The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.  On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity f

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. Johannesburg has always been a city of reinvention, and few people capture its evolving energy quite like award-winning radio personality and sex educator Leah Jazz. As a voice that resonates through the city’s airwaves and creative hubs, Leah’s perspective on Joburg is as vibrant and unapologetic as the streets she calls home. In this week’s feature, we dive into what makes the City of Gold shine for her right now. From the thriving, boundary-pushing energy of the queer community, led by the likes of the Johannesburg Queer Chorus and the electric VNJ parties, to the leafy, walkable charm of Parkhurst, Leah paints a picture of a city that is as much about intimate neighbourhood rituals as it is about high-octane nightlife. Whether she’s fuelling up with a crispy potato breakfast at Cnr Cafe or losing herself on the dancefloor at Club AM, Leah’s version of the good life is a love letter to Joburg’s grit, glamour, and greenery. Marc's by Marc Jacobs

Marc's by Marc Jacobs

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside Hyde Park Corner, Marc’s CafĂ© by Marc Jacobs arrives with serious credentials: the first permanent cafĂ© of its kind globally, and a bold fusion of fashion, food, and design. Set within Maison Deux, this intimate 20-seater doesn’t just trade on the Marc Jacobs name; it leans fully into it, offering a dining experience that feels as curated as a runway collection. There’s an unmistakable sense that this is more than just a cafĂ©. It’s a brand world brought to life, with Johannesburg cast as an unlikely but fitting stage for a concept that blends New York energy with Parisian finesse. The Vibe The space is small but considered; the ambient lighting, tactile finishes, and signature Marc Jacobs motifs (like cute daisies and buttons) create a setting that’s equal parts polished and playful. It feels exclusive without being intimidating, the kind of place where you might stop in for coffee and end up lingering longer than planned (which we did). There’s a quiet luxury to the experience, but it’s softened by a sense of fun. Every detail, from plating to presentation, feels intentional, making it as much about the visual experience as it is about what’s on the plate. The Food The menu draws inspiration from New York cafĂ© culture with a French-leaning culinary approach, all tailored to local tastes. It’s thoughtful and layered, with dishes designed much like fashion pieces – built around texture, contrast, and composition. My favourite dish was undoubtedly the Hell’s Kitch
Mira

Mira

4 out of 5 stars
Located in the heart of Sandton, Mira opened its doors late last year after a mysterious social media build-up that had me wondering: would this restaurant live up to the hype? After stopping by twice since opening, I’m happy to report that the answer is yes. Set within the Sandton Sun precinct, Mira is a 200-seater Mozambican-Portuguese restaurant that feels both transportive and deeply rooted in Joburg’s love for quiet luxury. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you step inside, and in Sandton, that’s no small thing. The Vibe Mira is designed to flex with whatever the moment calls for. Corporate catch-ups, date nights, celebratory dinners and indulgent evenings out all feel equally at home here. Despite its size, the restaurant never feels vast; the layout creates a sense of sophistication and intimacy that’s carefully considered. Every detail contributes to the atmosphere. From the curated art and music to the lighting and textures, nothing feels accidental. There’s an undeniable sense of polish here, refined but not stiff, making Mira feel like a destination rather than just another new opening. The Food Mira’s menu draws inspiration from Mozambique and Portuguese home cooking. For starters, the Lulas Fritas (deep-fried squid heads served with Mira-made tartare) are indulgent and deeply satisfying. The Mussel Pot, served in a creamy garlic sauce and white wine, is rich yet light and perfect for sharing. I didn’t share mine, a choice I would later re
The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

5 out of 5 stars
In a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, The Greenhouse in Sandton stands out as a benchmark of luxury dining and sophisticated ambience. This venue, nestled within a stunning, plant-filled glasshouse, consistently delivers an atmosphere where high-end cuisine meets curated glamour. Earlier this year, this reputation for excellence was solidified with an exciting partnership with the celebrated Shortmarket Club. This collaboration merged Joburg style with Cape Town's flair. The result is a dining experience that feels both familiar and deeply exclusive. The Vibe Every Joburger knows the late-night glamour of The Greenhouse. The restaurant called itself “South Africa’s first authentic supper club”. In a way, it reimagined dining as a fully immersive, sensory experience. Sunset cocktails glide effortlessly into decadent dinners and, eventually, late-night dancing. However, the addition of a lunchtime service was the daring move we didn't know we needed. It was quiet when we visited, as lunch at the Greenhouse is still a new concept. Lunchtime services only launched in November. Still, the lush, plant-draped courtyard looks just as good when the sun hits it at midday. The Food Designed with lazy, lingering afternoons in mind, The Greenhouse's new lunch menu offers a brilliant range of options. Choices include light pick-me-ups to rich, deeply satisfying plates. The difficulty isn't finding something good; it's choosing just one. (No, really, I ordered two mains.) I k
Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea

The clash comes at a tough time for the Buccaneers, who’ll be fresh off their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie just a week earlier, but if there’s one thing Pirates fans know, it’s that pressure brings out their best. The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

