Charity organisation restores the dignity of GBV survivors

Nelson Mandela once said: “Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression”. South Africa is still engaged in the fight to liberate women and children who are victims of abuse. Statistics reveal that 51% of women in SA have experienced GBV, while 76% of men have perpetrated GBV at one stage in their lives. Another report by the United Nations in South Africa reveals that '140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, which means one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes'. A charity organisation in Yeoville, Johannesburg, has joined in the struggle to liberate women who are GBV survivors. Ndawo Yakho has been transforming the lives of GBV survivors for over three decades. With a vision of providing a home for women and their children who are victims of abuse, the shelter has moved from just being a home to a place of empowerment. Victims who come to the shelter are empowered with skills that enable them to be financially independent. In addition to acquiring skills, the women also receive professional counselling from a social worker.  It is also a place where the dignity of the victims is restored. "Every day, the dedicated team at Ndawo Yakho works tirelessly to create an environment where women find solace, strength, and a pathway to a brighter future," says Ndawo Yakho's centre manager Zandi Tshabalala. The 18-bed shelter accommodates women and their children for up to six months, providin

Is City of Joburg really selling its public parks? What you need to know

For many years, Johannesburg's wonderful parks have contributed to its appeal as a tourist destination. However, there have been panics recently after several social media posts said the City is planning to sell its cherished community spaces.West Park Cemetery, Botanical Gardens, and the Emerentia Dam were among the properties that were said to be up for sale. The good news is that residents and tourists can rest assured that the city will still manage the popular recreational spaces. Joburg Property Company General Manager Sizeka Tshabalala has denied claims that the city is selling its recreational parks and sports facilities. Speaking to Jacaranda FM, Tshabalala said: "There's been this misconception that JPC has plans to sell these properties for the development of low-cost housing. There is no truth in all those allegations." The manager said the big issue has been the lease contract agreements.  "We have looked at the number of these properties, which some have leases as old as 30 years," Tshabalala told Jacaranda FM. He told Jacaranda FM that the city's Killarney Golf Club lease agreement stipulates rental income of as little as R2, and for Marks Park, the city receives R49 per annum. "So if you look at all those terms of the agreement, you can see that that doesn't make any business sense. So it is incumbent on us as JPC to ensure that we look at and revise the terms of leases on these properties." Tshabalala has encouraged the public to keep visiting the recreationa
