The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.  On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity f

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. Johannesburg has always been a city of reinvention, and few people capture its evolving energy quite like award-winning radio personality and sex educator Leah Jazz. As a voice that resonates through the city’s airwaves and creative hubs, Leah’s perspective on Joburg is as vibrant and unapologetic as the streets she calls home. In this week’s feature, we dive into what makes the City of Gold shine for her right now. From the thriving, boundary-pushing energy of the queer community, led by the likes of the Johannesburg Queer Chorus and the electric VNJ parties, to the leafy, walkable charm of Parkhurst, Leah paints a picture of a city that is as much about intimate neighbourhood rituals as it is about high-octane nightlife. Whether she’s fuelling up with a crispy potato breakfast at Cnr Cafe or losing herself on the dancefloor at Club AM, Leah’s version of the good life is a love letter to Joburg’s grit, glamour, and greenery. In the world of South African reality TV, few figures manage to balance the spotlight with as much grace and groundedness as Keneilwe Mpolokeng Mbobosi. "The most inspiring thing about Joburg right now," she says, "is that it is evolving and being recognised as a creative capital where artists and creatives are redefining culture in their own terms." Whether she’s hunting for custom local designs or enjoying a quiet family day in the parks, Keneilwe’s version of "the good life" is as curated as it is authentic. Marc's by Marc Jacobs

Marc's by Marc Jacobs

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside Hyde Park Corner, Marc’s CafĂ© by Marc Jacobs arrives with serious credentials: the first permanent cafĂ© of its kind globally, and a bold fusion of fashion, food, and design. Set within Maison Deux, this intimate 20-seater doesn’t just trade on the Marc Jacobs name; it leans fully into it, offering a dining experience that feels as curated as a runway collection. There’s an unmistakable sense that this is more than just a cafĂ©. It’s a brand world brought to life, with Johannesburg cast as an unlikely but fitting stage for a concept that blends New York energy with Parisian finesse. The Vibe The space is small but considered; the ambient lighting, tactile finishes, and signature Marc Jacobs motifs (like cute daisies and buttons) create a setting that’s equal parts polished and playful. It feels exclusive without being intimidating, the kind of place where you might stop in for coffee and end up lingering longer than planned (which we did). There’s a quiet luxury to the experience, but it’s softened by a sense of fun. Every detail, from plating to presentation, feels intentional, making it as much about the visual experience as it is about what’s on the plate. The Food The menu draws inspiration from New York cafĂ© culture with a French-leaning culinary approach, all tailored to local tastes. It’s thoughtful and layered, with dishes designed much like fashion pieces – built around texture, contrast, and composition. My favourite dish was undoubtedly the Hell’s Kitch
Mira

Mira

4 out of 5 stars
Located in the heart of Sandton, Mira opened its doors late last year after a mysterious social media build-up that had me wondering: would this restaurant live up to the hype? After stopping by twice since opening, I’m happy to report that the answer is yes. Set within the Sandton Sun precinct, Mira is a 200-seater Mozambican-Portuguese restaurant that feels both transportive and deeply rooted in Joburg’s love for quiet luxury. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you step inside, and in Sandton, that’s no small thing. The Vibe Mira is designed to flex with whatever the moment calls for. Corporate catch-ups, date nights, celebratory dinners and indulgent evenings out all feel equally at home here. Despite its size, the restaurant never feels vast; the layout creates a sense of sophistication and intimacy that’s carefully considered. Every detail contributes to the atmosphere. From the curated art and music to the lighting and textures, nothing feels accidental. There’s an undeniable sense of polish here, refined but not stiff, making Mira feel like a destination rather than just another new opening. The Food Mira’s menu draws inspiration from Mozambique and Portuguese home cooking. For starters, the Lulas Fritas (deep-fried squid heads served with Mira-made tartare) are indulgent and deeply satisfying. The Mussel Pot, served in a creamy garlic sauce and white wine, is rich yet light and perfect for sharing. I didn’t share mine, a choice I would later re
The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

