Time Out says

Sapporo isn’t short on efficient hotels, but generous ones? That’s rarer territory. The Grand Mercure Sapporo Odori Park immediately stands out by doing something quietly radical for this city: it gives you space. Real, old-school, slightly indulgent space – from the sweeping driveway to the marble-heavy lobby – and then backs it up with genuine Japanese hospitality.

Why stay at Grand Mercure Sapporo Odori Park?

In a city where many hotels feel tightly packed and utilitarian, the Grand Mercure leans confidently in the opposite direction. The lobby is vast and glossy, finished in marble floors and framed by a proper driveway, a detail that feels almost nostalgic in Sapporo's urban hotel scene. Even the lifts make an impression. They’re fast, glass-lined and open out to views across the city and Mount Moiwa as you rise to the upper floors.

What are the rooms like at Grand Mercure Sapporo Odori Park?

The biggest surprise is just how roomy the guestrooms are. I stayed in a twin room, and it felt positively generous by Sapporo standards. There’s an exposed wardrobe area that comfortably fits a large suitcase, plus an additional dining or sitting space if you need to do some remote work.

The design is thoughtful and intuitive. Everything is exactly where you want it to be: dustbins and hooks positioned logically, a hairdryer placed right next to a usable power point, and small recessed bedside nooks instead of bulky tables with just enough space for a phone, glasses and whatever you’re reading before sleep. The TV connects straight to Netflix, no fiddling required.

The bathroom follows classic Japanese logic, with a combined bath-and-shower setup that’s spotless and practical. One small quirk remains very Japanese: the twin beds are pushed close together and tight against the wall, with minimal space between them, a layout choice that puzzles, given there’s clearly room to spread things out. Still, it’s a minor gripe in an otherwise impressively comfortable room.

What’s the restaurant like?

Breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant and lounge area, and it’s lively and maybe a little chaotic. The space fills quickly, and the crowd is unmistakably international, with tour groups and families moving through in waves.

That said, the food more than holds its own. There’s a solid spread of Japanese breakfast staples alongside Western options, but the real highlight is the focus on local Hokkaido specialities. Soup curry – the region’s signature dish – makes an appearance, and it’s well worth starting your day with a bowl. There's also fresh cuts of sashimi, not something you usually see in a hotel breakfast spread.

What is the service like?

Staff are consistently friendly and attentive, as you'd expect from Japan. The personal touch from senior management sets the tone, when the GM personally came to greet me upon my arrival and helped me with my bags. That warmth carries through across the hotel, from check-in to housekeeping to the restaurant team.

What’s the area like around Grand Mercure Sapporo Odori Park?

Location-wise, the hotel hits a sweet spot. It sits near Odori Park, giving you easy access to one of the city’s main green corridors while keeping things relatively calm at night.

You’re about a five-minute walk from Nishi-Juitchome Station on the Tozai Line. From there, it’s one stop to Odori and a straightforward ride to Susukino, Sapporo’s neon-lit dining and nightlife hub. Heading in the other direction, the line connects you to Shin-Sapporo, where you can hop on the Airport Express for an easy trip to New Chitose Airport.

It’s a location that works just as well for sightseeing as it does for business or a short city break.

Why should you book a stay at Grand Mercure Sapporo Odori Park?

If you’re looking for a hotel in Sapporo that feels spacious and calm, this is an excellent choice. The rooms are larger than most and the location makes navigating the city simple.
