Local Hero: Woman changes the lives of orphans through love and education

This Women's Month, the spotlight is on phenomenal females who are changing the world through their remarkable deeds. Anna Mojapelo, the co-founder of the New Jerusalem Children's Home in Midrand, is one of them.  She has devoted her life to giving abandoned children a better future.  Anna's purpose was birthed while working as an advocate and dealing with children's cases. Anna says she was disturbed by how many children from toxic homes got into trouble with the Law. She also witnessed the dire effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that led to many children becoming orphans. Moved by compassion, Anna alongside her late sister, Phina, who was a social worker at the time, decided to open an orphanage.  They made it their mission to give love and hope to abandoned children. " We started with one child and then from there, eight, and then it started growing," Anna says.  Today, the home she started in 2000, has cared for hundreds of children. Not only is she providing shelter, but she has also opened a school on the same premises, and many of the children who grew up in the home have now gotten jobs and are also making a difference in the lives of others.    " Our admission is from zero to twelve, and the children can be here up until they are 18, and sometimes they even stay until they are 21 or 22."   She says what gives her joy is seeing the children succeeding in life.  "I've got one child who is studying Data Science in Russia. Another one is also going to study Bio Technology
Beware of free airport Wi-Fi scams

Beware of free airport Wi-Fi scams

Millions of people fall victim to cyber attacks every year.  Astra Security reports that 'there are 2,200 cyber attacks per day, with a cyber attack happening every 39 seconds on average'. While travelling or using the airport, be mindful of the network that you connect to. One of the methods that scammers use to hack people's gadgets is through unsecured networks. Fraudsters are intelligent and would not use names that would make it obvious that you are connecting to a fake network. For instance, they might set up a network called Free Airport Wi-Fi. Just because the name looks secure doesn't mean the network is safe. Hackers use unsecured networks to gain access to your personal information, which can be used for identity theft, passwords, personal messages, browsing history, and your banking details. They can also easily alter your data and intercept everything you do online.  One of the best ways to protect your device from unsecured networks is to install an application that protects from network attacks such as Kaspersky Standard.  It is also not advisable to log onto your banking app using public networks.  How to spot an unsecure network: Usually, unsafe networks don't require you to enter a password or other authentication, even if you are connecting for the first time. You can simply connect.  Turn on Always Use Secure Connections option on your mobile device to avoid being automatically connected to open networks. You will get a warning before your device connects

Johannesburg City Library fully reopens after five year closure

Great news for Joburg residents: the city library will be fully operational from Monday, August 11. The library took to social media to announce the reopening.  "We look forward to welcoming you to the fully reopened library as of Monday, 11 August 2025," a statement on Johannesburg City Library's Facebook page read.  The library closed in May 2021 because of COVID-19 restrictions and partially reopened this year in March.  It underwent renovations because of water leaks and a non-compliance notice. “Around February 2022, Emergency Management Services issued a non-compliance notice and an order to comply. The building wasn’t fire-compliant; it did not have the necessary systems (fire detection, protection, evacuation and pressurised water system in case of a fire) in line with the City’s by-laws, and the building was non-compliant with national building regulations," Nthatisi Modingoane, City of Johannesburg Deputy Director of Media Relations at City of Johannesburg said.  The renovations are now completed; however, it will be closed on Wednesday, 06 August until Friday, 08 August for the final preparations of the reopening.  "Please be advised that the Johannesburg City Library will be temporarily closed to the public from Wednesday, 06 August, to Friday, 08 August 2025. This closure is essential for the health and safety of our patrons and staff to allow the contractor to safely complete final preparations for the official reopening of the library's remaining sections." South Africa welcomes new passport stamps

South Africa welcomes new passport stamps

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has introduced new entry and exit stamps for port of entry in South Africa, effective this August.  The move comes after several reports of corruption and many fraudulent activities and passport fraud. One of the biggest challenges with the old passport stamps was that officials and even those who are not within the system could purchase them at ordinary stationary shops and fake the features. " In the past few months, we observed widespread misuse of these stamps with individuals illegally stamping people passports with fraudulently reproduced stamps," states BMA. The new BMA stamps have tighter security features.  "This initiative forms part of the BMA’s broader commitment to strengthening national security and represents a deliberate step towards enhancing the integrity of border control processes," reads a statement from BMA.  The new stamps will have an engraved BMA logo and the big five displayed on them.  "The BMA collaborated with Government Printing Works and designed the new stamps with the highest security standards including the BMA logo to prevent tampering, forgery and unauthorised use," states the report.  Another good feature is that the new stamp will indicate the type of border post travellers are using. For instance, those using air border posts will have an aircraft engraved on the stamp.  To minimise corruption, each immigration officer will have his/her stamp with a particular number. This will make it easy to trace
