The best vegan restaurants in Johannesburg

The best vegan restaurants in Johannesburg

Millions of people around the world take part in Veganuary, a global challenge that encourages individuals to follow a fully plant-based diet throughout January. The movement appeals to many for a variety of reasons, with health being one of the main drivers. Vegan diets often encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole foods, while reducing their intake of processed foods.  According to Healthline, a well-balanced vegan diet can aid in weight management, particularly when meals are eaten in moderation and combined with regular exercise. The publication also notes that a plant-based diet may lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes, improve kidney function, and help regulate blood sugar levels.  However, consulting a healthcare practitioner before making any major dietary changes is always advisable.  As veganism continues to grow, restaurants across the world are expanding their plant-based offerings. Johannesburg, in particular, boasts several eateries that cater exclusively to vegans.   RECOMMENDEDđŸ›ïžÂ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏹 The best hotels in JohannesburgđŸœÂ The best restaurants in JohannesburgđŸș The best pubs and bars in Johannesburg Follow Time Out Johannesburg on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram!

A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

September is Heritage Month in South Africa, and what better way to celebrate than by indulging in some of Mzansi’s most loved street foods? Most of the dishes are paired with pap (maize meal), a popular staple in South African homes. Other people prefer ting ya mabele (fermented porridge), samp or steamed bread. To drink, the popular traditional drink is umqombothi (a South African traditional type of beer made from maize, maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast, and water) or ginger beer.  Street vendors often set up tables and chairs next to their mobile kitchens, creating a casual space for customers to enjoy their meals. These meals, commonly referred to as a “plate”, typically range from about R40 for pap with one type of meat and relish, to around R90 for a fuller option. Eating out on the street isn’t just about the food — it’s also a wonderful opportunity to mingle with locals and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.Below are some of the foods you can enjoy from local vendors who specialise in proudly South African dishes. Apartheid Museum

Apartheid Museum

3 out of 5 stars
There are some places that leave a lasting impression on you long after you walk out the door. The Apartheid Museum is one of those places. Having lived in Johannesburg for decades, I’m almost ashamed to admit that I had never visited the museum before. It had always been on my bucket list, but I kept putting it off. Maybe because we learn so much about apartheid in school, read about it in textbooks, and watch films based on that painful chapter in our history, it can feel like we already understand it. But nothing prepares you for walking through those gates - the experience felt deeply emotional. The museum represents a rich and painful history, but it also tells a story of victory, resilience and the strength of South Africans who endured unimaginable hardship and still fought for freedom. The vibe  I visited on a Saturday, and the museum was busy. What stood out to me was how many international visitors there were, something I’ve heard is quite common. It was a reminder that South Africa’s story has resonated far beyond just our country. A tour guide takes visitors through the museum, walking you through the corridors and exhibitions and unpacking how apartheid took root in South Africa. You see the faces of those who helped enforce segregation, but alongside that, you witness the resistance, the courage and the long road toward democracy. As people moved through the museum's corridors, the mood visibly shifted - you could see it on the faces. Some visitors stood in silen
Ukkƍ restaurant

Ukkƍ restaurant

4 out of 5 stars
If there are three words to describe Ukkƍ restaurant, they would be aesthetics, vibes, and excellent service. From the moment I first came across the restaurant on Instagram, I was sold. The food photography alone was enough to make anyone hungry, and I knew immediately that I had to experience it for myself. The vibe I decided to visit on a Wednesday afternoon for a relaxed girls’ date. Since it was during the week, the restaurant was pleasantly calm and not overcrowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The reception staff welcomed us warmly, and our table had already been prepared as I had booked a week in advance.  We were seated near the window, giving us a beautiful view of the lively atmosphere outside, complete with luxury cars and the unmistakable Sandton energy. Before our meal officially began, we were served crispy hand-cut chips as a starter snack. As someone who loves snacks and comfort bites, I thoroughly enjoyed them. They were simple but delicious and set the tone for the rest of the experience. The service throughout the afternoon was impressive. Our waiter, Ntombifikile Madlala, was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, and the food arrived without long delays, something I appreciated. To warm ourselves up on the chilly Johannesburg day, we started with tea before diving into the main experience: the food.   The food Being a seafood lover, sushi and prawns were an absolute must for me. We ordered tempura prawns alongside sushi,
Peermont D’oreale Grande Hotel

