A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

A guide to Johannesburg's local street food

September is Heritage Month in South Africa, and what better way to celebrate than by indulging in some of Mzansi’s most loved street foods? Most of the dishes are paired with pap (maize meal), a popular staple in South African homes. Other people prefer ting ya mabele (fermented porridge), samp or steamed bread. To drink, the popular traditional drink is umqombothi (a South African traditional type of beer made from maize, maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast, and water) or ginger beer.  Street vendors often set up tables and chairs next to their mobile kitchens, creating a casual space for customers to enjoy their meals. These meals, commonly referred to as a “plate”, typically range from about R40 for pap with one type of meat and relish, to around R90 for a fuller option. Eating out on the street isn’t just about the food — it’s also a wonderful opportunity to mingle with locals and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.Below are some of the foods you can enjoy from local vendors who specialise in proudly South African dishes. Neighbourhood Diaries: Midrand

Neighbourhood Diaries: Midrand

Time and again, you might see Midrand trending on X (formerly Twitter). And more often than not, it’s because people are teasing it (and the people who live there) for quite a number of reasons. For starters, there’s a popular stereotype that people in Midrand like to act like they’ve got money when they actually don’t. You’ll see memes of someone driving a GTI, followed by an image of their apartment with nothing inside - no bed, just a mattress on the floor. Then there are the jokes about people from nearby areas like Tembisa who say they live in Midrand instead. But that’s not the full story. You’ll also hear that Midrand is where the vibe is. It’s a hotspot for young professionals who love to go out, socialise, and enjoy the lifestyle. There’s a certain energy to the place that appeals to the younger generation. As someone who actually lives in Midrand, let me take you on a journey of what it really means to stay here. Whether you’re coming through for the chisanyamas (braai spots), the buzzing car washes, the nightlife, or even just a visit to the ever-popular Mall of Africa, Midrand has something for everyone. And it doesn’t stop there. With places like Gallagher Estate and so much constantly happening around the area, living in Midrand is truly an experience on its own. What’s Midrand known for? Located between Johannesburg and Pretoria, Midrand has grown into one of Johannesburg's most sought-after suburbs. Known for its vibrant lifestyle, diverse community, and balan
Local Intel: Mudi Mudau

Local Intel: Mudi Mudau

Actress Mudi Mudau needs little introduction. She has appeared in drama series such as Queen Mudjadji, Muvhango on SABC2, and most recently Pimville. Through her roles, Mudau has cemented her reputation as a respected actress, particularly in productions that explore themes of tradition and heritage. The actress, who describes herself as fun, loyal, and ambitious, has also fallen deeply in love with Johannesburg. Her passion for acting began when she was still a little girl. One of her fondest memories is playing a zebra named Kwagga in a story about how zebras got their stripes. The play was performed at a special school for children with disabilities, and Mudau says it was the children's reaction that truly sparked her love for acting. Outside of acting, Mudau says she enjoys spending quality time with her family. One of her favourite things to do is simply sit under a tree and enjoy the shade, reflecting her deep appreciation for nature. She also enjoys being in the steam room or sauna. Having been born and raised in Limpopo, then later living in Cape Town before settling in Johannesburg, Mudau says there is a lot to fall in love with in the City of Gold.  When describing her move from Cape Town to Johannesburg, Mudau says the contrast between the two cities was striking. "Cape Town is more like a modern village; it's small, so you become familiar with your surroundings easily. Joburg is bigger, more spread out, so one feels you need to know people to get familiar," she sa

