Local Intel: Chanley Wong

Local Intel: Chanley Wong

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. In a city that moves as fast as Johannesburg, keeping up is an art form. For creator Chanley Wong, the magic lies in the city’s refusal to stand still. “As a creator, Joburg is constantly evolving and surprising us,” Chanley says. “Whether it’s a music festival, run clubs, coffee raves, a rooftop sundowner, or a local chef’s new menu, the city never feels static, and that energy is contagious and inspiring.” But beyond the events and the skylines, Chanley finds her spark in the grit and heart of the streets. To her, Joburg feels alive because of its people: “There’s an authenticity and resilience that makes the city feel like a place where anything can happen.” If you’re looking for a fresh way to spend your weekend, whether that’s a guided skate tour through Maboneng or a wholesome night out in Sandton, take a page out of Chanley’s playbook.  MORE CELEBS SHARE THEIR LOCAL SECRETS Jacaranda FM's DJ Ankletap shares his ultimate guide to the City of Gold J'Something on his Jozi Favourites J Ross on his local gems that make Johannesburg special Jonathan Boynton-Lee on his favourite ways to soak up Joburg's charm Wayne Boucher on his Joburg hit list
The 8 best outdoor restaurants in Johannesburg

The 8 best outdoor restaurants in Johannesburg

There's something about eating outdoors that transforms a meal into an occasion. Truly, there's eating
and then there's eating outdoors. And though no self-respecting South African would ever turn down a good braai, there’s also something to be said about an outdoor meal which doesn’t feature a boerie roll. Al fresco dining – essentially eating outside – may have European origins, but Joburg's climate makes it feel purpose-built for long lunches on terraces and dinners under oak trees. Summer here begs for meals where the setting matters as much as what's on your plate. These Johannesburg restaurants have perfected the art of al fresco dining. Mira

Mira

4 out of 5 stars
Located in the heart of Sandton, Mira opened its doors late last year after a mysterious social media build-up that had me wondering: would this restaurant live up to the hype? After stopping by twice since opening, I’m happy to report that the answer is yes. Set within the Sandton Sun precinct, Mira is a 200-seater Mozambican-Portuguese restaurant that feels both transportive and deeply rooted in Joburg’s love for quiet luxury. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you step inside, and in Sandton, that’s no small thing. The Vibe Mira is designed to flex with whatever the moment calls for. Corporate catch-ups, date nights, celebratory dinners and indulgent evenings out all feel equally at home here. Despite its size, the restaurant never feels vast; the layout creates a sense of sophistication and intimacy that’s carefully considered. Every detail contributes to the atmosphere. From the curated art and music to the lighting and textures, nothing feels accidental. There’s an undeniable sense of polish here, refined but not stiff, making Mira feel like a destination rather than just another new opening. The Food Mira’s menu draws inspiration from Mozambique and Portuguese home cooking. For starters, the Lulas Fritas (deep-fried squid heads served with Mira-made tartare) are indulgent and deeply satisfying. The Mussel Pot, served in a creamy garlic sauce and white wine, is rich yet light and perfect for sharing. I didn’t share mine, a choice I would later re
The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

5 out of 5 stars
In a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, The Greenhouse in Sandton stands out as a benchmark of luxury dining and sophisticated ambience. This venue, nestled within a stunning, plant-filled glasshouse, consistently delivers an atmosphere where high-end cuisine meets curated glamour. Earlier this year, this reputation for excellence was solidified with an exciting partnership with the celebrated Shortmarket Club. This collaboration merged Joburg style with Cape Town's flair. The result is a dining experience that feels both familiar and deeply exclusive. The Vibe Every Joburger knows the late-night glamour of The Greenhouse. The restaurant called itself “South Africa’s first authentic supper club”. In a way, it reimagined dining as a fully immersive, sensory experience. Sunset cocktails glide effortlessly into decadent dinners and, eventually, late-night dancing. However, the addition of a lunchtime service was the daring move we didn't know we needed. It was quiet when we visited, as lunch at the Greenhouse is still a new concept. Lunchtime services only launched in November. Still, the lush, plant-draped courtyard looks just as good when the sun hits it at midday. The Food Designed with lazy, lingering afternoons in mind, The Greenhouse's new lunch menu offers a brilliant range of options. Choices include light pick-me-ups to rich, deeply satisfying plates. The difficulty isn't finding something good; it's choosing just one. (No, really, I ordered two mains.) I k
Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea

The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Jozi’s student hub shaken: Building collapse in Doornfontein

