The best vegan restaurants in Johannesburg

The best vegan restaurants in Johannesburg

Millions of people around the world take part in Veganuary, a global challenge that encourages individuals to follow a fully plant-based diet throughout January. The movement appeals to many for a variety of reasons, with health being one of the main drivers. Vegan diets often encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole foods, while reducing their intake of processed foods.  According to Healthline, a well-balanced vegan diet can aid in weight management, particularly when meals are eaten in moderation and combined with regular exercise. The publication also notes that a plant-based diet may lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes, improve kidney function, and help regulate blood sugar levels.  However, consulting a healthcare practitioner before making any major dietary changes is always advisable.  As veganism continues to grow, restaurants across the world are expanding their plant-based offerings. Johannesburg, in particular, boasts several eateries that cater exclusively to vegans.   RECOMMENDED🛏️ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏨 The best hotels in Johannesburg🍽 The best restaurants in Johannesburg🍺 The best pubs and bars in Johannesburg Follow Time Out Johannesburg on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram!

The Vegan Chef Sandton

The Vegan Chef Sandton

4 out of 5 stars
Let me start with a disclaimer: I am a big meat-eater. So, exploring vegan cuisine was never really high on my bucket list, but when I got the opportunity to visit The Vegan Chef in Sandton, I was excited to stretch myself and experience something outside my usual comfort zone. The drive to Sandton was easy, and once I arrived at the shopping centre where the restaurant is located, finding it was effortless. I simply asked around and was immediately pointed in the right direction. The area itself was beautiful, and because I went in the early afternoon, it wasn’t too busy-making for a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. The vibe When I first walked into the restaurant, my immediate thought was how intimate the space felt. It isn’t a massive venue, but that adds to its charm.  I was greeted by friendly staff, and the owner herself, Sue Gajathar, was seated inside at the time. The staff paid close attention to detail, the seating was comfortable, the tables were well arranged, and everything felt thoughtfully put together. The restaurant was neat and felt cosy, chilled, and welcoming.  On the day I visited, I even spotted proudly South African celebrity chef Lorna Maseko enjoying her meal, which spoke volumes about the restaurant’s appeal. The vibe was instantly good. There was a couple dining nearby, clearly enjoying their meal, and the gentleman, who happened to be American and now living in South Africa, couldn’t stop raving about the restaurant. He told me The Vegan Chef is hi
Vaal Villa

Vaal Villa

4 out of 5 stars
Time Out Says Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal Villa is an ideal getaway destination for large groups looking to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories. At the beginning of every year, my family makes it a tradition to set the tone for the year ahead by going on vacation together, prioritising bonding time and shared experiences. This January, we chose Vaal Villa in Vanderbijlpark, which offers seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. With a group of 11 adults and four children, I was slightly anxious about whether the property would truly cater to all our needs. From the moment we arrived, those concerns quickly disappeared. Why stay at Vaal Villa?   Large wooden gates secure the property and feature a striking, castle-like architectural design. While the exterior wall near the gate may not immediately impress and almost feels intentionally rustic or vintage, the inside of the property is nothing short of breathtaking. Once inside, you’re welcomed by well-maintained green lawns and neatly trimmed trees, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The gate entrance itself gives off an “old-money” aesthetic, which we absolutely loved. Stepping into the villa is an experience on its own. The interiors are elegant and stylish, blending luxury with a vintage farmhouse feel. The high ceilings and beautifully decorated entrance make for a perfect photo spot. The property has two storeys, with the ground floor featuring two large, fully equipped kitchens fitted with moder
Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

4 out of 5 stars
Johannesburg boasts an impressive culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants and dining experiences that cater to every type of food enthusiast. Among these standout eateries is Mad Nomad, a restaurant that truly deserves the spotlight - not only for its exceptional food, but also for its warm service, prime location, inviting ambience, and unmistakable vibe. The Vibe  On 31 December, I was looking for a dining experience that would meaningfully close out 2025 and usher in the new year with beautiful memories. I also wanted to celebrate my birthday, making the occasion even more special. My search led me to Mall of Africa, one of the largest malls on the continent and a hub for diverse dining options. As I walked through the mall, Mad Nomad immediately caught my attention. Its exterior décor was elegant and inviting, quietly calling you in - and I’m glad I listened. From the moment I entered, I was blown away by the stunning interior and warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. Despite it being New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and enjoyable. Service was prompt, professional, and warm throughout. The Food  The menu was refreshingly easy to navigate and not overwhelming, which I loved. It offered a beautiful selection of Turkish-inspired dishes, including lskender kebab, salads, and soups. The eatery also serves African cuisine such as sheep head and pap. My family and I opted for the meat platter, which featured lamb, chicken, Adana kebab, fillet cubes, chi

Time Square Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
When I first stepped into Time Square Hotel, I was utterly blown away by the interior décor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Even before reaching reception, I was left impressed - as soon as I drove into the parking lot, the security guard already had my details from the booking, so there was no need to produce documents or dig through my luggage. At reception, I was warmly welcomed with a smile, and despite my late arrival, the staff made me feel completely at ease. The hotel itself is vast, and its scale alone impressed me. Another plus is its accessibility - even by public transport. Why stay at Time Square Hotel? This hotel offers more than just luxury – it provides peace of mind and a homely feel. It provides a calm and relaxing environment. It is beautifully designed and boasts breathtaking city views. The service throughout my stay was excellent, with staff genuinely committed to making guests comfortable. It is also the ideal place to meet up with business associates or spoil yourself with a break. What are the rooms like at Time Square Hotel? I slept in the median king room. At first glance