Tashas Nelson Mandela Square

Tashas Nelson Mandela Square

3 out of 5 stars
Tashas has long been a favourite among Joburgers, so when its Nelson Mandela Square branch closed late last year, many were left disappointed - but also curious to see what the new space would bring. Fortunately, I had the chance to visit the revamped restaurant, and it’s safe to say: the wait was worth it. First Impressions: A Beautiful Transformation I visited on Wednesday, 1 April, during lunchtime, and the restaurant was buzzing. Whether it was the month-end rush or Tasha’s undeniable popularity, the space was filled with diners of all ages, from families to business professionals. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by how beautifully the restaurant is reimagined. If you’ve been to Tashas before, you’ll immediately notice the difference. The old space has been replaced with more refined, modern fixtures that elevate the entire look. The redesign leans into earthy tones and elegant textures, creating a calm yet sophisticated setting. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere remained peaceful - a testament to the thoughtful layout and design. The Concept: Global Inspiration with Local Touches Named after its founder, Natasha Sideris, Tashas continues to draw inspiration from places like Marbella in Spain, blending Mediterranean influences with local flair. What stands out is their commitment to local craftsmanship - all the new furniture was sourced from a Cape Town-based company, adding a proudly South African touch to the globally inspired space. The revamp also aims to p
Saigon Suzy Fourways

Saigon Suzy Fourways

5 out of 5 stars
Let me just put it out there, I think I have officially found my favourite restaurant in Jozi. From karaoke booths to flavour-packed Vietnamese-inspired dishes, Saigon Suzy in Fourways delivers a dining experience that is hard to forget. With vibrant décor, generous portions, and standout dishes, this restaurant is everything you want and more. First impressions There is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Fourways, and it goes by the name of Saigon Suzy. When I first decided to visit, I had no idea what to expect. My colleague Andrew Hallett saw the massive burger that vlogger Joe Fleming had posted on Instagram. One look at it and our team knew that this had to be our next restaurant review.  From the moment you arrive, the restaurant makes a striking first impression. The entrance alone sets the tone - the space is large, stylish, and beautifully designed.  Decor and vibes The décor blends modern elements with nostalgic touches, creating an atmosphere that feels both vibrant and welcoming.  One of the most eye-catching design features is the colourful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. These were specially sourced from overseas, and they instantly elevate the space, giving the restaurant a playful yet sophisticated look. One particularly beautiful design detail is a glass display shaped like a tree, where glasses hang delicately - a small touch that adds a lot of character to the space. Did I mention the gigantic decorative trees that are absolutely stunning? The wal
Cowfish Waterfall Corner

Cowfish Waterfall Corner

3 out of 5 stars
Set in the heart of Waterfall City, Midrand, Cowfish is easily one of the coolest dining spots in the area. I discovered it the way many of us do these days - while scrolling through Instagram, craving something delicious. Their ribs-and-wings lunch special for R189 immediately caught my attention. As a lover of both, I knew I had to try it. I got into the car and headed to the restaurant. Waterfall City itself has a distinctive upmarket vibe, popular for both business meetings and relaxed outings. I visited on a Thursday just before noon, and the area was calm and pleasantly quiet. Arriving a few minutes before opening time, I was among the first guests, but within an hour the restaurant began filling up with groups of professionals, friends, and diners of varying ages enjoying lunch. First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is visually striking, elegant, and welcoming, with natural tones of brown and grey, and warm lighting complemented by greenery throughout the space. The dĂ©cor feels modern, and there’s also a lovely outdoor seating area that many guests chose, especially on the sunny day of my visit. While I came specifically for the ribs and wings, I learned that the restaurant runs several specials, including a popular bottomless sushi offering on weekends. I happened to meet one of the co-partners, Craig Mhiza, who insisted that I shouldn’t leave without trying the sushi; advice I’m very glad I followed. Drinks  I started with drinks to cool down from the heat
The Vegan Chef Sandton