While we usually celebrate the East Side for its hidden gems and urban energy, today our thoughts are with the students and workers in Doornfontein. Following a minor explosion and fire, a section of a student building has collapsed, leaving four injured. The incident occurred early Monday morning at a building located near the intersection of Lower Railway Road and Staib Street, a busy node for Johannesburg’s student and commuter population. According to eNCA reports, the collapse was triggered by a fire in a transformer room, which led to a minor explosion and the subsequent failure of an adjoining boundary wall. The Details: What we know so far Witnesses and residents reported a loud "explosion-like" sound followed by smoke billowing from the structure shortly before 06:00 AM. Speaking to SABC News, Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that the fire broke out in a section of the building housing an electrical box. Casualties: Four people have been confirmed injured and were transported to nearby hospitals by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) paramedics. According to eNCA, the victims include three people who were working in the vicinity and one student resident. The Rescue Operation: While all residents were accounted for shortly after the collapse, EMS teams remained on-site throughout the afternoon to clear rubble and ensure no one was trapped beneath the debris. The Cause: Investigations are ongoing. EMS spokesperson

Brakpan Chronicles documentary digs into one of Joburg’s most talked-about towns

Brakpan Chronicles documentary digs into one of Joburg’s most talked-about towns

Brakpan has spent years as South Africa’s favourite punchline, the setting for memes, jokes, and viral “what did I just watch?” videos. It’s shorthand for anything considered loud, rough or vaguely unhinged. But what happens when a place that lives mostly online gets the documentary treatment? That’s the question at the heart of Brakpan Chronicles, a new two-part documentary series landing on Showmax on Friday, 20 February 2026. The trailer, released this week, makes it clear this isn’t a tidy redemption arc or a tourism ad, but a raw, often uncomfortable look at a town most people think they already understand. Created by Rian van Heerden and Provoco, the team behind Sex in Afrikaans and Tiek Tok Boem!, the series sets out to strip Brakpan back to its bones, beyond the memes and mockery, and ask whether anything we “know” about the place is actually true. “Brakpan’s become a punchline, so we wanted to share the full story, or get bliksemed trying,” says van Heerden. The documentary moves between Brakpan’s legendary landmarks, including Carnival City, The Rock Raceway, Maskell’s Hotel, Thirsty Okes, Rosetulee, and Ziggy T’s Roadhouse, and the people who give the town its reputation, for better or worse. Among them is Ratkas, the pawn shop owner who went viral on TikTok for funnelling a one-litre bottle of Richelieu brandy; Terence “Supra” Labuschagne, a one-legged slapfighter; female bouncers Hester Croucamp and Lina Stoltz; and former cop Jan “Stolla” Stols, who recalls the

Brixton swimming pool gets a long-overdue refresh

Johannesburg, like the rest of the country, feels as though it’s been left in the oven, and as the city pushes through another stretch of intense summer heat, one of its legendary public swimming spots is quietly being prepared for a comeback. The historic Brixton Swimming Pool, first built in 1938, is currently undergoing a careful renovation led by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA). The upgrades aim to restore and modernise the facility while preserving its heritage, ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come. Long regarded as a cornerstone of Brixton life, the pool has hosted decades of childhood swim lessons, school outings and neighbourhood gatherings. According to the JDA, the current refurbishment is being carried out in line with heritage preservation guidelines, balancing necessary improvements with respect for the site’s original character. In a recent social media update, the agency shared a behind-the-scenes look at the renovations, describing the pool as a “cherished community asset” and emphasising the importance of protecting its legacy while improving the experience for today’s users. While no reopening date has been announced yet, the timing of the upgrade feels especially relevant. With the city in peak summer sun mode, access to well-maintained public swimming pools has become more important than ever, particularly in neighbourhoods where affordable ways to cool off are limited. Once complete, the renewed Brixton Swimming P

Why The Real City Makoti might be Joburg’s most relatable reality show yet

After attending the premiere of The Real City Makoti last night, one thing is immediately clear: this is not another glossy, overproduced reality show built around excess and spectacle. Instead, it’s a refreshingly honest look at what it really means to be a makoti in modern-day Johannesburg. The new reality series follows five women as they navigate married life in the city, balancing careers, relationships, personal identity and the cultural expectations that come with being a makoti. Set against the fast-paced backdrop of Joburg, the show, created by Ray Content Hub, explores the complex intersection of tradition and contemporary urban living. What sets The Real City Makoti apart is its groundedness. Unlike franchises such as The Real Housewives, where luxury, status and drama are front and centre, to me this series feels far more intimate and relatable. The women’s stories aren’t driven by displays of wealth or manufactured conflict, but by real-life pressures many South African women will recognise: managing family expectations, finding balance in marriage, and holding onto a sense of self while honouring culture. Speaking at the premiere, social media star Anika Dambuza said she joined the cast to represent and show people how she navigates life in an interracial, intercultural marriage. “To me, our relationship is normal, but what we’ve realised over the years is that it's still shocking for some people. So for the sake of learning, I think it was important for me to c