Peermont D’oreale Grande Hotel

5 out of 5 stars
This hotel experience will forever be embedded in my mind as the standard for luxurious hotels. From the moment I walked into the D’oreale Grande, just by entering through the doors, I immediately felt like I had stepped into a super luxurious, expensive space. The hotel doesn’t hold back; it screams posh, high-end amenities, and it reflects a level of detail that you don’t come across every day. There is something about the way the hotel introduces itself to you. The entrance alone is captivating. You are met with gold dĂ©cor, high-end mirrors, marble finishes, and an incredible amount of lighting that highlights every corner of the space. The cleanliness is immediately noticeable, and the attention to detail in how everything is placed - from flower pots to art pieces- shows intention. The ceilings, the tiles, the colour coordination, the textures - everything works together to create a feeling of superiority. It feels like you’ve stepped into a hidden gem right in the heart of Johannesburg. Located within Emperors Palace, the hotel offers both luxury and convenience, making it feel like an escape while still being within reach of everything. First Impressions & Arrival Experience The experience doesn’t just begin at the hotel room door; it starts the moment you arrive. What I loved was that our car felt completely safe, and from the moment we stepped out, the staff were ready to assist us with our bags. That level of attentiveness made everything feel seamless and welcoming
Sinn Restaurant

Sinn Restaurant

5 out of 5 stars
Launched in South Africa in September 2024, Sinn has quickly positioned itself as a standout dining destination in Sandton. It delivers a bold Italian-inspired experience where dinner truly becomes a matter of theatre, and pleasure is at the forefront of everything served. Sinn is a restaurant that offers pleasant unforgattable memories. First Impressions & Atmosphere From the moment you walk in, Sinn sets the tone. The dark, moody interiors, striking art pieces, and dramatic lighting create a sense of intimacy, exclusivity and romance. In fact, the restaurant became popular for its date night specials, which were sadly discontinued. However, I had the pleasure of taking my partner and enjoying the dining experience with him. That was deifinitely a good choice. We went on a Tuesday afternoon, so the restaurant was not packed. One of the striking features about the decor is the ceiling designs which shift throughout the dining experience. The restaurant introduces different themes and moods that make the space feel dynamic.  There’s a balance between privacy and vibrancy, with both a main dining area and more secluded spaces for intimate moments, perfect for date nights or special occasions. The Food: A Perfect 10 Every dish served was nothing short of exceptional. A consistent 10/10 across the board. * Complimentary bread: Crisp on the outside, soft and silky on the inside - the perfect way to start the dining experience. Starters: * The mussels in a creamy chardonnay sauce w
Tashas Nelson Mandela Square

Tashas Nelson Mandela Square

3 out of 5 stars
Tashas has long been a favourite among Joburgers, so when its Nelson Mandela Square branch closed late last year, many were left disappointed - but also curious to see what the new space would bring. Fortunately, I had the chance to visit the revamped restaurant, and it’s safe to say: the wait was worth it. First Impressions: A Beautiful Transformation I visited on Wednesday, 1 April, during lunchtime, and the restaurant was buzzing. Whether it was the month-end rush or Tasha’s undeniable popularity, the space was filled with diners of all ages, from families to business professionals. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by how beautifully the restaurant is reimagined. If you’ve been to Tashas before, you’ll immediately notice the difference. The old space has been replaced with more refined, modern fixtures that elevate the entire look. The redesign leans into earthy tones and elegant textures, creating a calm yet sophisticated setting. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere remained peaceful - a testament to the thoughtful layout and design. The Concept: Global Inspiration with Local Touches Named after its founder, Natasha Sideris, Tashas continues to draw inspiration from places like Marbella in Spain, blending Mediterranean influences with local flair. What stands out is their commitment to local craftsmanship - all the new furniture was sourced from a Cape Town-based company, adding a proudly South African touch to the globally inspired space. The revamp also aims to p
Saigon Suzy Fourways

Saigon Suzy Fourways

5 out of 5 stars
Let me just put it out there, I think I have officially found my favourite restaurant in Jozi. From karaoke booths to flavour-packed Vietnamese-inspired dishes, Saigon Suzy in Fourways delivers a dining experience that is hard to forget. With vibrant décor, generous portions, and standout dishes, this restaurant is everything you want and more. First impressions There is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Fourways, and it goes by the name of Saigon Suzy. When I first decided to visit, I had no idea what to expect. My colleague Andrew Hallett saw the massive burger that vlogger Joe Fleming had posted on Instagram. One look at it and our team knew that this had to be our next restaurant review.  From the moment you arrive, the restaurant makes a striking first impression. The entrance alone sets the tone - the space is large, stylish, and beautifully designed.  Decor and vibes The décor blends modern elements with nostalgic touches, creating an atmosphere that feels both vibrant and welcoming.  One of the most eye-catching design features is the colourful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. These were specially sourced from overseas, and they instantly elevate the space, giving the restaurant a playful yet sophisticated look. One particularly beautiful design detail is a glass display shaped like a tree, where glasses hang delicately - a small touch that adds a lot of character to the space. Did I mention the gigantic decorative trees that are absolutely stunning? The wal
Cowfish Waterfall Corner