The Vegan Chef Sandton

4 out of 5 stars
Let me start with a disclaimer: I am a big meat-eater. So, exploring vegan cuisine was never really high on my bucket list, but when I got the opportunity to visit The Vegan Chef in Sandton, I was excited to stretch myself and experience something outside my usual comfort zone. The drive to Sandton was easy, and once I arrived at the shopping centre where the restaurant is located, finding it was effortless. I simply asked around and was immediately pointed in the right direction. The area itself was beautiful, and because I went in the early afternoon, it wasn’t too busy-making for a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. The vibe When I first walked into the restaurant, my immediate thought was how intimate the space felt. It isn’t a massive venue, but that adds to its charm.  I was greeted by friendly staff, and the owner herself, Sue Gajathar, was seated inside at the time. The staff paid close attention to detail, the seating was comfortable, the tables were well arranged, and everything felt thoughtfully put together. The restaurant was neat and felt cosy, chilled, and welcoming.  On the day I visited, I even spotted proudly South African celebrity chef Lorna Maseko enjoying her meal, which spoke volumes about the restaurant’s appeal. The vibe was instantly good. There was a couple dining nearby, clearly enjoying their meal, and the gentleman, who happened to be American and now living in South Africa, couldn’t stop raving about the restaurant. He told me The Vegan Chef is hi
Vaal Villa

Vaal Villa

4 out of 5 stars
Time Out Says Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal Villa is an ideal getaway destination for large groups looking to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories. At the beginning of every year, my family makes it a tradition to set the tone for the year ahead by going on vacation together, prioritising bonding time and shared experiences. This January, we chose Vaal Villa in Vanderbijlpark, which offers seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. With a group of 11 adults and four children, I was slightly anxious about whether the property would truly cater to all our needs. From the moment we arrived, those concerns quickly disappeared. Why stay at Vaal Villa?   Large wooden gates secure the property and feature a striking, castle-like architectural design. While the exterior wall near the gate may not immediately impress and almost feels intentionally rustic or vintage, the inside of the property is nothing short of breathtaking. Once inside, you’re welcomed by well-maintained green lawns and neatly trimmed trees, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The gate entrance itself gives off an “old-money” aesthetic, which we absolutely loved. Stepping into the villa is an experience on its own. The interiors are elegant and stylish, blending luxury with a vintage farmhouse feel. The high ceilings and beautifully decorated entrance make for a perfect photo spot. The property has two storeys, with the ground floor featuring two large, fully equipped kitchens fitted with moder
Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

Mad Nomad Mall of Africa

4 out of 5 stars
Johannesburg boasts an impressive culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants and dining experiences that cater to every type of food enthusiast. Among these standout eateries is Mad Nomad, a restaurant that truly deserves the spotlight - not only for its exceptional food, but also for its warm service, prime location, inviting ambience, and unmistakable vibe. The Vibe  On 31 December, I was looking for a dining experience that would meaningfully close out 2025 and usher in the new year with beautiful memories. I also wanted to celebrate my birthday, making the occasion even more special. My search led me to Mall of Africa, one of the largest malls on the continent and a hub for diverse dining options. As I walked through the mall, Mad Nomad immediately caught my attention. Its exterior dĂ©cor was elegant and inviting, quietly calling you in - and I’m glad I listened. From the moment I entered, I was blown away by the stunning interior and warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. Despite it being New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and enjoyable. Service was prompt, professional, and warm throughout. The Food  The menu was refreshingly easy to navigate and not overwhelming, which I loved. It offered a beautiful selection of Turkish-inspired dishes, including lskender kebab, salads, and soups. The eatery also serves African cuisine such as sheep head and pap. My family and I opted for the meat platter, which featured lamb, chicken, Adana kebab, fillet cubes, chi
Time Square Hotel

Time Square Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
When I first stepped into Time Square Hotel, I was utterly blown away by the interior dĂ©cor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Even before reaching reception, I was left impressed - as soon as I drove into the parking lot, the security guard already had my details from the booking, so there was no need to produce documents or dig through my luggage. At reception, I was warmly welcomed with a smile, and despite my late arrival, the staff made me feel completely at ease. The hotel itself is vast, and its scale alone impressed me. Another plus is its accessibility - even by public transport. Why stay at Time Square Hotel? This hotel offers more than just luxury – it provides peace of mind and a homely feel. It provides a calm and relaxing environment. It is beautifully designed and boasts breathtaking city views. The service throughout my stay was excellent, with staff genuinely committed to making guests comfortable. It is also the ideal place to meet up with business associates or spoil yourself with a break. What are the rooms like at Time Square Hotel? I slept in the median king room. At first glance

