Silent Era giant Charlie Chaplin’s first-ever pure talkie — and a controversial masterpiece. In it, Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin brings his sublime physicality to both roles: the cruel yet clownish "Tomainian" dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Nearly 80 years later, THE GREAT DICTATOR remains surprisingly relevant with the power to provoke, inspire, entertain and perhaps even topple totalitarian regimes.

"It is a funny film, which we expect from Chaplin, and a brave one."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"Chaplin is at his most profound in suggesting that there is much of the Tramp in the Dictator, and much of the Dictator in the Tramp."
David Kehr, Chicago Reader
