The 7 best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg

Johannesburg might be known as the City of Gold, but it also shines in another way, with its gloriously dramatic summer storms. The weather here is generally kind all year round, never too hot or too cold, but between September and May, the Highveld comes alive with rolling thunder and sudden downpours. December is usually the wettest month, and this year, forecasters are predicting even wetter conditions stretching from spring into early summer. This isn’t your average drizzle either, Jozi’s subtropical climate and high altitude mean we see an unusually high number of lightning strikes (up to 20 flashes per square kilometre a year!), turning the sky into a light show on most summer afternoons. While it pays to be prepared - think checking the forecast, wearing proper shoes, packing a waterproof jacket, and driving carefully, sometimes the best move is to embrace it. Rainy days are a perfect excuse to slow down, switch gears, and explore a softer side of the city. So grab your umbrella and join us as we dive into the best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg, from cosy coffee spots and cultural hideaways to all-weather adventures worth braving the storm for.  RECOMMENDED 📍 The best things to do in Johannesburg🛏️ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏨 The best hotels in Johannesburg🍽 The best restaurants in Johannesburg🍺 The best pubs and bars in Johannesburg Follow Time Out Johannesburg on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram!

Vaal Villa

Vaal Villa

4 out of 5 stars
Time Out Says Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal Villa is an ideal getaway destination for large groups looking to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories. At the beginning of every year, my family makes it a tradition to set the tone for the year ahead by going on vacation together, prioritising bonding time and shared experiences. This January, we chose Vaal Villa in Vanderbijlpark, which offers seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. With a group of 11 adults and four children, I was slightly anxious about whether the property would truly cater to all our needs. From the moment we arrived, those concerns quickly disappeared. Why stay at Vaal Villa?   Large wooden gates secure the property and feature a striking, castle-like architectural design. While the exterior wall near the gate may not immediately impress and almost feels intentionally rustic or vintage, the inside of the property is nothing short of breathtaking. Once inside, you’re welcomed by well-maintained green lawns and neatly trimmed trees, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The gate entrance itself gives off an “old-money” aesthetic, which we absolutely loved. Stepping into the villa is an experience on its own. The interiors are elegant and stylish, blending luxury with a vintage farmhouse feel. The high ceilings and beautifully decorated entrance make for a perfect photo spot. The property has two storeys, with the ground floor featuring two large, fully equipped kitchens fitted with moder

Johannesburg boasts an impressive culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants and dining experiences that cater to every type of food enthusiast. Among these standout eateries is Mad Nomad, a restaurant that truly deserves the spotlight - not only for its exceptional food, but also for its warm service, prime location, inviting ambience, and unmistakable vibe. The Vibe  On 31 December, I was looking for a dining experience that would meaningfully close out 2025 and usher in the new year with beautiful memories. I also wanted to celebrate my birthday, making the occasion even more special. My search led me to Mall of Africa, one of the largest malls on the continent and a hub for diverse dining options. As I walked through the mall, Mad Nomad immediately caught my attention. Its exterior décor was elegant and inviting, quietly calling you in - and I’m glad I listened. From the moment I entered, I was blown away by the stunning interior and warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. Despite it being New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and enjoyable. Service was prompt, professional, and warm throughout. The Food  The menu was refreshingly easy to navigate and not overwhelming, which I loved. It offered a beautiful selection of Turkish-inspired dishes, including lskender kebab, salads, and soups. The eatery also serves African cuisine such as sheep head and pap. My family and I opted for the meat platter, which featured lamb, chicken, Adana kebab, fillet cubes, chi

The Maslow Time Square

4 out of 5 stars
When I first stepped into The Maslow Time Square, I was utterly blown away by the interior décor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Even before reaching reception, I was left impressed - as soon as I drove into the parking lot, the security guard already had my details from the booking, so there was no need to produce documents or dig through my luggage. At reception, I was warmly welcomed with a smile, and despite my late arrival, the staff made me feel completely at ease. The hotel itself is vast, and its scale alone impressed me. Another plus is its accessibility - even by public transport. Why stay at The Maslow Time Square Hotel? This hotel offers more than just luxury – it provides peace of mind and a homely feel. It provides a calm and relaxing environment. It is beautifully designed and boasts breathtaking city views. The service throughout my stay was excellent, with staff genuinely committed to making guests comfortable. It is also the ideal place to meet up with business associates or spoil yourself with a break. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Time Square Hotel? I slept in the median

