The 14 best burgers in the world right now

Is there a more satisfying bite than the salty, smoky hit of a really, really good burger? The answer is obviously: of course not. Local Intel: Lucy Mahlangu

Local Intel: Lucy Mahlangu

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. As a breakout star of The Real City Makoti, Lucy Mahlangu has become a relatable icon for the modern woman, one who balances a grounded approach to marriage with a fierce sense of independence. For Lucy, being a "city makoti" isn't about compromise; it’s about proving you can be a hardworking professional while embracing your cultural roots with dignity. “It was important to showcase my type of marriage because most women in the cities find it hard to understand that there are different types of marriages, and either way, it can still work out,” she explains. “Showcasing that you can stay in the city and still embrace and practice culture or tradition with dignity and pride,” she adds. When she isn't navigating the complexities of tradition on screen, you’ll find her leaning into the "soft life," scouting out Johannesburg’s hidden spa gems or soaking up the energy of local markets. From the hustle of building a business to sipping signature cocktails at TANG, Lucy views Jozi as a land of pure opportunity. We caught up with her to talk Limpopo retreats, favourite coffee dates, and why she believes the secret to success is simple: "Stand your ground, set your boundaries, and define your own goals." Café Billibi

Café Billibi

5 out of 5 stars
Known for their wholesome, hearty breakfasts, CafĂ© Billibi has long been a favourite on the Johannesburg East dining scene. While their breakfast is definitely something to write home about, as in one of the best breakfast cafĂ©s in Johannesburg, their lunchtime offering has me thinking we need to reframe how we view this restaurant asap! The vibe I firmly believe that experience plays a large part in whether a restaurant is A-class, and when it comes to service, CafĂ© Billibi knocks it out of the park. Whether you visit their Stoneridge branch or the newer Bedford Crossing branch, you’re always met with a warm welcome. The staff are genuinely warm, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Exceptional service aside, CafĂ© Billibi feels like the restaurant version of the 80s sitcom “Cheers”. If you visit the Bedfordview Branch, you’ll see Chef Owner Clifford Correia greeting people in between his daily grind. The decor is inviting and warm, and while the restaurant is in the city, it feels like it could easily be a beachside bistro. The food The menu at CafĂ© Billibi feels like a love letter to Johannesburg’s cafĂ© culture; it’s polished yet approachable and health-conscious without being sanctimonious. It’s the kind of menu designed for long breakfasts that quietly turn into lunch, where capppucinos become rosĂ©-adjacent iced lattes and coffee somehow ends in pasta and cheesecake. The food offering itself sits in that sweet spot between comfort food and wellness theatre. On one
Marc's by Marc Jacobs

Marc's by Marc Jacobs

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside Hyde Park Corner, Marc’s CafĂ© by Marc Jacobs arrives with serious credentials: the first permanent cafĂ© of its kind globally, and a bold fusion of fashion, food, and design. Set within Maison Deux, this intimate 20-seater doesn’t just trade on the Marc Jacobs name; it leans fully into it, offering a dining experience that feels as curated as a runway collection. There’s an unmistakable sense that this is more than just a cafĂ©. It’s a brand world brought to life, with Johannesburg cast as an unlikely but fitting stage for a concept that blends New York energy with Parisian finesse. The Vibe The space is small but considered; the ambient lighting, tactile finishes, and signature Marc Jacobs motifs (like cute daisies and buttons) create a setting that’s equal parts polished and playful. It feels exclusive without being intimidating, the kind of place where you might stop in for coffee and end up lingering longer than planned (which we did). There’s a quiet luxury to the experience, but it’s softened by a sense of fun. Every detail, from plating to presentation, feels intentional, making it as much about the visual experience as it is about what’s on the plate. The Food The menu draws inspiration from New York cafĂ© culture with a French-leaning culinary approach, all tailored to local tastes. It’s thoughtful and layered, with dishes designed much like fashion pieces – built around texture, contrast, and composition. My favourite dish was undoubtedly the Hell’s Kitch
Mira