Cowfish Waterfall Corner

3 out of 5 stars
Set in the heart of Waterfall City, Midrand, Cowfish is easily one of the coolest dining spots in the area. I discovered it the way many of us do these days - while scrolling through Instagram, craving something delicious. Their ribs-and-wings lunch special for R189 immediately caught my attention. As a lover of both, I knew I had to try it. I got into the car and headed to the restaurant. Waterfall City itself has a distinctive upmarket vibe, popular for both business meetings and relaxed outings. I visited on a Thursday just before noon, and the area was calm and pleasantly quiet. Arriving a few minutes before opening time, I was among the first guests, but within an hour the restaurant began filling up with groups of professionals, friends, and diners of varying ages enjoying lunch. First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is visually striking, elegant, and welcoming, with natural tones of brown and grey, and warm lighting complemented by greenery throughout the space. The dĂ©cor feels modern, and there’s also a lovely outdoor seating area that many guests chose, especially on the sunny day of my visit. While I came specifically for the ribs and wings, I learned that the restaurant runs several specials, including a popular bottomless sushi offering on weekends. I happened to meet one of the co-partners, Craig Mhiza, who insisted that I shouldn’t leave without trying the sushi; advice I’m very glad I followed. Drinks  I started with drinks to cool down from the heat
The Vegan Chef Sandton

The Vegan Chef Sandton

4 out of 5 stars
Let me start with a disclaimer: I am a big meat-eater. So, exploring vegan cuisine was never really high on my bucket list, but when I got the opportunity to visit The Vegan Chef in Sandton, I was excited to stretch myself and experience something outside my usual comfort zone. The drive to Sandton was easy, and once I arrived at the shopping centre where the restaurant is located, finding it was effortless. I simply asked around and was immediately pointed in the right direction. The area itself was beautiful, and because I went in the early afternoon, it wasn’t too busy-making for a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. The vibe When I first walked into the restaurant, my immediate thought was how intimate the space felt. It isn’t a massive venue, but that adds to its charm.  I was greeted by friendly staff, and the owner herself, Sue Gajathar, was seated inside at the time. The staff paid close attention to detail, the seating was comfortable, the tables were well arranged, and everything felt thoughtfully put together. The restaurant was neat and felt cosy, chilled, and welcoming.  On the day I visited, I even spotted proudly South African celebrity chef Lorna Maseko enjoying her meal, which spoke volumes about the restaurant’s appeal. The vibe was instantly good. There was a couple dining nearby, clearly enjoying their meal, and the gentleman, who happened to be American and now living in South Africa, couldn’t stop raving about the restaurant. He told me The Vegan Chef is hi
Vaal Villa

Vaal Villa

4 out of 5 stars
Time Out Says Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal Villa is an ideal getaway destination for large groups looking to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories. At the beginning of every year, my family makes it a tradition to set the tone for the year ahead by going on vacation together, prioritising bonding time and shared experiences. This January, we chose Vaal Villa in Vanderbijlpark, which offers seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. With a group of 11 adults and four children, I was slightly anxious about whether the property would truly cater to all our needs. From the moment we arrived, those concerns quickly disappeared. Why stay at Vaal Villa?   Large wooden gates secure the property and feature a striking, castle-like architectural design. While the exterior wall near the gate may not immediately impress and almost feels intentionally rustic or vintage, the inside of the property is nothing short of breathtaking. Once inside, you’re welcomed by well-maintained green lawns and neatly trimmed trees, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The gate entrance itself gives off an “old-money” aesthetic, which we absolutely loved. Stepping into the villa is an experience on its own. The interiors are elegant and stylish, blending luxury with a vintage farmhouse feel. The high ceilings and beautifully decorated entrance make for a perfect photo spot. The property has two storeys, with the ground floor featuring two large, fully equipped kitchens fitted with moder
Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