Janu-worry blues? Why flea markets are the perfect escape

Janu-worry blues? Why flea markets are the perfect escape

Ke Janu-worry, boss! Budgets are tight.  It's no secret that South Africans go all out during the festive season - we host big family gatherings, party like there's no tomorrow, take vacations, eat, drink, and celebrate freely. But when January arrives, reality sets in.  Suddenly, we're faced with unavoidable expenses such as transport to work, school fees, stationery, and uniforms. The list feels endless - and on top of that, we still need to put food on the table. With fridges and cupboards running low, finding affordable food options becomes essential. This is where flea markets come in as one of the best ways to beat the January blues. Affordable prices Flea markets and farmers' markets often sell produce at much lower prices. Buying directly from vendors means better value for money, which makes a big difference during financially tight times.  Room to negotiate Unlike supermarkets, flea markets allow you to negotiate prices. Many sellers are open to bargaining. The personal interaction gives you a better chance of securing a great deal, especially if you have cash on hand.  Building relationships with vendors Regular visits allow you to form relationships with sellers. Over time, these connections can lead to better prices, added extras, and even skoloto (credit) where you can negotiate to pay month end because there's trust between buyer and seller. A sense of community Flea markets are social spaces where locals gather. They offer a chance to hear local stories, share

Road safety amid festive season exhaustion

Road safety amid festive season exhaustion

Hundreds of people lose their lives on South African roads during the festive season each year. A report by the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department recorded 18 road fatalities in the first week of December 2025 within the province alone. One of the leading causes of road accidents during this period remains drinking and driving. Between 15 December 2025 and 21 December 2025, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) reportedly arrested 227 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Road safety remains a major concern even in the first few days of the new year. From 2 January onwards, roads become increasingly busy as many people travel back to their homes or return to places of employment.  Johannesburg is not only a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world for its entertainment and sightseeing offerings, but it is also South Africa’s economic and financial hub. As a result, thousands of people continue to travel into and out of the city, increasing traffic volumes and the risk of accidents. Driving while fatigued can also contribute to mistakes on the road, or impair your judgment.  To help ensure a safe journey, motorists are encouraged to follow these road safety tips:  Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy. An unroadworthy vehicle not only puts your life at risk but also endangers other road users. Check your brakes, tyres, lights, and windscreen wipers before travelling. Local hero: Meet the woman redefining African haircare sustainably

The natural hair movement has been on the rise in recent years, with growing numbers of African people embracing their natural hair textures - the coils, kinks and curls that make their hair unique. What was once a source of shame has now become a symbol of pride, identity and self-love.  For many years, Africans were subjected to mockery and discrimination because of their hair texture. Certain schools even enforced policies that excluded hairstyles such as locs, braids and twists. Chemically straightened hair was widely upheld as the standard of beauty. However, thanks to trailblazers like Gauteng-based entrepreneur Noma Diko, Africans are reclaiming their crowns and redefining beauty on their own terms.  Noma proudly upholds the South African badge and has been recognised for her work on major platforms, including trading at the DStv Delicious Festival, where Brand SA selected her as an entrepreneur who represents local excellence and innovation. She also uses natural ingredients, proudly contributing to a safer environment.  Her journey into the natural hair space began with a personal struggle. She recalls battling to find products that truly catered to African hair. That frustration became the foundation of her business, Nomakade Natural Haircare. "I try to use natural ingredients because a lot of the time, what is offered to us on the market is not made by us, for us," she explains. "It's often other people who capitalise. So, in 2012, when I couldn't find what I neede