Mira

4 out of 5 stars
Located in the heart of Sandton, Mira opened its doors late last year after a mysterious social media build-up that had me wondering: would this restaurant live up to the hype? After stopping by twice since opening, I’m happy to report that the answer is yes. Set within the Sandton Sun precinct, Mira is a 200-seater Mozambican-Portuguese restaurant that feels both transportive and deeply rooted in Joburg’s love for quiet luxury. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you step inside, and in Sandton, that’s no small thing. The Vibe Mira is designed to flex with whatever the moment calls for. Corporate catch-ups, date nights, celebratory dinners and indulgent evenings out all feel equally at home here. Despite its size, the restaurant never feels vast; the layout creates a sense of sophistication and intimacy that’s carefully considered. Every detail contributes to the atmosphere. From the curated art and music to the lighting and textures, nothing feels accidental. There’s an undeniable sense of polish here, refined but not stiff, making Mira feel like a destination rather than just another new opening. The Food Mira’s menu draws inspiration from Mozambique and Portuguese home cooking. For starters, the Lulas Fritas (deep-fried squid heads served with Mira-made tartare) are indulgent and deeply satisfying. The Mussel Pot, served in a creamy garlic sauce and white wine, is rich yet light and perfect for sharing. I didn’t share mine, a choice I would later re
The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

5 out of 5 stars
In a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, The Greenhouse in Sandton stands out as a benchmark of luxury dining and sophisticated ambience. This venue, nestled within a stunning, plant-filled glasshouse, consistently delivers an atmosphere where high-end cuisine meets curated glamour. Earlier this year, this reputation for excellence was solidified with an exciting partnership with the celebrated Shortmarket Club. This collaboration merged Joburg style with Cape Town's flair. The result is a dining experience that feels both familiar and deeply exclusive. The Vibe Every Joburger knows the late-night glamour of The Greenhouse. The restaurant called itself “South Africa’s first authentic supper club”. In a way, it reimagined dining as a fully immersive, sensory experience. Sunset cocktails glide effortlessly into decadent dinners and, eventually, late-night dancing. However, the addition of a lunchtime service was the daring move we didn't know we needed. It was quiet when we visited, as lunch at the Greenhouse is still a new concept. Lunchtime services only launched in November. Still, the lush, plant-draped courtyard looks just as good when the sun hits it at midday. The Food Designed with lazy, lingering afternoons in mind, The Greenhouse's new lunch menu offers a brilliant range of options. Choices include light pick-me-ups to rich, deeply satisfying plates. The difficulty isn't finding something good; it's choosing just one. (No, really, I ordered two mains.) I k
Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea

The clash comes at a tough time for the Buccaneers, who’ll be fresh off their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie just a week earlier, but if there’s one thing Pirates fans know, it’s that pressure brings out their best. Magesi, meanwhile, won’t make it easy. As last year’s champions, they’re arriving confident and ready to defend their title. Kick-off is at 7 pm, with tickets available for R60.
The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Grab your voting paddles Joburg: The Market Theatre summons you for Jury duty

Joburg, you’ve been summoned for Jury duty! The historic John Kani Theatre at Newtown’s Market Theatre complex is breaking the fourth wall in its latest production, as the Jury Experience heads to town later this year. For the uninitiated, The Jury Experience is a legal drama lover's dream. The Joburg edition, dubbed Death by AI: Who Pays the Price? is an immersive courtroom drama that takes a looming ethical dilemma of the 21st century and drops it squarely in the audience's laps. Instead of sitting quietly in the dark, theatregoers are formally summoned for "jury duty" the moment they step into the auditorium. The case The case on trial feels uncomfortably close to a near-future reality: a fatal accident involving a driverless, autonomous vehicle. With a human life lost and zero legal roadmap or clear legal precedent to follow, the courtroom becomes an ethical storm. The audience's job is to step directly into the jury box, dissect witness testimonies, analyse the digital evidence, and ultimately determine who pays the price when technology turns fatal. This fast-paced, 65-minute production cuts out the standard theatrical distance and replaces it with live democracy. Armed with physical voting paddles and their own smartphones to scan interactive QR codes, the audience directly steers the legal trial's narrative trajectory. Every testimony from the witness stand must be picked apart, and every legal argument weighed. Because the performance relies entirely on real-time cro

An Idiot’s Guide to Wine is bringing stand-up and wine tastings to Mandela Square

If your idea of a wine tasting involves stiff rooms, intimidating jargon, and swirling a glass while pretending to smell "undertones of leather and fresh asphalt," it is time to throw out the rulebook. The globally acclaimed Australian comedy sensation, An Idiot’s Guide to Wine, has officially landed in Johannesburg. Taking over the iconic Hard Rock Cafe at Nelson Mandela Square, this unique 70-minute experience strips away the snobbery of the wine world and replaces it with unfiltered laughter and excellent pours. High comedy meets high-quality pours The concept is beautifully simple: a professional stand-up comedy show seamlessly paired with a curated tasting of six completely different wine varietals from around the globe. While the tone is strictly hilarious, the pedigree behind it is entirely legitimate. The show was written by Merrick Watts, famously known as the only comedian in the world to boast a WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) Level 3 qualification. That means you are learning real, foundational wine knowledge between punchlines, giving you just enough liquid courage and trivia to impress your friends at your next dinner party. According to the creators, the hardest part of the entire evening isn't mastering the tasting notes; it’s trying not to spill your glass while laughing. What you need to know before you go Whether you are looking for a unique date night, a night out with friends, or a solo adventure to meet fellow foodies and comedy fans, here is the es