5 out of 5 stars
In a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, The Greenhouse in Sandton stands out as a benchmark of luxury dining and sophisticated ambience. This venue, nestled within a stunning, plant-filled glasshouse, consistently delivers an atmosphere where high-end cuisine meets curated glamour. Earlier this year, this reputation for excellence was solidified with an exciting partnership with the celebrated Shortmarket Club. This collaboration merged Joburg style with Cape Town's flair. The result is a dining experience that feels both familiar and deeply exclusive. The Vibe Every Joburger knows the late-night glamour of The Greenhouse. The restaurant called itself “South Africa’s first authentic supper club”. In a way, it reimagined dining as a fully immersive, sensory experience. Sunset cocktails glide effortlessly into decadent dinners and, eventually, late-night dancing. However, the addition of a lunchtime service was the daring move we didn't know we needed. It was quiet when we visited, as lunch at the Greenhouse is still a new concept. Lunchtime services only launched in November. Still, the lush, plant-draped courtyard looks just as good when the sun hits it at midday. The Food Designed with lazy, lingering afternoons in mind, The Greenhouse's new lunch menu offers a brilliant range of options. Choices include light pick-me-ups to rich, deeply satisfying plates. The difficulty isn't finding something good; it's choosing just one. (No, really, I ordered two mains.) I k
Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea

The clash comes at a tough time for the Buccaneers, who’ll be fresh off their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie just a week earlier, but if there’s one thing Pirates fans know, it’s that pressure brings out their best. Magesi, meanwhile, won’t make it easy. As last year’s champions, they’re arriving confident and ready to defend their title. Kick-off is at 7 pm, with tickets available for R60.
The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

A decade of style: How Mall of Africa is marking 10 years in Waterfall City

It’s hard to believe it’s been a full decade since that giant, undulating roof first rose out of the Midrand veld. Since 2016, Mall of Africa hasn’t just been a place to burn a hole in your credit card; it’s become the literal heart of Waterfall City and a massive touchstone for Jozi culture. This April, the "Coolest Mall" (an actual title they’ve held for years, by the way) is turning 10, and they aren’t just blowing out candles. They’re hosting a massive cultural takeover that’s actually worth the drive up the N1. The interactive masterpiece Forget static displays. From 24 April, the Crystal Court will be taken over by a massive, interactive thread-based installation. Think of it as a giant, living tapestry. Stores across the mall are contributing coloured threads that represent fashion, food, and film, but the cool part is that you get to weave yourself into the story. Shoppers are invited to add to the artwork in person, turning a retail space into a collaborative gallery. The big birthday bash (Save the date!) If you’re going to pick one day to visit, make it Tuesday, 28 April. Live vibes: South African legends Mi Casa will perform, bringing soulful house beats to the concourse. Early-bird perks: The first 500 people through the doors will snag curated goody bags. Meet and greets: Keep an eye on their socials; five lucky fans will get a chance to meet Mi Casa in the flesh. Peter Pan Jr. is coming to Joburg this winter

Dust off your fairy dust and think happy thoughts! Peoples Theatre has officially announced its mid-year headliner, and it’s a big one. For the first time in over a decade, the boy who wouldn’t grow up is returning to the Braamfontein stage in a brand-new production of Peter Pan Jr. Running from 9 June to 26 July 2026, this isn’t just any revival. Director Jill Girard is bringing the updated Broadway version of the J.M. Barrie classic to South African audiences for the first time, promising a fresh, high-flying experience for a new generation. Why we’re excited While Peter Pan first flew onto the scene in 1904, its themes of eternal youth and escapism feel more relevant than ever (especially after watching Michael last night and seeing how deeply this story resonated with the King of Pop). This production leans into the immersive, participatory magic for which Peoples Theatre is famous. According to Jill, we can expect a polished, fast-paced script that keeps even the youngest viewers glued to their seats, plus a visual spectacle. With set design by Grant Knottenbelt and costumes by Luciano Zuppa, Neverland is set to look more vibrant than ever. “We haven’t staged Peter Pan at Peoples Theatre for over a decade,” says director Jill Girard. “It’s a wonderful ‘first’ for not only the youngsters who come watch, but their parents too.” Plan your visit Whether you’re looking for a school holiday outing or a weekend treat, here is everything you need to know to secure your spot in N
The King of Pop meets the king of screens in Joburg