Johannesburg to experience the first partial Solar Eclipse of 2026

Johannesburg to experience the first partial Solar Eclipse of 2026

The first solar eclipse of 2026 will take place this Tuesday. According to the Time and Date site, South Africa will experience a partial solar eclipse from 13:21 SAST to 16:03 SAST.   The moon will partially cover the sun for just under three hours, depending on location. According to several publications, only 8% of the sun in Johannesburg will be covered by the moon. NASA science states that the oldest recorded eclipse in human history may have been on November 30, 3340 B.C.E. Since then, the rare alignment of the sun has remained a fascinating celestial display.  Joburgers are urged to take safety precautions and not view the partial eclipse directly without proper protection, as it can damage their eyes.  According to NASA, even dark glasses are not safe for viewing the sun. Phones should also not be used to view the eclipse. The exercise could harm both the device and your eyes.  "Do not look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury," states NASA.  It recommends using certified solar eclipse glasses or safe indirect viewing methods.  "You can make your own eclipse projector using a cardboard box, a white sheet of paper, tape, scissors, and aluminium foil. With the Sun behind you, sunlight will stream through a pinhole punched into aluminium foil taped over a hole in one side of

The Coconut Bar serves sustainable drinks while creating jobs for Joburg youth

As South Africans battle scorching summer heat waves, many are seeking drinks that not only cool them down but also offer a healthier, more environmentally friendly option. The Coconut Bar, a family-run business based in Alberton, is answering that call with a unique concept: serving flavoured beverages directly from fresh coconuts. Founded nearly a decade ago by the Mohlala family, the business has grown from humble beginnings, trading from the back of a van at Kyalami Corner, to becoming a popular attraction at farmers’ markets across Johannesburg. Today, 26-year-old Thabo Mohlala stands at the forefront of the brand, continuing the vision his parents began. Mohlala recalls being introduced to entrepreneurship at just 12 years old, when he and his siblings accompanied their parents to markets to learn how to operate the business. Over the years, the family experimented with recipes for more than five years before perfecting flavours that are both delicious and environmentally conscious. The Coconut Bar’s drinks are served in whole coconuts using organic flavourings, including natural sugarcane juice. Popular options include mojito, plain coconut, margarita, pina colada, and strawberry, available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. Customers drink straight from the coconut, making the experience both refreshing and memorable. According to Mohlala, coconut water is naturally rich in electrolytes, making it an ideal hydrating beverage in extreme heat. The concept als

Fourways Rustic & Gourmet Market puts sustainability in the spotlight

Fourways Rustic & Gourmet Market puts sustainability in the spotlight

On Friday, 6 February, Time Out Johannesburg spent the evening at the Fourways Rustic & Gourmet Market, an event that usually takes place at the end of the month and draws hundreds of Joburgers eager to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy exceptional food, and unwind after a long week. But before we get into the details about the market, can I appreciate the venue, the Design Quarter piazza? What a beautiful space, and despite the 30 degrees Celsius outside, the setting felt welcoming and relaxed.  Before fully exploring the market, I caught up with Annah Moremela, the Marketing & Events Manager at Design Quarter, who explained why hosting the gourmet market every month is so important to them. At its core, she said, the market aligns with their own values - sustainability, healthy living, and supporting local enterprise. She also highlighted how the market opens doors for small, independent vendors - people you might not ordinarily encounter, who are doing remarkable things but may not have access to expensive retail spaces.  Early on, around 4 pm, there weren't many people at the market, allowing for a stroll through the stalls and a chance to admire the venue. As the sun went down, around 6 pm, people started streaming in, and the lights also came on, adding to the beauty of the outdoor space.   Recommended check-out spots As I walked through the market, I was impressed by the variety on offer: gourmet food and drinks, herbs, handcrafted jewellery, organic beauty products, cloth

Johannesburg's Mhulu Luxury Boutique Hotel shuts down

Guests planning to unwind at the popular Mhulu Luxury Boutique Hotel in Midrand, Johannesburg, will now need to make alternative arrangements, after city authorities ordered the establishment to close with immediate effect. The hotel, launched in December 2023, is known for hosting celebrities and admired for its beautiful views. It was forced to shut down following an inspection conducted by the City of Johannesburg on 02 February 2026.  According to the City of Johannesburg's website, the operation was led by Acting Regional Director Thaba Makgafela, alongside the JMPD Director Eldred Fortein for Bylaws Enforcement, and senior officials from Emergency Management Services (EMS), City Power, CRUM, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), and Johannesburg Water. Inspectors uncovered serious contraventions of municipal bylaws. Among the findings was that the hotel lacked approved building plans.  Officials also discovered that the property relied on a borehole as its main water source, despite not having applied for municipal approval to drill it. In addition, the hotel was allegedly illegally reconnected to a Johannesburg Water meter situated outside the premises. Authorities further revealed that the establishment had outstanding municipal debt exceeding R1.3 million. All these findings contributed to the decision to shut it down immediately. “This operation demonstrates Region A's unwavering commitment to enforcing City bylaws and restoring order.