I recently attended the launch, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. A transportive escape While many local entertainment venues rely on superficial "themed" decor, for me, what sets the Jade Lounge apart, besides being Africa's first dedicated Chinese luxury baccarat lounge, is its pure material authenticity. Stepping through the hand-crafted traditional moon gate entrance, you’re instantly met with a space that feels entirely separated from the buzz of the East Rand. Between the immersive koi pond floor projections, 3D wall sculptures, intricate bamboo ceilings, and traditional lattice screens, the atmosphere is utterly seamless. Backed by a curated soundtrack of traditional music and live cultural entertainment, the space's ambient theatre is so vivid that you could easily forget you are in Johannesburg altogether. Instead, it feels like you’re stepping into an exclusive, world-class boutique destination in Macau or Singapore. Authentic flavours a
Two major international theatre smash hits are heading to Joburg this winter

Two major international theatre smash hits are heading to Joburg this winter

Two of the world’s most talked-about contemporary plays are officially heading to Johannesburg stages this winter, bringing serious star power to Sandton and Newtown. First on the must-see list is Nick Payne’s West End smash Constellations, which takes over Sandton's Theatre On The Square from 23 June to 11 July. Directed by local industry legend and choreographer Jay Pather, this mind-bending romantic drama stars South African stage heavyweights Mark Elderkin and Mwenya Kabwe as a physicist and a beekeeper whose relationship fractures and reforms across parallel universes. It’s an intimate, beautifully choreographed exploration of quantum physics, choice, and cosmic heartbreak that local audiences won't want to miss. Prima Facie Later in the season, the focus shifts to Newtown as the iconic Market Theatre hosts the highly anticipated South African premiere of Prima Facie from 17 September to 4 October. Suzie Miller’s devastating legal thriller, which absolutely dominated the Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards in London and New York, will be brought to life by celebrated director Neil Coppen and stars Danica De La Rey Jones. Jones takes on the powerhouse role of Tessa, a brilliant defence barrister who expertly manipulates the legal system until a brutal assault forces her to face the brutal reality of cross-examination from the witness stand. Given its sharp critique of how the law treats victims of sexual violence, Coppen aims for the production to spark urgent, necessary con

New Zealand soul sensation TEEKS to headline Parklive Jozi 2026

Johannesburg, get ready to have your heartstrings thoroughly pulled. Parklive Festival has officially announced its first massive headliner for 2026, and it’s none other than the Māori soul icon, TEEKS. The velvet-voiced singer-songwriter will be taking over the stage at Marks Park in Emmarentia on Sunday, 30 August 2026. Known globally for his achingly beautiful, emotionally raw ballads like First Time, Without You, and Remember Me, TEEKS has built a massive cult following in South Africa. This performance wraps up his first-ever multi-city tour of the country, making his Jozi stop the grand finale of what promises to be one of the standout international tours of the year. Who is TEEKS? If you haven’t yet been introduced to the cinematic soul of TEEKS (born Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi), prepare to meet your new musical obsession. Hailing from Aotearoa, New Zealand, this Māori singer-songwriter has been dominating the global soul scene since his debut. Often described by critics as the "male Adele" or a modern-day Otis Redding, TEEKS possesses a rich, velvety baritone that carries an ancient, emotional weight, something Gen Z is leaning into these days. He exploded onto the scene with his 2017 debut EP, The Grapefruit Skies, written entirely in his bedroom, instantly marking him as one of the southern hemisphere's most compelling new voices. His 2021 debut studio album, Something To Feel, debuted at number one on the New Zealand charts and cleaned up at the Aotearoa Music Award