4 out of 5 stars
Johannesburg boasts an impressive culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants and dining experiences that cater to every type of food enthusiast. Among these standout eateries is Mad Nomad, a restaurant that truly deserves the spotlight - not only for its exceptional food, but also for its warm service, prime location, inviting ambience, and unmistakable vibe. The Vibe  On 31 December, I was looking for a dining experience that would meaningfully close out 2025 and usher in the new year with beautiful memories. I also wanted to celebrate my birthday, making the occasion even more special. My search led me to Mall of Africa, one of the largest malls on the continent and a hub for diverse dining options. As I walked through the mall, Mad Nomad immediately caught my attention. Its exterior dĂ©cor was elegant and inviting, quietly calling you in - and I’m glad I listened. From the moment I entered, I was blown away by the stunning interior and warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. Despite it being New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and enjoyable. Service was prompt, professional, and warm throughout. The Food  The menu was refreshingly easy to navigate and not overwhelming, which I loved. It offered a beautiful selection of Turkish-inspired dishes, including lskender kebab, salads, and soups. The eatery also serves African cuisine such as sheep head and pap. My family and I opted for the meat platter, which featured lamb, chicken, Adana kebab, fillet cubes, chi
Time Square Hotel

Time Square Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
When I first stepped into Time Square Hotel, I was utterly blown away by the interior dĂ©cor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Even before reaching reception, I was left impressed - as soon as I drove into the parking lot, the security guard already had my details from the booking, so there was no need to produce documents or dig through my luggage. At reception, I was warmly welcomed with a smile, and despite my late arrival, the staff made me feel completely at ease. The hotel itself is vast, and its scale alone impressed me. Another plus is its accessibility - even by public transport. Why stay at Time Square Hotel? This hotel offers more than just luxury – it provides peace of mind and a homely feel. It provides a calm and relaxing environment. It is beautifully designed and boasts breathtaking city views. The service throughout my stay was excellent, with staff genuinely committed to making guests comfortable. It is also the ideal place to meet up with business associates or spoil yourself with a break. What are the rooms like at Time Square Hotel? I slept in the median king room. At first glance

Winter gets a plant-based twist as The Vegan Chef unveils exciting menu items

As temperatures begin to drop, many restaurants begin revamping their menus to suit the colder season, and one of Johannesburg’s popular vegan eateries, The Vegan Chef, is doing just that. Known for its creative plant-based offerings, the restaurant has introduced a range of new winter menu items designed to bring warmth, comfort and bold flavour to customers while staying true to its environmentally conscious values. The latest additions include potato samosas, a plant-based butter chickn or beans bunny chows, carrot cake and freshly baked scones served with plant-based cream and jam , all aimed at giving customers more variety during the colder months. Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, Chef Su explained that the menu focuses on comfort food with a unique vegan spin, offering dishes customers would not typically find elsewhere. “It’s a very comfort-food sort of menu that you cannot get anywhere else because you can’t get a creamy sauce option like the butter chicken in a plant-based format,” said Chef Su. While the official launch was planned for 1 June, chef Su says customer demand brought the new menu items forward sooner than expected. “We were going to launch it on the 1st of June, and while we were doing trials in store, customers kept walking in asking, 'Can we have a taster?' I realised this was not going to reach the 1st of June,” she said. Chef Su also highlighted the carrot cake as an early customer favourite. “It’s such a winner. It has such a beautiful spice ele

Inside scoop: New restaurant set to open in Sandton

There is nothing quite as exciting as hearing that a new restaurant is on the way. For Joburg foodies, that kind of news spreads fast. So, there I was, minding my own business and enjoying a meal at Ukkƍ Restaurant in Sandton, when I happened to strike up a conversation with the manager, Percy Nyama. Now, the journalist in me could not let an opportunity like that slide. Moments with management don't come around every day, so naturally, I had to ask whether there was anything exciting in the pipeline. To my surprise, Percy revealed that foodies are in for a serious treat, as the restaurant is preparing to expand with the opening of a brand-new dining spot in just a few weeks’ time. The new restaurant, VLAMÓ, will also be based in Sandton, this time at the newly opened Sandton Gate Central. And from the sounds of it, this is not going to be just another extension of the brand. “It’s going to be bigger than this,” Percy said when asked about the size of the new space. He also hinted at a fresh menu offering, although loyal diners can still expect some of the signature flavours that have made Ukkƍ one of Sandton’s favourite dining destinations. “So, with the menu, we’re going to deviate a little bit. It’s not going to be the same concept, but it’s going to be our sister company,” he explained. When asked when Joburgers can officially start making reservations, Percy kept things mysterious, saying, “It shall be confirmed in a few weeks’ time,” while encouraging food lovers to kee

