This hotel experience will forever be embedded in my mind as the standard for luxurious hotels. From the moment I walked into the D’oreale Grande, just by entering through the doors, I immediately felt like I had stepped into a super luxurious, expensive space. The hotel doesn’t hold back; it screams posh, high-end amenities, and it reflects a level of detail that you don’t come across every day.
There is something about the way the hotel introduces itself to you. The entrance alone is captivating. You are met with gold décor, high-end mirrors, marble finishes, and an incredible amount of lighting that highlights every corner of the space. The cleanliness is immediately noticeable, and the attention to detail in how everything is placed - from flower pots to art pieces- shows intention. The ceilings, the tiles, the colour coordination, the textures - everything works together to create a feeling of superiority. It feels like you’ve stepped into a hidden gem right in the heart of Johannesburg.
Located within Emperors Palace, the hotel offers both luxury and convenience, making it feel like an escape while still being within reach of everything.
The experience doesn’t just begin at the hotel room door; it starts the moment you arrive. What I loved was that our car felt completely safe, and from the moment we stepped out, the staff were ready to assist us with our bags. That level of attentiveness made everything feel seamless and welcoming.
Walking into reception, we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist, and the warmth in that interaction immediately set a positive tone. There’s something about good service that enhances luxury, and this hotel understands that.
Even the elevator area was an experience in itself. It may sound like a small detail, but it’s not. The elevators were just as luxurious as the rest of the hotel - gold finishes, glossy surfaces, and a polished look that made even that short ride feel special. Everything about the entrance and the journey to the room felt like confirmation that we had made the right decision.
We booked a Classic King Room (Room 3017), which goes for roughly R7,000 a night. Naturally, with that price point, expectations are high. But from the moment we approached the room, I already felt like this stay was going to be worth every cent.
When we entered the room, the first thing I felt was warmth. Not just physical warmth, but a welcoming, comforting atmosphere. The design was elegant and thoughtful. There were paintings in the room, but they weren’t overwhelming; they were arranged to complement the space beautifully.
The walls had a smooth finish, and the colour palette leaned into natural tones, which made the room feel calm and grounded. There were hints of blue that added a subtle richness to the overall design.
The bed immediately stood out. It was a king-size bed with pure white sheets that were silky soft, breathable, and extremely comfortable. The bedding felt fresh and clean, exactly what you want from a luxury hotel. There was also an extra blanket in the closet, which came in handy considering how cold Johannesburg nights can get.
The curtains were heavy and added to the room's warmth, especially during the chilly evening. It created a cosy environment that made it easy to relax and unwind.
The room also included a coffee machine, which was perfect for a cold night. There’s something about making a warm cup of coffee in such a beautiful setting that just elevates the experience. There was a small TV with a variety of entertainment options, more than enough to keep you occupied if you wanted to stay in.
One of my favourite features was the marble table paired with a comfortable chair, which created a perfect little workspace. Whether you’re working or just sitting down to write or reflect, it’s a great addition.
The mirrors in the room, framed in gold, added depth and elegance, making the space feel even more luxurious. The headboard was another standout; it was smooth, comfortable, and perfect to lean against.
Lighting played a huge role in the room’s atmosphere. There were multiple lamps strategically placed around the room, each complementing the design. The golden tones of the lamps matched the large, eye-catching ceiling light fixture, tying everything together beautifully.
There were also elegant wine glasses available, making it easy to unwind and enjoy a quiet moment with your partner.
The bathroom carried the same standard of luxury as the bedroom. It was clean, modern, and visually appealing.
The space was large enough to comfortably accommodate two people, which added a sense of indulgence. The marble finishes, the wallpaper, and the overall design made it feel like a private space.
I also appreciated the small details, like the complimentary oral care items in case you forgot your toothbrush. The body wash and lotion were beautifully packaged, enhancing the space's aesthetic.
Everything about the bathroom felt intentional and aligned with the hotel’s overall theme of elegance and comfort.
Breakfast was served at the hotel's Reign Restaurant. The experience was enjoyable and well-organised. You order from the menu, but it’s included in your stay, which is always a plus.
The setting was lovely, especially with views overlooking the pool area. It created a calm and relaxing atmosphere to start the day. The food itself was delicious and satisfying.
Room service was also available, which adds to the convenience if you prefer to stay in and enjoy your space.
What makes this hotel stand out even more is that it offers more than just accommodation. Being located at Emperor's Palace means you have access to a full entertainment hub.
After checking out, we were able to catch a movie at Nu Metro on the premises, which extended the experience beyond the hotel stay. Besides this hotel stay, we regularly visit the Emperors Palace Nu Metro cinema because of its high-quality technical execution, great sound, and comfortable seats.
There are also regular shows and events at Emperors Palace, giving guests plenty of entertainment options. On the night that we slept at the hotel, we were at the Big Zulu album launch, which took place at the Theatre of Marcellus.
If you’re looking to relax, the hotel offers a spa and a neat, stunning pool area with a garden setting. There is also a 24-hour gym. For business travellers, a business centre is also available. It caters to different needs, whether you’re there to unwind, work, or explore.
Another thing I loved was the variety of restaurants available at Emperor's Palace. If you don’t feel like dining at the hotel restaurant, you have plenty of options, from casual spots like Nando’s and Spur to more elaborate dining experiences and buffet-style restaurants.
There is also a casino within the complex, adding another layer of entertainment for those who enjoy that kind of experience.
The location is one of the hotel’s strongest advantages. It is very close to O.R. Tambo International Airport, which makes it extremely convenient for both local and international travellers.
It’s also easily accessible, whether you’re using public transport or driving. The area is well-maintained, and getting to the hotel is straightforward, reducing any travel-related stress.
For Johannesburg residents, it’s the perfect staycation option - you don’t have to drive far to experience luxury. For tourists, it offers a well-rounded experience in one location.
The D’oreale Grande truly delivers on its promise of luxury. From the entrance to the room, from the service to the facilities, everything is thoughtfully designed to create an unforgettable experience.
It’s more than just a place to sleep; it’s a full experience. You feel removed from the noise and busyness of Johannesburg, yet you’re still right in the middle of one of its most vibrant entertainment hubs.
The hotel has also received recognition from the World Luxury Hotel Awards and other World Travel Awards, which speaks to its quality and reputation.
This is definitely one of the best hotels in Johannesburg. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a solo escape, or just a place to unwind, this hotel is worth every cent.
Every single thing about it was amazing, and it’s an experience I would highly recommend to anyone looking to indulge in luxury without leaving the city.
