More about Mildred’s Umbrella:
Mildred’s Umbrella began in 2001 as a one-time collaboration of Houston-based artists dedicated to edgy, new theatrical works. The company has since grown into a fixture of the Houston arts landscape known for pushing the envelope of theatre, using it to explore the world, and presenting audiences with thought-provoking art. Now in its thirteenth full season, the company has produced a variety of pieces including mainstage full-length plays, theatrical works in conjunction with lectures at the University of Houston, Fringe Festival pieces, and a popular festival showcase of short originals (“Museum of Dysfunction”), currently in its ninth iteration. The theater’s mission is to challenge audiences and theatre artists by creating and performing bold, innovative, and fresh theatrical works grounded in the best traditions of the dramatic arts while featuring the work of female playwrights, actors, and directors, which promotes the empowerment of women through the performing arts.

Over the last three years, Mildred’s Umbrella has made dramatic strides to increase its impact on the Houston cultural landscape. In 2012, the company gained a permanent home by leasing Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, a 100-seat black box theatre in the growing Washington Avenue Arts District. Shortly after, the company entered the Houston Arts Alliance Resident Incubator program, a three-year intensive program geared toward helping small arts groups build organizational capacity, and joined Theatre Communications Group, the national trade association for American theatre, moves which helped the company grow its network and enhance internal operations. Highlighting a long-held focus on works by women, Mildred’s Umbrella pledged support for the “50/50 by 2020” campaign of the League of Professional Theatre Women in 2014, and remains committed to promoting gender parity in the theatrical arts; female playwrights wrote 75% of Mildred’s 2016-17 season.

About Studio 101:
Studio 101, located in Spring Street Studios, is a 100-seat black box theater complete with a technical booth, lighting grid, and flexible riser seating. The theater has an adjoining dressing room which can easily accommodate a cast of 30 as well as a stock of flats, costumes, props, and front of house supplies. The theater and adjoining dressing room are currently shared by Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company and 4th Wall Theatre Company, who trade off use of the space throughout the year.