If you are a young designer ready to scale your business and see your work featured in restaurants from Rosebank to London, it’s time to get sketching. The challenge: Light up the room For the 2026 edition, Nando's is focusing on illumination. Entrants are being challenged to design a striking, functional linear light that could hang above a long table or counter in any Nando’s restaurant worldwide. Here is what the judges are looking for: The look: Unique combinations of materials, texture, and colour. Sculptural or crafted elements are highly encouraged. The collab: Concepts that incorporate handmade details created in collaboration with local crafters will score major points. The logistics: It’s not just about aesthetics; longevity, transportability, and installation are vital. The final piece must be no longer than 1.4 meters and weigh under 28kg. The Joburg Skate Academy rewriting the rules of action sports

The Joburg Skate Academy rewriting the rules of action sports

A cracked tennis court in Ferndale has become one of South Africa’s most unlikely sporting success stories. The Skate School Academy, a grassroots skateboarding academy founded by photojournalist Shayne Robinson, has produced three 2025 South African national champions while training on a damaged and weathered court in Randburg. Now the community behind the academy is rallying to help the school build something bigger. The academy recently launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign to raise R27,000 for a crane truck to move key skate infrastructure onto the property. The goal was fully funded in just five hours. The campaign remains open, with the team now aiming to raise an additional R15,000 to complete a mini ramp ahead of its open day on 30 May, exactly six years since the school first began. Robinson, a World Press Photo award-winning photojournalist who spent two decades documenting conflict zones across Libya, Haiti and the Middle East, started the school during lockdown in 2020 while teaching his daughter, Auralia, to skateboard on the same cracked court. Today, students affectionately call him “Gramps”, and Auralia has become one of the country’s top young competitors. Champions from a cracked court Despite limited facilities, The Skate School delivered standout results at the 2025 South African National Championships, earning three national titles and seven podium finishes. The champions include Ayanda Ndlovu, who won the U16 Boys division; Izzy Stewart, champion i
Groove fatigue: Why Gen Z is reclaiming Johannesburg’s live jazz scene

Groove fatigue: Why Gen Z is reclaiming Johannesburg’s live jazz scene

For years, the conventional wisdom surrounding Johannesburg’s live music landscape was simple: if you wanted to capture the attention of the city’s youth, you needed a massive sound system, a heavy bassline, and a stadium-sized Amapiano groove. But a quiet, sophisticated counter-revolution is taking over the city's nightlife. From the leafy avenues of Melville to the industrial-chic alleyways of Milpark, a new wave of intimate, deeply focused spaces is popping up. The music of choice is live, acoustic, complex, and deeply rooted in South African heritage. Live jazz is steadily reclaiming space in Johannesburg’s cultural life. But this is not a return to the traditional jazz club culture of decades past. This jazz revolution is being driven by an unexpected demographic: Gen Z. Across the city, a growing number of jazz-focused venues and events are drawing crowds of students, creatives and young professionals seeking alternatives to mainstream nightlife. According to Music in Africa, Spotify data released earlier this year showed South African jazz listenership grew by 20% year-on-year, with local users generating nearly 175 million jazz streams. The number of South African listeners saving jazz tracks reportedly rose from 167,000 in 2021 to more than one million in 2025. The figures suggest that while jazz may still be viewed as niche, interest in the genre is growing online, particularly among younger listeners already immersed in jazz-influenced genres such as amapiano. Things to know before Boyz II Men perform in Pretoria this weekend

Things to know before Boyz II Men perform in Pretoria this weekend

If your idea of a perfect throwback involves dramatic harmonies, slow jams and pretending you didn’t once dedicate On Bended Knee to someone who absolutely did not deserve it, then clear your weekend plans. R&B legends Boyz II Men are heading to Pretoria for two nights only this weekend, bringing a healthy dose of nostalgia with them. Here’s what to know before you go. Prepare for peak millennial nostalgia For many of us, Boyz II Men were the soundtrack to school dances, heartbreak, weddings, family braais and those late-night music channel marathons that somehow always ended with End of the Road. The group remains one of the most successful vocal acts of all time, selling more than 60 million records worldwide and spending a combined 50 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. And when you look at the catalogue, it makes perfect sense. We’re talking I’ll Make Love to You, Water Runs Dry, One Sweet Day, On Bended Knee and A Song for Mama (a Mother's Day classic), songs that still somehow know how to hit you directly in the chest. There are only two shows Boyz II Men perform on Friday, May 29, 2026 and Saturday, May 30, 2026, at SunBet Arena at Time Square in Menlyn. Doors open at 6pm, which means if you’re planning on doing dinner beforehand, you’ll want to keep a close eye on the time. Pretoria traffic, like Joburg, waits for absolutely nobody. If you still need tickets, don’t take your time In case you’ve somehow missed the collective excitement around this tour