The King of Pop meets the king of screens in Joburg

Streaming may have been our lockdown lifeline, but if last night’s premiere at The Zone @ Rosebank proved anything, it’s that the magic of the big screen is unmatched. For a while, we tried to convince ourselves that a 55-inch OLED and a soundbar were good enough, but last night, sitting in the heart of Rosebank, I realised how wrong we were. I was at the launch of the brand-new IMAX with Laser cinema, now officially the largest screen in Gauteng, for a preview screening of the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, MICHAEL. And if this experience was any indication, the return to the cinema is long overdue. A sensory experience If you’re going to watch a story about the greatest entertainer of all time, you don't want to watch it on a screen that feels like an afterthought. The IMAX with Laser is a beast. The visuals are startlingly sharp, but it’s the sound that really recalibrates your senses. During the performance sequences, the audio didn't just fill the room; it reverberated through the floor. Stepping out of the cinema, I still had Bad ringing in my ears, an effect that would last until I got into bed. Actually, I think I can still hear it right now. In the spirit of you get what you get, and you don't get upset, I ended up on the side near the front, but even from this vantage point, the scale was impressive. For the best experience, you must book in the centre row. Trust me on this. The man in the mirror As for the film itself? MICHAEL is, in a word, epic. It’s

Mastering the hustle at the Millionaire Mind Intensive

Mastering the hustle at the Millionaire Mind Intensive

In the city where everyone comes to make money, the real question is: do you know how to keep it? This April, a global financial phenomenon lands in Modderfontein to help Joburgers rewire their relationship with wealth. Johannesburg has always been a city of high stakes and higher dreams. As the powerhouse of the South African economy, contributing roughly 16% of the national GDP, it remains the ultimate destination for those looking to "make it." We are a city of migrants and strivers, drawn here by the historic promise of the City of Gold. But as any local will tell you, making money in Jozi is only half the battle. In a landscape defined by extreme economic contrasts and the relentless pressure of the hustle, managing that wealth is what separates those who thrive from those who simply survive. Why your money blueprint matters This April, the Millionaire Mind Intensive (MMI) arrives at Focus Rooms in Modderfontein to address the psychology behind our bank accounts. Based on T. Harv Eker’s Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, the three-day seminar suggests that we all have a "subconscious money blueprint" that determines our financial success more than any business degree or stock tip ever could. For Joburgers, this is a vital conversation. In a city where the lifestyle can often outpace the income, learning to dismantle limiting beliefs is the ultimate urban survival skill. The Three-Day Breakdown Day 1: The Internal Audit. Identify the invisible habits holding you back. In a

Lower Sabie fire: Ranger teams contain blaze at popular Kruger Camp

Just as Joburgers are starting to pack their khakis and cooler boxes for the upcoming long weekends, a bit of a scare hit one of the city's favourite bushveld escapes. Early this morning, a fire broke out at the iconic Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. While the news might dampen the mood for those counting down the days until the Freedom Day (April 27) and Workers' Day (May 1) break, there is some good news: the situation is under control. Ranger teams spring into action The blaze reportedly started in the early hours of Tuesday, specifically affecting the camp’s shop and restaurant area. Given how dry the Lowveld can get, things could have gone south very quickly. However, the Kruger’s ranger teams and staff reacted with impressive speed, containing the fire before it could reach any of the guest accommodation units. SANParks has confirmed that safety remains the absolute priority in the wake of the blaze, with the encouraging news that no staff or guests were harmed. While the investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, the restaurant and reception areas have been cordoned off and remain strictly inaccessible while teams conduct essential structural safety assessments. The damage, while significant to the main hub, was limited thanks to the rapid intervention of the park’s frontline teams; as SANParks Head of Communications JP Louw confirmed, the ranger team and on-site staff reacted with incredible speed to contain the flames before th
The trio turning Jozi ‘Gnarly’... one record at a time

