The 7 best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg

The 7 best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg

Johannesburg might be known as the City of Gold, but it also shines in another way, with its gloriously dramatic summer storms. The weather here is generally kind all year round, never too hot or too cold, but between September and May, the Highveld comes alive with rolling thunder and sudden downpours. December is usually the wettest month, and this year, forecasters are predicting even wetter conditions stretching from spring into early summer. This isn’t your average drizzle either, Jozi’s subtropical climate and high altitude mean we see an unusually high number of lightning strikes (up to 20 flashes per square kilometre a year!), turning the sky into a light show on most summer afternoons. While it pays to be prepared - think checking the forecast, wearing proper shoes, packing a waterproof jacket, and driving carefully, sometimes the best move is to embrace it. Rainy days are a perfect excuse to slow down, switch gears, and explore a softer side of the city. So grab your umbrella and join us as we dive into the best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg, from cosy coffee spots and cultural hideaways to all-weather adventures worth braving the storm for.  RECOMMENDED 📍 The best things to do in JohannesburgđŸ›ïžÂ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏹 The best hotels in JohannesburgđŸœÂ The best restaurants in JohannesburgđŸș The best pubs and bars in Johannesburg Follow Time Out Johannesburg on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram!

For over two decades, Ntokozo Mbambo has been one of Africa’s most celebrated and sought-after voices. Her healing and soulful sound has brought hope to millions, uniting music lovers from all walks of life. From singing for presidents to performing the National Anthem at the 2024 Springbok rugby match, Ntokozo continues to shine brightly as one of South Africa’s most inspiring artists. She has also collaborated with top African musicians and shared stages with Grammy Award-winning artists like CeCe Winans, cementing her place among gospel’s finest. Originally from Durban, Ntokozo now calls Johannesburg home. She says one of the things she loves most about the city is its vibrant, fast-paced energy. “So, I come from a coastal area. Down there, people are very relaxed — very chilled. I don’t know whether it’s the sea breeze,” she laughs. “But what I love about Jo’burg is that it’s fast-paced. Oh, and I also love that there’s not much traffic during Christmas — because everybody’s gone home!” Another thing that stands out for her is the city’s diverse culinary scene. “I love food, okay? I love eating,” she admits with a smile. “My husband and I always try to find new restaurants to experience something different. A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

September is Heritage Month in South Africa, and what better way to celebrate than by indulging in some of Mzansi’s most loved street foods? Most of the dishes are paired with pap (maize meal), a popular staple in South African homes. Other people prefer ting ya mabele (fermented porridge), samp or steamed bread. To drink, the popular traditional drink is umqombothi (a South African traditional type of beer made from maize, maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast, and water) or ginger beer.  Street vendors often set up tables and chairs next to their mobile kitchens, creating a casual space for customers to enjoy their meals. These meals, commonly referred to as a “plate”, typically range from about R40 for pap with one type of meat and relish, to around R90 for a fuller option. Eating out on the street isn’t just about the food — it’s also a wonderful opportunity to mingle with locals and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.Below are some of the foods you can enjoy from local vendors who specialise in proudly South African dishes. The Maslow Time Square

The Maslow Time Square

4 out of 5 stars
When I first stepped into The Maslow Time Square, I was utterly blown away by the interior dĂ©cor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Even before reaching reception, I was left impressed - as soon as I drove into the parking lot, the security guard already had my details from the booking, so there was no need to produce documents or dig through my luggage. At reception, I was warmly welcomed with a smile, and despite my late arrival, the staff made me feel completely at ease. The hotel itself is vast, and its scale alone impressed me. Another plus is its accessibility - even by public transport. Why stay at The Maslow Time Square Hotel? This hotel offers more than just luxury – it provides peace of mind and a homely feel. It provides a calm and relaxing environment. It is beautifully designed and boasts breathtaking city views. The service throughout my stay was excellent, with staff genuinely committed to making guests comfortable. It is also the ideal place to meet up with business associates or spoil yourself with a break. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Time Square Hotel? I slept in the median

Flights between Joburg and this remote island to continue

Airlink has extended its flight offering between Johannesburg and St Helena — the remote island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Airlink has been operating flights between Johannesburg and St Helena since October 2017, after the island opened its airport. Before that, the island was only accessible by ship. "St Helena Government (SHG) and Airlink are pleased to announce the release of an 18-month forward flight schedule to St Helena. City plants 3,000 trees in one hour as part of its sustainability drive

The City of Johannesburg remains committed to sustainability and to creating a cleaner environment for residents and visitors alike. Over the years, the City has undertaken various tree-planting initiatives across different areas to expand Johannesburg’s green footprint and combat climate change. In its latest effort to create a more sustainable environment, the City has launched an initiative to plant one million trees in the coming three years. Trees play a vital role in improving air quality by absorbing pollutant gases and filtering particles such as dust and smoke. They also help reduce the risk of natural disasters such as floods and play a key role in protecting biodiversity. However, urban expansion has contributed to the loss of green spaces and the cutting down of trees in many parts of the city. To address this, the Johannesburg Zoo, in partnership with the Fourways Improvement District, planted 3,000 trees in just one hour on Tuesday, 11 November. This was shared on the City of Johannesburg's social media pages.  The indigenous Celtis Africana trees were planted between Fourways and Diepsloot as part of the Presidential One Million Trees Programme, which aims to improve air quality and create more livable urban spaces. “We are planting a legacy of pride, partnership, and renewal,” said Executive Mayor Cllr Sello Dada Morero in a statement posted on Facebook. The Mayor added that the initiative “goes beyond beautification - it’s about reclaiming and rejuvenating ur