The new Stella McCartney H&M collab launches in Sandton

The new Stella McCartney H&M collab launches in Sandton

In a world where fashion often overlooks animal rights and environmental impact, the latest collaboration between Stella McCartney and H&M offers a refreshing alternative. Two decades after their first partnership, the highly anticipated collection has officially landed in Sandton, giving local fashionistas access to the designer's signature sustainable style. The collection dropped on Thursday, 7 May, at the Sandton store.  Taking to social media, McCartney shared her excitement about the launch, while reinforcing her long-standing commitment to ethical fashion. Known for using environmentally friendly materials and avoiding animal products, she continues to advocate for a more responsible approach to dressing. "For me, this is not about compromise – it is about reach. If we keep sustainable innovation small, we keep its impact small. Fashion needs scalable solutions. It needs collaboration. And it needs brands to use their platforms responsibly. This collection is designed to be worn and made to last. x Stella," she wrote on Instagram.  The buzz around the collection proved just how strong the demand is, with social media users indicating that many items sold out in under an hour. For those who missed out in-store, selected pieces were also made available online. Beyond the hype, what sets McCartney's designs apart is their longevity, pieces created not just to trend, but to last. Born in London, Stella McCartney began her fashion journey in 1995, before launching her own l

Hantavirus: Airlines contact passengers from Johannesburg flights linked to deaths

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently reported growing concern around the Hantavirus - a group of zoonotic viruses carried by rodents that can cause disease in humans. On Monday, the Johannesburg Health District confirmed a rare cluster of hantavirus infections involving passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius, which was travelling from Argentina toward the Canary Islands and passing South African shores.  The first case involved a 70-year-old man who became ill while travelling from Ushuaia to Saint Helena Island. He passed away upon arrival on the island. His 69-year-old wife later collapsed at OR Tambo International Airport while attempting to catch a connecting KLM flight to the Netherlands. She was taken to Kempton Park for medical treatment, but also died. Health authorities are currently treating another patient in Johannesburg who was onboard the ship and medically evacuated to Johannesburg from Ascension Island via an Airlink charter after his condition deteriorated.  KLM has since confirmed that passengers who may have been in close contact with the deceased have been traced and notified through Dutch public health authorities to undergo testing. Meanwhile, Airlink also issued a statement to address the concerns: " The World Health Organisation and South African public health authorities are responding to a number of Hantavirus cases involving people on an Atlantic Ocean cruise ship. One of the ship’s passengers left the cruise at St Helena Island with th

Brace yourself: Johannesburg to experience the coldest night so far in 2026

Joburgers woke up to a chilly Thursday morning, but temperatures are set to drop even further as the day unfolds. Gauteng Weather took to social media to alert residents that the coldest night of 2026 so far will occur on Thursday, 07 May. Johannesburg is expected to drop to 5°C, while Pretoria will see temperatures of around 7°C. Nearby Vereeniging is forecast to reach a low of 6°C.   While the chill may be biting, residents are encouraged to prepare rather than panic, especially because the countdown to winter has officially begun, with May marking the start of Johannesburg’s colder, drier season. Time Out Tips For Going Out While residents of Johannesburg are known for embracing the sunshine and an active social lifestyle, a dip in temperature is unlikely to keep them indoors. Cold or not, the city’s vibrant spirit means people will still find ways to get out, stay warm, and enjoy themselves. Dress warmly, especially for those commuting or spending time outdoors. Warm clothes help you maintain your body temperature and prevent rapid heat loss from cold and wind. Exposure to such cold conditions without dressing properly can lead to dangerous health conditions like hypothermia.   Use blankets and throws to keep yourself warm without sacrificing style. There are plenty of nice throw blankets that can complement your outfit while keeping you cosy.  Indulge in hearty dishes and comforting drinks. Johannesburg’s vibrant dining scene offers plenty of cosy spots where diners can
Less delay, less stress: Driver's licenses could be ready in a week