According to management, the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall that had affected the area.  "Initial assessments indicate that severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and hail over a short period, contributed to water build-up in box gutters. This resulted in water overflow and an isolated partial ceiling collapse. Importantly, there has been no damage to the roof structure itself, and the overall integrity of the building remains sound," management said in a statement posted on Facebook.  "Our facilit

From weddings and functions to festivals, concerts, outings, and city-wide celebrations, there are a lot of cool things happening this December, and as true Joburgers, we know how to make the most of it. However, while this is a season to be merry, it’s also a time when safety should be top of mind. Across South Africa, crime tends to escalate during the festive season, making it more critical than ever to celebrate responsibly. You can still party like a true Joburger, just make sure you do it safely. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe while having fun:  Verify the event  Before attending any event, make sure it’s legitimate. Don’t rely solely on posters or social media posts. Confirm that the event is registered and that safety protocols are in place. Recently, authorities warned against unregistered street bashes and events that do not comply with safety regulations. This follows tragic incidents at festivals, reminding us of the importance of vigilance. Always know where you’re going and ensure it’s a safe location.   Watch your belongings Joburg is known for its friendly vibe, and making new friends comes naturally. Still, this festive season, don’t trust strangers too easily. Be aware of who you allow into your space and keep your belongings close. Never leave valuables unattended; not everyone at the party is there for the right reasons.  Drink responsibly  Know your limits. If you plan on drinking
Thrills, laughter and family fun: Carnival City turns up the festive vibe

Thrills, laughter and family fun: Carnival City turns up the festive vibe

Carnival City has always been a popular entertainment destination, especially around this time of year. Whether you’re looking for activities for little ones, thrills for older kids, a relaxed spot to eat and be merry, drinks with friends, a weekend stay, or even casino and conference experiences, Carnival City has always been a vibe of its own. And this past weekend was no different.  On Saturday, my family and I visited Carnival City to check out their newly launched rides, and despite the rain, it felt like the sun was shining. The crowds came out in their numbers, proving once again that a bit of rain won’t stop Joburgers from having a good time. The buzz was even more exciting because of the official launch weekend of the new rides, which were announced at the beginning of December. The announcement had created a lot of excitement, and I was definitely one of those eagerly looking forward to the experience.  I attended with three kids: a two-year-old, an eight-year-old, and a ten-year-old. Let me tell you - this was entertainment on another level, for them and for me, of course! The new rides include the Ferris wheel, Rodeo, Crazy Beach Party, Twin Ranger, Bumper cars and Wild Mouse. The park also still offers its much-loved rides such as the Carousel, Mini Wheel, Cups, Palio, Free Fall, Balloon Ride, Skylab, Elephant Rides, Break Dancer and Wacky Worm.  Time OutWacky Worm fun ride at Carnival City Because of the rain, I was initially a bit sceptical about going on the

Sunday Society Graham Beck Picnic delivers the perfect holiday wind down

The festive season is in full swing, and Johannesburg is buzzing with exciting entertainment offerings.   On Tuesday, 16 December, Day of Reconciliation, I spent my holiday attending one of the most enjoyable and entertaining festive-season experiences right in the heart of Sandton, the Sunday Graham Beck Picnic, which was hosted at the elegant Sun Maslow Hotel. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was no ordinary picnic. The hotel itself looked absolutely breathtaking, dressed in beautiful Christmas décor complete with twinkling lights and a grand Christmas tree that immediately set the festive mood.  Time OutSun the Maslow hotel Christmas tree As I stepped into the picnic area, just outside the hotel, the setting became even more impressive. Comfortable seating had been thoughtfully arranged, and each spot was paired with a beautifully prepared basket filled with delicious treats, ensuring guests were never left without something to nibble on. With around 50 attendees, the picnic felt intimate yet lively, creating a warm and social atmosphere.  The weather played its part perfectly as well. It was a sunny Johannesburg day with just the right breeze, making it ideal for a laid-back outdoor gathering. Guests, especially the ladies, arrived dressed to impress in stunning, colour-block outfits, adding to the event's visual appeal and fashionable energy.  Time OutSunday Society Picnic - ladies wearing colour block One of the highlights of the picnic was the live