The week that moved Joburg: CR8TOR WEEK AFRICA 2026

Johannesburg’s creative scene took centre stage last week as CR8TOR WEEK AFRICA 2026 made its highly anticipated return, blurring the lines between high-level business, raw culture, and the kind of experiences that stay with you long after the house lights come up. What began as a niche meet-up for local makers has morphed into one of the continent’s heavy-hitting cultural platforms. This year, the city transformed into a sprawling campus of wellness activations, deep-dive talks, and late-night networking. The vibe The energy kicked off early with a community run through the heart of Sandton. It was the ultimate Joburg collision: fitness meets networking meets brand collab. From there, the week unfolded into a mix of panel discussions featuring Sean Brown and Nene Mahlangu, musical moments, and curated experiences that emphasised one key idea: creativity isn’t just expression; it’s business. CR8TOR WEEK 2026 The conversations The event moved way past surface-level inspiration. The rooms were buzzing with real talk on ownership, sustainability, and the long-term value of African creative IP. A standout all-female music panel turned the traditional idea of "influence" on its head, while broader sessions explored how global brands are finally moving past "using" culture for branding and instead using it as a genuine engine for growth. Beyond the boardroom True to form, CR8TOR WEEK wasn’t just about lanyards and lecture halls. Between the DJ sets, pop-up parties, and essential
A field guide to the Johannesburg Easter exodus

A field guide to the Johannesburg Easter exodus

There are two types of Joburgers over Easter: those who leave, and those who suddenly remember why they love an empty city. As the highways clog and OR Tambo transforms into a gladiatorial arena of delayed flights and passive-aggressive queueing, Johannesburg performs its annual ritual shedding. What remains is a strange, quieter version of the city, one where parking is abundant, brunch arrives on time, and you briefly consider never leaving again. But before that bliss? The exodus. And like any great migration, it comes with its own cast of characters. The pilgrims They are the logistical elite. Clad in the iconic green and silver, these pilgrims don’t do "vacations"; they do missions. While the rest of us are arguing over which cooler box fits in the boot, they are already mid-transit in a masterclass of coordination that puts corporates to shame. They aren't looking for a tan; they’re looking for a renewal. Maximum respect for the stamina. The humidity hunters Spot them by their oversized sunglasses, the smell of SPF 50 and a suspiciously early out-of-office reply. By Wednesday afternoon, they’ve mentally checked out; by Thursday morning, they’re on the N3, fuelled by the singular, manic goal of seeing the Indian Ocean before sunset. Construction begins on the View, Fourways new R100 million lifestyle hub

The Fourways horizon is about to look a lot more sophisticated. Construction is underway on the View, a premium R100-million lifestyle destination at the high-traffic intersection of Cedar and Witkoppen Roads. As part of a broader mission to reposition the Fourways Mall precinct, the View isn't just another shopping strip. It’s a carefully curated "unhurried" space designed to offer what the area has long craved: elevated dining, lush landscaping, and, as the name suggests, uninterrupted views across Joburg. A "hotel lobby" vibe for retail Forget the frantic energy of a standard mall. The architectural vision, led by MDS Architecture, centres on a three-level atrium that feels more like a sophisticated hotel lobby than a retail centre. Expect clean, contemporary lines, premium tactile materials, and a layout that prioritises light and flow. The tenant hitlist The real drawcard for locals will be the heavyweight lineup of destination brands, many of which are making their Fourways debut: Tasha's: Natasha Sideris is finally bringing her iconic all-day dining experience to the precinct. The Pantry: Opening in September 2026, this won’t just be a grocery store; it’s a full "gourmet experience" featuring a bespoke bakery, butchery, wine cellar, and ice cream parlour. Fournos Bakery: Set to be one of the first to arrive, opening its doors on 1 May 2026. Clay CafĂ©: Mid-2026 will see the arrival of this interactive favourite, blending creativity with social dining. Riverside Bliss: The ultimate Vaal River getaway for Joburgers in 2026

There’s nothing Joburgers love more than a getaway. As much as we love the city for its opportunities and liveliness, we also know that the pace is relentless, so breathers are mandatory. Just an hour away from the city lies The Riverside Sun, and it feels perfectly built for this moment. Sitting on the banks of the Vaal River in Vanderbijlpark, this Southern Sun property is one of those places that quietly exceeds every expectation. From the outside, it’s unassuming, neat, classic, and professional. But the moment you step through to the gardens, you realise you’ve traded the city’s frantic energy for a world that moves at the speed of the river. The poolside prelude The resort’s layout is a masterclass in utilising its best asset: the water. The gardens are manicured and lush, with rolling lawns that lead directly to the river’s edge. We kicked off our stay with lunch near the pool. Large enough to get properly lost in, the pool area anchors the resort’s leisure offering. For families, there’s a dedicated kids' play area on the grass, nearby, that promises to keep little ones busy while you rediscover what quiet sounds like. After lunch, we retreated to our rooms for a short reset. The accommodation here is designed for real-world travel, from Deluxe rooms with king-size comfort and river views to Family rooms that actually fit a family. That hour of downtime with my window open, overlooking the pool and the river, and soft jazz wafting through the air was exactly what the

How to navigate Middle East flight disruptions from OR Tambo

How to navigate Middle East flight disruptions from OR Tambo

If your Instagram feed hasn't already told you, the easy route to Europe and Asia just got a lot more complicated. After the late-February regional conflict grounded the Big Three - Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar, thousands of Joburgers found themselves playing a very stressful version of musical chairs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. Three weeks later, the birds are back in the sky, but the "new normal" at OR Tambo is looking a little different. We chatted with the pros at Corporate Traveller to see how you can navigate the turbulence. The cheap flight is officially extinct (for now) The Middle East is the primary artery for South Africans heading east or west. Yes, supply and demand are factors, but so are rising oil prices, longer flight paths and associated operational costs, and increased operational expenses, including insurance premiums, which are often passed on to travellers,” says Herman Heunes, GM of Corporate Traveller.