UB40 featuring Ali Campbell announce second Pretoria show

Reggae royalty UB40, featuring Ali Campbell, is officially extending its South African run, with organisers confirming an additional Pretoria performance following overwhelming demand for the original show. The Birmingham-born band will now perform at SunBet Arena, Time Square on Sunday, 7 June 2026 at 7 pm, after tickets for the Saturday, 6 June 2026 concert sold out. Both shows form part of a Big Concerts Experience, in association with KFM 94.5 and Hot 102.7. Fronted by Campbell’s unmistakable vocals, UB40 remains one of the most successful reggae acts of all time, known for blending reggae, dub and pop into a sound that helped bring the genre into the mainstream. Fans can expect a hit-packed live set featuring classics like Red Red Wine, Kingston Town and Can’t Help Falling in Love, the kind of songs designed for mass sing-alongs. Originally formed in 1978 by a group of friends from diverse ethnic backgrounds, the band became known early on for its socially conscious lyrics and laid-back reggae rhythms. With Campbell leading the way, UB40 went on to sell more than 100 million records worldwide, taking reggae from Birmingham to international stages. Reflecting on the band’s journey, Campbell said: “When I first founded UB40 back in 1978, I put everything I had into it – including the compensation money I’d received from a criminal injury claim. None of us could have imagined we’d go on to sell over 100 million records and take reggae from Birmingham to the world. It’s been

From viral videos to aviation rules: What happens when a flight is disrupted

After a video showing alleged unruly behaviour on board a FlySafair flight from Johannesburg to East London began circulating on social media, the airline confirmed it is investigating the incident. While viral footage often sparks strong reactions online, in-flight disruptions follow a very specific and tightly regulated process once the plane is on the ground. So what actually happens when a flight is disrupted mid-air? The captain has final authority onboard Once an aircraft's doors close, the captain is legally responsible for everyone on board. This means any behaviour deemed disruptive, unsafe or non-compliant with crew instructions is taken seriously, regardless of intent or circumstance. Cabin crew are trained to assess risk quickly and escalate concerns to the flight deck if necessary. In extreme cases, the captain may elect to divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport, a high-stakes manoeuvre that can cost an airline tens of thousands of dollars in fuel and landing fees, for which the disruptive passenger may be held liable. Cabin crew are trained to de-escalate first Contrary to what social media might suggest, the first response is rarely dramatic. Cabin crew are trained in de-escalation techniques designed to calm situations before they escalate. This can include verbal warnings, seating changes, or separating individuals if needed. Only if behaviour continues, or poses a safety risk, are further steps taken. Incidents are documented in detail If a disr

Sheer City is bringing a one-night underground takeover to Johannesburg

Johannesburg’s underground nightlife calendar is already packed, but this January, there’s a new name to pay attention to. Sheer City lands in Joburg for a one-night-only takeover on Friday, 23 January 2026, following its debut two-day block party in downtown Cape Town. The event takes over Club AM and Carfax, teaming up with VNJ BALL, one of the city’s most important forces in inclusive nightlife and ballroom culture. The result? A late-night, multi-room experience rooted in electronic music, queer expression, and the kind of dancefloor energy Joburg does better than most. What is Sheer City? According to the creators, Sheer City is a nightlife concept built around a return to rave culture at its most essential: strong selectors, curious crowds, and dancefloors shaped by community rather than spectacle. The Joburg edition strips things back into a high-energy club night, designed for people who care as much about who’s on the floor as who’s behind the decks. Running from 8 pm till late, the night brings together a mix of international and local electronic music heavyweights. Cinthie (Germany), Make A Dance (UK), and Esa (SA/UK) headline, delivering a blend of house, techno and left-field club sounds that sit comfortably between peak-time euphoria and after-hours release. Why VNJ BALL matters At the heart of the Johannesburg edition is its collaboration with VNJ BALL, a collective that has played a key role in shaping the city’s queer and ballroom-driven nightlife culture. The one thing that humble’s everyone in SA? A cellphone shop

The one thing that humble’s everyone in SA? A cellphone shop

There are many great unifiers in South Africa: load shedding schedules, our disdain for people who stand too close in queues, and the universal lie we tell cellphone shop owners: “I’ll come back later.” Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa was caught on CCTV doing exactly that. The President quietly strolled into a North West cellphone shop, asked about a screen protector, had a bit of small talk, and then delivered the most South African sign-off ever: “I’ll come back later.” Spoiler alert, he did not, in fact, come back later. In that moment, the President unknowingly became the most relatable man in the country. Because if there is one corner of the South African economy we all understand inherently, it’s the screen protector economy. This is a parallel universe of mall kiosks and glass counters where you never really intended to buy anything, but suddenly you’re being shown five options, three finishes, and a limited-time deal that expires the moment you step away. It’s also where we’ve all perfected the same defence mechanism. We nod thoughtfully. We say thank you, and then we deploy the escape phrase. “I’ll come back later.” The fact that even the President of South Africa uses the phrase feels quietly comforting. In Joburg especially, cellphone shops are democratic in the purest sense; everyone queues, everyone hesitates, everyone pretends they’re “just looking”. Power melts in these places, and titles don’t matter. What matters is whether you’re willing to pay