Anti-suicide campaign aims to build a better society and restore men's dignity

One of the difficult conversations often neglected is the mental health struggles many boys and men face, struggles that can sometimes lead to suicide. Every year, thousands of men take their own lives, leaving families and loved ones wondering what could have gone wrong, especially given that men often choose to fight their battles in silence.  Anti-suicide activist Nkululeko Khanyi, founder of Ungazibulali Awareness Campaign, is hoping to challenge that silence and break the stigma around mental health, especially among men. Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, Khanyi said many men are still raised with the belief that they are not allowed to cry or express emotion, and that pressure often leaves them suffering in silence. With his latest nationwide campaign, starting in Johannesburg, titled Ungazibulali Ndoda - loosely translated as “Don’t kill yourself, man” - Khany hopes to bring men together from all walks of life for honest conversations around mental health. He says the goal is to create a space where men can feel seen, supported and reminded that they are not alone in whatever challenges they may be facing. Khanyi, who is also a suicide survivor, says he has been running the Ungazibulali Awareness Campaign for the past 14 years, and the biggest reward has been seeing lives changed. “I was saved from committing suicide. I am the beacon of hope, and I want to save the next person. Against all odds and challenges you come across in life, don't give up. Suicide is not an o

Gen-Z puts community and sustainability at the heart of his business

It is often said that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That is exactly what Notha Buthelezi, a 25-year-old from Johannesburg, decided to do. Together with his sister, Victorious, he runs the Holistiq Wellness House in Glen Austin, Midrand - a business born from a personal need and a desire to create something meaningful for others. Notha, who studied sports science, said he originally dreamed of becoming a professional rugby player and one day representing the Springboks. But life had other plans. While pursuing his passion for sport, he found it difficult to access wellness products that suited his lifestyle, were healthy, effective, and did not interfere with hormones. Many of the products he came across were either too expensive or did not align with the kind of holistic approach he wanted for his well-being. That challenge eventually led to a life-changing conversation with his sister Victorious, who was also passionate about beauty and wellness and wanted affordable, sustainable products that were gentle on the skin. The two later teamed up with a homoeopathic doctor, Dr Pillay, who assists with developing their range of all-natural products and also consults from the wellness house on selected days. A visit to the wellness house offers more than just products. Clients can access wellness consultations, purchase products and enjoy treatments in a space designed to care for them holistically. Notha explained that what sets their products apart is that they are m

FlySafair continues scheduled flights despite facing overbooking tribunal case

One of South Africa’s most popular airlines, FlySafair, is facing scrutiny over its overbooking practices after the National Consumer Commission (NCC) referred the airline to the National Consumer Tribunal. The case concerns flights allegedly overbooked between November 2024 and January 2025, with thousands of passengers reportedly affected. Top Auto states that the NCC was drawn to the matter when a consumer reportedly purchased a ticket and, upon arrival to check in, was informed that no seats were available because the flight was overbooked. This was not the only complaint the NCC received.  Despite the ongoing tribunal proceedings, FlySafair has reassured customers that all flights are operating as scheduled and that bookings remain unaffected. In a statement, the airline said it is fully cooperating with the NCC’s referral to the tribunal and defended its actions, saying it acted “lawfully, transparently and in good faith, with due and careful regard to the rights of consumers.” FlySafair also explained that overbooking is a common practice among airlines worldwide to account for passengers who do not show up for their flights. "Overbooking is widely used by airlines globally as a mechanism to account for anticipated no-show passengers, improve operational efficiency and help keep air travel affordable," it said in the statement.  The airline said the overbooking did not affect the majority of its customers.  “During the period under review, more than 99.98% of FlySafair

Honouring the Irish: Bridge Books brings Bloomsday to Johannesburg

June 16 is not only significant in South Africa’s history, but it is also an important date for the Irish community around the world. Every year, Irish people celebrate Bloomsday - an annual literary celebration dedicated to Ulysses, the groundbreaking novel written by James Joyce. The book, which follows a single day in Dublin, carries deep cultural and historical significance for Ireland. This year, Bridge Books is bringing Bloomsday to Johannesburg with a uniquely South African twist through an event titled Bloomsday at Bridge. The celebration will feature readings from Ulysses in different languages, including isiZulu, creating a powerful fusion between Irish literary tradition and South African cultural identity. The event will also feature conversations with South African authors Ivan Vladislavić and Terry-Ann Adams, who will unpack how literature can bring cities to life on the page.Through the event, Bridge Books says it hopes to encourage deeper reflection on Johannesburg as a city worthy of literary focus.  "Joyce said about writing Ulysses, that he wanted to 'give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed,'" said Bridge Books in a statement.  The organisers explained that this vision aligns closely with their own vision: to view Johannesburg as 'complex, poetic and worthy of literary focus'. Beyond the literary discussions and multilingual readings, the event promises a vibrant cultural ex
