Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg. From Ponte Tower to prime-time radio, Bryce Clarke, better known as DJ Ankletap, or Malume Tap to his fans, knows Joburg like few others. The seasoned broadcaster, who recently joined Jacaranda FM, brings his signature wit and deep love for the city to Time Out’s Local Intel series. A true Joburg loyalist, Ankletap has lived in 13 different locations across the city over 15 years, giving him a unique perspective on its vibrant and diverse offerings. "I actually lived in Hillbrow. I lived in Ponte Tower on the 51st floor. The views were ridiculous. I mean from the one side of my apartment, I could see all the way to the Union Buildings, and on the other side of the apartment, I could see all the way to the Dome in Northgate." Ankletap believes that Joburgers often take for granted that their city "doesn't sleep" and is a true "cultural and pop culture hub." "We've got everything except an ocean, and even then, if you're looking for water-based activities, we have that too. Joburg hosts nearly all major concerts, sporting events, and cultural gatherings in South Africa. People from other cities often hav

Welcome to Local Intel, your ultimate guide to experiencing Johannesburg like a true insider. In this series, we sit down with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their most cherished spots, their go-to experiences, and the untold stories that make this city so utterly captivating. Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg. Musician. Restauranteur. Creative force. João da Fonseca, better known as J’Something, wears many hats, but at his core, he’s a Joburger who’s deeply in tune with the city’s rhythm. In this edition of Local Intel, he shares his take on Jozi life. For J’, Johannesburg isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a co-creator in everything he does. "Jozi shaped me. It’s where I learnt to dream louder and work harder. The city doesn’t give anything away; it makes you earn it. That drive shows up in everything I do. In the music I make, the brands I build, and the way I think about community. It’s not always easy here, but that’s the beauty. It keeps you honest. It keeps you growing."  J' believes the energy of Johannesburg is something Joburgers often take for granted. "The energy man. It’s gritty, it’s raw, but it’s real. This city makes you want to build something. There’s this deep pulse that you only notice when you leave for a bit and come back. We live in a place that constantly pushes us, and I think that’s a blessing."  From slow mornings, in creative spaces, to unearthing low-key food gems and finding constant in

For our latest feature, we spoke with renowned film director and artist Justice Mukheli about his transformative journey into fatherhood and the profound shifts it has brought to his life and creative work. New Perspectives: Understanding motherhood and beyond Becoming a father to his one child has given Justice "new eyes." A pivotal realisation for him has been the distinct difference between parenting and motherhood. "As men, especially from the world I come from, women are not given the flowers they deserve," he candidly shares. He now understands that while men contribute significantly to parenting, the innate nurturing of a mother is unique. This shift has profoundly altered his perspective on the societal contribution of women. Beyond this, fatherhood brought a new awareness to his immediate surroundings. Simple things, like his home, took on new meaning. "Coming back home with her, I couldn't engage with my house the same way," he reflects, mindful of how his 9-month-old daughter occupies and explores every space. This newfound sensitivity ha

Johannesburg launches groundbreaking vehicle emissions study

Johannesburg launches groundbreaking vehicle emissions study

Johannesburg has just kicked off a major climate milestone. On Monday, 21 July 2025, the University of Johannesburg’s Process, Energy & Environment Technology Station (UJ-PEETS), in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), officially launched the TRUE Initiative, a first-of-its-kind project using remote sensing tech to measure the real emissions coming from the cars, taxis, and trucks on our roads every day. Powered by Breathe Cities, a global clean air initiative backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies, C40 Cities, and the Clean Air Fund, this project puts Johannesburg on the map alongside 14 other cities aiming to cut pollution and planet-warming emissions by 30% by 2030. Using advanced roadside remote sensing technology, this is the first time South Africa will collect large-scale, real-time data on actual vehicle emissions. Over 100,000 vehicles will be measured, from minibus taxis to SUVs, to paint a detailed picture of what’s really happening on our streets. Until now, Joburg didn’t have this kind of accurate data to drive targeted, effective policy. “Partnering with ICCT, COJ, and Breathe Cities on the TRUE Initiative marks a major step for air quality innovation and local capacity building in Johannesburg," says Boitemogelo Kwakwa, UJ PEETS Project Leader.  "UJ PEETS is actively involved in deploying advanced remote sensing tech, gaining direct experience in emissions monitoring and analysis. We’re also driving uptake by sharing insights

FlySafair flight disruptions: What it means for your travel plans and what you can do

FlySafair flight disruptions: What it means for your travel plans and what you can do

If you’re flying with FlySafair this week, here’s the short version: check your flight status before you leave for the airport. The airline is currently locked in wage negotiations with its pilots, and while operations continue for the most part, some flights have now been cancelled at the last minute due to unexpected pilot no-shows. FlySafair says it had already reassigned pilots and adjusted its schedule proactively, but several crew members who had confirmed availability to fly changed course late last night, leaving the airline with no choice but to ground certain flights today (18 July). All other flights are still operating as planned. Affected customers are being contacted directly using the details provided when booking. The airline has also said it will notify travellers immediately should further disruptions arise. While travellers are understandably frustrated, the airline is encouraging passengers to make changes online at no additional cost via the Manage Booking portal.   What to do if your flight is affected Travel expert Mummy Mafojane, GM of FCM South Africa, says the best way to deal with disruptions like this is to stay one step ahead: Use the airline app – it’s your best bet for up-to-date info and alerts. Rebook early – earlier flights have more backup options if things go sideways. Get travel insurance – especially if this is a work trip or has tight connections. Take screenshots – of your boarding pass, loyalty status and booking confirmations.
Move over Labubu, Labokbok is here to tackle your heart

Move over Labubu, Labokbok is here to tackle your heart

In a move that combines national pride, peak cuteness, and a cheeky nod to the global Labubu craze, Checkers has launched Labokbok, a tiny plush Springbok toy designed to clip onto your bag, backpack, or car keys. And South Africans are already obsessed. Sporting the green and gold and a wide-eyed charm that would melt even the most hardened All Blacks fan, Labokbok is part mascot, part fashion accessory, and full-on rugby fever dream. Designed to support the South African national rugby team, this plushie lets you carry a bit of Bokke pride wherever you go, whether you're heading to the stadium or just popping to the shops. Labokbok’s design feels like a clever play on Labubu, the wildly popular collectable creature that’s become a viral obsession among collectors and Gen Z alike. But where Labubu is a bit mischievous and monstrous, Labokbok is pure Springbok sweetness, complete with a fuzzy mane, soft ears, and tiny hooves ready to tackle the nation’s hearts. Checkers has been on a roll lately when it comes to capturing the zeitgeist, from snappy TikTok content to clever limited-edition drops. With the Rugby Championship and World Cup qualifiers heating up, Labokbok arrives at just the right moment to stir up supporter spirit. More than just a novelty, Labokbok is a playful expression of something much bigger: South Africa’s unmatched ability to remix trends with heart, humour, and homegrown flair. It’s a reminder that creativity isn’t limited to the art world or ad a
