This conference will introduce attendees to the principles and practices associated with restorative justice. We will discuss how the philosophy can disrupt the disproportionate suspension, expulsion, and criminalization of young people of color. Too often, students who are diverted into alternative disciplinary programs drop out of school and end up in the criminal justice system. Yet available data does not reveal just how many of our young people are falling through the cracks. For this reason we are devoting the conference to young people in the shadows - those who have been overlooked or excluded from the education system.

Participants will also take part in a brief restorative justice circle training and hear from students, parents, and restorative justice advocates in the education and juvenile justice fields. Practitioners from all across the state will share best practices and the challenges associated with implementing restorative justice in communities. Our keynote speaker, Linda White, will share her experience participating in a restorative dialogue with the man who murdered her daughter, and reveal the potential for using restorative justice in the criminal justice system.
