in Helsinki.

Meat lovers can also choose from steaks (€38) and salsiccia sausage (€22). Seafood options include vongole pasta (€24), pan-fried sea bass (€29) and a fish and shellfish soup (€28), while vegetarians get a tomato risotto (€23).

Prices aren’t cheap, but neither are they unreasonable. Starters hover around €15, and both the Skagen toast and king prawns in herb salsa were excellent.

This is the first restaurant from founders Joona Havisalmi and Kimmo Kuusrainen, but the team arrives with plenty of experience from some of Helsinki’s most respected dining rooms.

In truth, the food is almost difficult to judge entirely objectively after a single visit because the setting is so appealing. On a warm summer evening, the atmosphere is close to perfect. You get the feeling that even a plate of sausage and chips might somehow taste gourmet here.

It’s easy to imagine Rogue Rouge becoming one of the season’s breakout hits in Helsinki. We visited just a week after opening and, despite the tongue-twisting name, the restaurant was already filling up nicely as the evening progressed.

Vibe: A wonderfully atmospheric blend of old and new. Intimate enough for a date, spacious enough for larger groups.

Drink: Excellent cocktails and thoughtful wine recommendations. The sommelier was lured over from Michelin-starred Finnjävel.

Food: Hits a pleasing middle ground. Straightforward enough for anyone tired of fine-dining theatrics, but nuanced enough to rise comfortably above standard comfort food.

Time Out tip: Arrive early and take a lap around Tervasaari before dinner. The tiny island feels surprisingly removed from the city, despite being just minutes from Senate Square. Better still, Rogue Rouge isn’t just a summer restaurant. The island is equally lovely in autumn, when the trees turn shades of gold and red and the waterfront paths become one of the prettiest spots in central Helsinki for a pre-dinner stroll.
