Modern art includes artistic works produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. More recent artistic production is often called Contemporary art or Postmodern art.

Among the many artists available at this welcoming yet exclusive gallery and design studio is the incomparable Texas born Dorothy Hood, an American painter in the Modernist tradition. Her work is held in private collections and at several museums, most notably the Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her preferred mediums were oil paint and ink. Hood was considered a "pioneer modernist.” Her work was a historical link between Mexican synthetic surrealism and the American Color Field School. Hood was one of the first abstract surrealists, her paintings, which often refer to natural events, are noted by their large color areas. Her art also references her Texan roots with expansive imagery and sweeps of color indicative of the southwest. Hood’s well-known “Crossing The Great Divide” is but one of the pieces available in the gallery.

The Gallery features leaders in the Texas art movement, such as, Robert Preusser an Abstract Expressionist painter, who said that his "constant aim in painting is that of making evident an emotional expression and bringing it into a revealed tangible form through a combined intellectual and intuitive approach" with available original works dating back to 1936.

With modern and postmodern artists’ including notables such as Wray, Stout and Briggs, SWANK has set the pace for artists to be exposed to collectors serious about their art and excited to experience something new including Contemporary artist William Loyd who hand mixes each ingredient with organic elements like crushed pearl, gold, silver, copper and diamond dust to create one of a kind art and furniture that has led Loyd to be a favorite among celebrities.

SWANK is excited to be the new home for Texas’ most important established and emerging artists allowing new and experienced collectors alike to participate in the movement that is Texas art.