Less delay, less stress: Driver's licenses could be ready in a week

Millions of South Africans rely on their cars to get from point A to point B, and to legally drive on the road, a valid driver’s licence is essential. But one of the biggest frustrations for motorists over the years has been the lengthy process of licence renewal. From standing in long queues to waiting weeks, and sometimes even a month, for a licence card to be ready for collection, the process has often left many drivers stressed and inconvenienced. However, this could soon change. The Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) recently revealed in its planned 2026/2027 strategy that the government aims to significantly reduce the turnaround time for driver’s licence renewals. In the coming years, motorists could potentially receive their renewed licence cards within just seven days. This move is expected to improve efficiency and reduce the long waiting periods many South Africans currently experience. Previously, it took around 23 working days for drivers to receive their renewed licence cards. That number has since improved slightly to about 21 working days, but the government’s long-term target is to reduce the waiting period to seven working days between the 2028/2029 financial years. To achieve this, the department says it will need to modernise outdated systems and machinery, strengthen cybersecurity measures, and improve customer service processes. The news follows earlier discussions around extending the validity period of driver’s licences. The government previously indi

Big Zulu brings magic to Emperors Palace with launch of new album

In case you missed it, one of Mzansi’s finest has dropped a brand-new project, and it’s already making waves. Umkhulu, Big Zulu’s sixth studio album, was released last week and celebrated in grand style at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace. Hundreds of Inkabi Nation supporters filled the venue, ready to experience the magic firsthand. The night kicked off with a lineup of local talent setting the tone. Fanatic SA opened the stage with high energy, followed by Starr Healer, who turned heads in a dazzling gold jacket. She performed fan favourite, Ngisayogana. Another standout performer was Lwah Ndlunkulu, whose powerful vocals lit up the venue. Already a fan favourite, her performance proved exactly why she remains one of Inkabi Nation’s brightest stars. Time OutLwah Ndlunkulu singing at Big Zulu album launch in Johannesburg Big Zulu later took to the stage to roaring applause. During his set, the singer unpacked the meaning behind the album title Umkhulu, which translates to “elder”. He explained that the name reflects his role in mentoring and uplifting emerging artists, such as Xolani Tshabalala, fondly known as Stallion, who is now making his mark in the industry. Tracks from the album were played on screen as he shared the stories behind them. Umkhulu is not just rich in sound; it is deeply introspective. Big Zulu touches on themes of love, friendship, resilience, and personal growth. Raised by his grandmother, he credits his upbringing for the emotional depth

Every day, millions rely on it to get to work, school and home. While headlines often highlight taxi-related conflicts, many operators quietly drive something far more powerful: positive change. One such man is Mr Petros Malema, the owner of Lemas Transport. His journey began years ago, when he worked as a municipal driver in Johannesburg. Over time, he transitioned from employee to entrepreneur, investing in his own taxis, a business he has successfully run for 19 years.  Malema recalls how his breakthrough came in 2008, when he expanded his operations between Johannesburg and Polokwane. At the time, he transported workers who had built lives in Johannesburg but maintained homes in Limpopo. Being someone who was also born and bred in Limpopo, these trips became more than just journeys; they became stories of resilience, sacrifice and hope. “I met women working in the kitchens (a word used to describe domestic workers) who would travel home at month-end with groceries and clothes for their families. I met men living in hostels, working hard to support loved ones back home,” he shares. Through these experiences, Malema built lasting relationships with his passengers, many of whom became like family. Today, he is not just a taxi owner but a respected figure in his community, particularly in Ivory Park and surrounding neighbourhoods. Supp

