Time Out says

Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom.

I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district.

Why stay at The Maslow Sandton

Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience.

Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too.

What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton?

The Maslow features 281 rooms spread across five floors. Some overlook the vibrant city streets, while others face the serene gardens and pool. The modern, streamlined aesthetic from the lobby carries through to the rooms, softened by Hugh Turvey’s floral x-ray artwork that adds warmth and a connection to nature, something I especially appreciated during our date-night stay.

Room types range from luxury twins and queens (with either bath or shower) to accessible rooms, junior suites, luxury suites with balconies, and executive suites. We stayed in a Luxury Queen Room with a balcony, which we only discovered the morning of checkout (cue devastation). The bathroom, while compact, featured both a bath and a shower,  the latter slightly reminiscent of a cruise ship cubicle, though the black tile and generous showerhead brought me firmly back to dry land.

The rooms are well-equipped with all the expected amenities, and the team can arrange a romantic turndown service if you request it in advance.

What is the restaurant like at The Maslow Sandton?

Stepping into Lacuna Bistro feels like entering an urban sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens onto manicured gardens and the pool, blurring the line between indoors and out. The menu blends Mediterranean-inspired dishes with South African flair.

During our stay, we tried the limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a five-course journey that delivered on both flavour and finesse. Dinner began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche and a creamy mussel hot pot with salsa verde and toasted ciabatta. A refreshing lemon sorbet with grilled pineapple and rum salsa reset the palate before the mains: surf & turf (tender beef fillet with tiger prawns, potato pavé, carrot purée, and garlic jus) and salmon teriyaki with bok choy, edamame, and mashed potato, possibly the best salmon I’ve had in a hotel restaurant.

Dessert was pure comfort: warm malva pudding with rooibos-infused custard and a baked milk tart with cinnamon-scented custard in crisp pastry. From start to finish, La Cuna impressed with confident flavours, refined presentation, and a thoughtful nod to local culinary heritage.

What is the service like at The Maslow Sandton?

Check-in at The Maslow is quick and efficient, exactly what you’d expect from a hotel geared toward business travellers. The reception sits to the left of the entrance, with the concierge on the right, making it easy to navigate.

We ended up putting the concierge to the test sooner than expected after both forgetting our phone chargers in the rush to get away. To our relief, both devices were fully charged and returned before bedtime. A minor booking hiccup at breakfast was resolved swiftly and professionally, reinforcing the team’s commitment to service.

A standout facility at The Maslow Sandton

One of my favourite features is The Wayfarer Lounge, a thoughtful perk for travellers in transit. Tucked beside Lacuna, just off the lobby, this sleek, complimentary space feels more like a business-class airport lounge than a hotel waiting area. It’s calm, contemporary, and equipped with everything you need to freshen up or catch up, high-speed Wi-Fi, charging stations, refreshments, comfortable seating, and even showers.

It’s a smart, sophisticated solution for early arrivals or late departures, and one of the clearest examples of The Maslow’s knack for anticipating what business travellers need most.

What’s the area like around The Maslow Sandton?

The Maslow is set in the Sandton Central Business District, South Africa’s undisputed financial heart. The area is modern, safe, and polished, with high-end retail, restaurants, and offices all within walking distance. Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are both close by, and the Gautrain station is just a short stroll away, making it easy to get around without a car during the day.

Why you should book a stay at The Maslow Sandton

If you’re a business traveller, The Maslow is a no-brainer. But couples looking for a convenient city escape might be pleasantly surprised, too. The hotel takes on a different energy after hours. Lacuna Bistro’s low lighting and live music create an intimate, almost romantic atmosphere.

We were surrounded by a mix of guests: not just executives wrapping up the week, but couples and groups enjoying a night out. All things considered, The Maslow Sandton might be considered a bit of an oldie,  but she’s still a goodie.