She explains that her clientele are incredibly diverse, and every item that comes through the door tells a story. “I’ve had things donated from all kinds of people and backgrounds - and many share the stories behind the items. You often get donations from deceased estates, people downscaling, or even someone who found something while cleaning their pool! As you unpack their stuff, you learn about them. It’s almost like forming a little relationship with the donor through their belongings.” Over the years, Michelle has watched her store grow from strength to strength, helping her build strong relationships with locals, giving products a second life, and bringing hope to others. “I think when we started, it was fairly new, but it’s exp

The operation will take place on Saturday morning until early afternoon. “Motorists in and around Johannesburg Central should prepare for rolling road closures and potential delays on Saturday, 15 November, between 9am and 1pm. The JMPD will lead the coordinated operation alongside the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Gauteng Traffic Police, and the South African Police Service.” The city has advised motorists and residents to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time on the roads. “Our priority is the safety and convenience of all road users across Johannesburg. We want to make sure that residents, commuters, and visitors can move around the city safely and efficiently, even with the increased traffic expected ahead of the summit,” JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said

Joburg gets new library at Victoria Yards

Exciting news for book lovers, Johannesburg is about to get a brand-new community library. Bridge Books, one of the city’s most beloved independent bookstores, has announced that it’s opening a container library in Victoria Yards - a vibrant arts and culture precinct in Johannesburg . Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, owner Griffin Shea says residents in and around the area will be able to use the new space as soon as next month. “The official launch is on the 4th of December,” he reveals. According to Griffin, work is already underway at the site. “The librarian has been busy getting things organised – covering books, shelving them properly, and sorting out all those details,” he says. The new container library is being sponsored by Gearhouse, a state-of-the-art equipment and technical solutions company based near Victoria Yards. “They’re a neighbourhood – just around the corner from Victoria Yards. They’re sponsoring the librarian, and there’s another group called Chabad House, which runs similar programmes in schools around the country,” Griffin explains. Unlike other library projects previously run by Chabad House that focused mainly on schools, this one will cater to the broader community. “What’s different about this one is that it’s the first time they’re doing a library meant to be more of a community space rather than being attached to a specific school,” he says. The aim is for the library to become a vibrant hub for reading, learning, and local storytelling. “We’r

Johannesburg's hostels to get free Wi-Fi

The City of Johannesburg remains committed to providing free digital access and connectivity to residents and visitors. Over the past few years, the city has been rolling out public Wi-Fi in central areas across Johannesburg. In its latest initiative, the Gauteng Department of e-Government has announced plans to implement free Wi-Fi to hostels around the city. Last Wednesday, the department shared images on Facebook showing MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini meeting with leaders from various hostels in Johannesburg to discuss the rollout of Wi-Fi under the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) in their communities. “This initiative aims to close the digital divide and help residents gain better access to the internet,” the department announced. According to Egoli Jozi News, the rollout has already begun and is expected to continue until December 2025. The project forms part of the GPN’s expansion programme, which focuses on servicing previously disadvantaged areas - including townships, informal settlements, and hostels, collectively known as TISH areas. Some of the hostels that will benefit include Diepkloof, Mzimhlophe, Jabulani, Madala Hostel, Helen Joseph, Dobsenville, George Goge, Nobuhle, Denver, Nancefield, Alexandra, Dube, Mapetla, and Orlando West. What this means for Joburg residents  Hostels have long served as places of refuge, offering affordable accommodation when compared to apartments and flats. They form an important part of South Africa’s history - many residents migrated f

The Global Citizen NOW action summit has announced Johannesburg as the host city

Big news for Jozi! The Global Citizen NOW action summit is heading to Africa for the very first time - and Johannesburg has been chosen as the host city. The summit will take place on November 21 at the Sandton Convention Centre, just a day before the G20 Summit, which is scheduled for November 22–23. This marks another milestone, as it will also be the first time the G20 is held in South Africa. The event will bring together government leaders, private sector investors, and philanthropies from all over the world. It promises a powerful line-up of speakers, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), and Hakainde Hichilema (President of Zambia). Actress, humanitarian, and Global Citizen Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha will host the summit, while The Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, will also take to the stage as one of the featured speakers. According to a statement from Global Citizen: “The campaign aims to secure commitments to provide clean energy access for 10 million households, with 4.6 million already pledged to date. Beyond this, discussions will focus on strengthening global health security, driving climate resilience, and shaping shared priorities aligned with the G20’s 2025 themes of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability — all with the end goal of ending extreme poverty and defending the planet.” President Cyril Ramaphosa added: "Africa’s moment is now. Our continent holds the key to a more sustainable, equi

More facilities for Smart ID and passport applications coming to Joburg

South Africans will soon have more places to renew or apply for their Smart IDs and passports. This follows an announcement by Standard Bank, confirming that additional bank branches offering these services are in the pipeline. According to a report by BusinessTech, the bank plans to launch 20 additional branches equipped to handle Smart ID and passport applications by 2026.  This comes as a relief as the government plans to discontinue the green ID book, and has been expanding Smart ID card application points. The Smart IDs were launched in 2013 to replace easily forged green ID books.  Relief for South Africans Until recently, these services were only available at Home Affairs offices, which often resulted in long queues and frustrated citizens — many of whom would spend hours waiting, only to be turned away due to high demand. In August 2025, Home Affairs announced a partnership with First National Bank (FNB) and Standard Bank to enable Smart ID and passport applications through select bank branches and mobile platforms. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said: “I am delighted that FNB and Standard Bank are the latest banks to partner with Home Affairs to expand the offering of our services across the entire country. This new digital partnership model that harnesses the power of technology will dramatically increase Home Affairs’ footprint and bring us closer than ever before to delivering our vision of ‘Home Affairs @ Home.’ I am grateful to them for committing to demon