Putting animal welfare first: Low-cost sterilisation clinic launches in Jozi

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL), a non-profit organisation based in Regents Park, has launched a dedicated low-cost sterilisation clinic to better serve disadvantaged communities across Johannesburg. The clinic officially opened on Monday, 4 May. According to marketing manager Carren Nickloes, the initiative marks a shift towards a more proactive approach to animal wellness and aligns with their focus on preventive care.  "Our veterinary hospital is a welfare hospital, and we deal with low-income and unemployed, you know, so people who cannot afford to go to private vets. So basically, our primary goal is to sterilise, vaccinate animals, making them obviously safe, etc. So we look at sterilisation, primary healthcare, and vaccination," Carren told Time Out Johannesburg.  As an independent organisation, the AACL does not receive government funding and relies heavily on donations and fundraising efforts.“Every subsiding of sterilisation or treatment, we have to find that money to cover those costs. We pay the same amounts for drugs, etc., so although we are subsidising, we have to raise funds to help us. It's not as if we have millions of Rands; whatever we subsidise, we have to source the funds,” she added. A dedicated low-cost clinic While the organisation has long offered subsidised sterilisation services, the new facility formalises and expands that offering. “ Now, we put it into an actual clinic. So the cost of the sterilisation is far less than what you would do a

Traveling in and out of Jozi: Here is why you shouldn't panic about hantavirus

Johannesburg is a major travel hub, so it’s no surprise that news of hantavirus cases linked to international travel has caused unease among some residents. Over the weekend, reports emerged that three travellers who had been aboard a vessel sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde died after contracting hantavirus. One additional patient, believed to be linked to the same vessel, is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit at a Johannesburg hospital, in Sandton.  According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), one case has been laboratory-confirmed, while five others remain suspected. 'To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, and there are five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died, and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa, the World Health Organisation states on X.  What does this mean for Johannesburg? Despite concerns, health authorities have stressed that there is no need for widespread panic. Hantavirus is primarily contracted through exposure to infected rodents, specifically their urine, droppings, or saliva. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare, which significantly limits the likelihood of a broader outbreak in an urban setting like Johannesburg. How to reduce your risk The most effective way to prevent infection is to minimise contact with rodents and their waste. This includes: * Keeping homes and workspaces clean and free of food debris* Sealing holes or gaps

Joburgers urged to stay vigilant as malaria cases rise

Residents of Johannesburg are being urged to remain alert following a concerning rise in malaria cases across the province. The Johannesburg District Health Services has issued a warning highlighting an increase in both infections and related deaths, particularly in the early months of 2026. According to the department, between January and December 2025, a total of 666 malaria cases and seven deaths were recorded. However, in just the first quarter of 2026, from January to March, there have already been 414 confirmed cases and 11 deaths. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, raising alarm among health officials. As a bustling, diverse city, Johannesburg is known for welcoming people from all walks of life and across the globe, including regions where malaria is more common. While malaria itself is not spread directly from person to person, infected individuals entering the city can increase the risk if local mosquitoes become infected with the parasite. Combined with the city’s high levels of movement and migration, awareness and prevention are especially important. How malaria is contracted Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. While it is preventable and treatable, delayed diagnosis and lack of awareness can lead to severe complications or death. What led to the increase in Johannesburg According to JHB Health District, the spike in cases has been largely attributed to in

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Johannesburg

Residents in Johannesburg are warned to exercise caution after the South African Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Tuesday, 21 April. According to the weather service, the storm is expected to develop around midday and last until midnight. The warning is not limited to Gauteng; parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga are also expected to be affected by similar conditions. Forecasters have warned that the thunderstorms could bring intense downpours, leading to flooding. This poses a significant risk to both motorists and pedestrians, as flooded roads can become dangerous. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded routes, reduce speed during heavy rainfall, and allow for extra travel time. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and consider alternative routes where possible. In addition to flooding, the storm is expected to bring strong, potentially damaging winds. These conditions could result in fallen trees, power outages, and damage to infrastructure. Informal settlements remain particularly vulnerable, with the risk of structural damage to homes and displacement of residents. The South African Weather Service further cautioned that the severe weather may impact property, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock, especially in exposed areas. Residents are urged to remain indoors during the peak of the storm where possible. This latest warning comes after Gauteng has experienced a series of thunderstorms in recent months, many of which have caused s