The trio turning Jozi ‘Gnarly’... one record at a time

In a world of digital playlists, Gnarly Vinyls is proving that the ceremony of the needle and the thrill of the dig are far from dead. I sat down with the Kempton Park team behind the city’s roaming record store to talk soul, hyper-pop sparks, and why the future of Jozi’s music scene is tactile. Vinyl revival In the heart of the local market scene, there is a specific sensory experience that Spotify can't replicate: the texture of a sleeve, the scent of history in the air, and the slight crackle as a record is eased free. This is the world of Gnarly Vinyl Records Shop, a business that began just six months ago in October. Run by a trio with distinct personalities - a soulful curator, a detail-driven organiser, and an adventurous crate-digger, they are united by a deep passion for the vinyl revival. The K-pop spark You’d think the name "Gnarly Vinyls" was inspired by the surf, but it wasn’t; it was actually sparked by the infectious vibe of a track from a girl group known for their experimental, hyper-pop style. This K-pop influence reflects the team's appreciation for vibrant, unapologetically unique music. "That shared experience perfectly sums up our ethos," explains co-founder Quintin Beling. "Embracing a wide range of sounds and injecting fresh, dynamic energy into the vinyl scene”, he continues. The roaming revolution While they maintain an online store, the team believes people want to feel the weight of the sleeve and chat with fellow enthusiasts rather than waiting da
Cape roots, city heights: Babylonstoren brings the farm to The Westcliff

Cape roots, city heights: Babylonstoren brings the farm to The Westcliff

If you’ve ever found yourself wandering through the labyrinthine gardens of Babylonstoren in the Cape, you know their philosophy is simple: the garden dictates the kitchen. Now, for the first time, that philosophy is travelling north. The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff has revealed a series of four seasonal dinners, one for every turn of the calendar, designed to bring the botanical diversity and world-class cellar of the Simonsberg foothills to Johannesburg’s most famous ridge. The Autumn Harvest: April 22 The series kicks off this Wednesday, 22 April 2026, with a menu centred around the Season of the Olive. Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg has collaborated with Babylonstoren’s team to craft a menu where every course is threaded with the farm’s harvest. Expect a masterclass in seasonal honesty, starting with oysters drizzled in Coratina extra virgin olive oil and paired with the farm’s celebrated Sprankel Cap Classique. The Menu Highlights include Trout Mi Cuit and Ricotta Agnolotti, featuring Babylonstoren’s sun-dried tomato and olive crumb, and Fire-Roasted Beef Rump, served with a decadent beef cheek and truffle bone marrow pithivier. A year in the vines This isn’t just a one-off pop-up. Cellar Master Klaas Stoffberg will be hand-selecting pours from the farm’s 14 grape varieties to match the shifting seasons. If you can’t make the autumn debut, mark your calendars for the rest of the year: Winter: 25 June 2026 Spring: 23 September 2026 Summer: 3 December 2026 The detai

Why INDEX 2026 is the most exciting addition to Jozi’s art calendar

Why INDEX 2026 is the most exciting addition to Jozi’s art calendar

The Johannesburg art scene has always had a bit of a "velvet rope" problem; if you weren't backed by a major gallery, getting your work onto a prestigious fair floor was a Herculean task. But for 2026, the RMB Latitudes Art Fair is doubling down on its mission to smash that glass ceiling. In a major move for the local creative economy, RMB Latitudes has joined forces with the National Arts Council (NAC) to supercharge INDEX 2026, a dedicated platform designed specifically for independent and emerging artists. Why this matters Typically, art fairs are the playground of established galleries. If you're an independent artist, you’re often looking in from the outside. INDEX flips the script. By partnering with the NAC, the fair is bridging the gap between public funding and the cutthroat commercial market. "It’s about making sure artists aren’t just 'supported' with a grant, but are actually integrated into the professional ecosystems that pay the bills," the fair organisers noted. And it works. INDEX has already proven to be a massive launchpad, with previous alumni successfully parlaying their showcase into permanent gallery representation. What to expect at the 2026 fair Visitors to the 2026 edition of RMB Latitudes can expect a more diverse, unfiltered look at contemporary African art. Here’s the breakdown: A hybrid curation: The exhibition will feature a mix of artists hand-picked by the Latitudes team and those selected through an official NAC open call. Continental reach:
