Local Intel: Lucy Mahlangu

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. As a breakout star of The Real City Makoti, Lucy Mahlangu has become a relatable icon for the modern woman, one who balances a grounded approach to marriage with a fierce sense of independence. For Lucy, being a "city makoti" isn't about compromise; it’s about proving you can be a hardworking professional while embracing your cultural roots with dignity. “It was important to showcase my type of marriage because most women in the cities find it hard to understand that there are different types of marriages, and either way, it can still work out,” she explains. “Showcasing that you can stay in the city and still embrace and practice culture or tradition with dignity and pride,” she adds. When she isn't navigating the complexities of tradition on screen, you’ll find her leaning into the "soft life," scouting out Johannesburg’s hidden spa gems or soaking up the energy of local markets. From the hustle of building a business to sipping signature cocktails at TANG, Lucy views Jozi as a land of pure opportunity. We caught up with her to talk Limpopo retreats, favourite coffee dates, and why she believes the secret to success is simple: "Stand your ground, set your boundaries, and define your own goals." The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.  On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity f

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. Johannesburg has always been a city of reinvention, and few people capture its evolving energy quite like award-winning radio personality and sex educator Leah Jazz. As a voice that resonates through the city’s airwaves and creative hubs, Leah’s perspective on Joburg is as vibrant and unapologetic as the streets she calls home. In this week’s feature, we dive into what makes the City of Gold shine for her right now. From the thriving, boundary-pushing energy of the queer community, led by the likes of the Johannesburg Queer Chorus and the electric VNJ parties, to the leafy, walkable charm of Parkhurst, Leah paints a picture of a city that is as much about intimate neighbourhood rituals as it is about high-octane nightlife. Whether she’s fuelling up with a crispy potato breakfast at Cnr Cafe or losing herself on the dancefloor at Club AM, Leah’s version of the good life is a love letter to Joburg’s grit, glamour, and greenery. Marc's by Marc Jacobs

Marc's by Marc Jacobs

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside Hyde Park Corner, Marc’s CafĂ© by Marc Jacobs arrives with serious credentials: the first permanent cafĂ© of its kind globally, and a bold fusion of fashion, food, and design. Set within Maison Deux, this intimate 20-seater doesn’t just trade on the Marc Jacobs name; it leans fully into it, offering a dining experience that feels as curated as a runway collection. There’s an unmistakable sense that this is more than just a cafĂ©. It’s a brand world brought to life, with Johannesburg cast as an unlikely but fitting stage for a concept that blends New York energy with Parisian finesse. The Vibe The space is small but considered; the ambient lighting, tactile finishes, and signature Marc Jacobs motifs (like cute daisies and buttons) create a setting that’s equal parts polished and playful. It feels exclusive without being intimidating, the kind of place where you might stop in for coffee and end up lingering longer than planned (which we did). There’s a quiet luxury to the experience, but it’s softened by a sense of fun. Every detail, from plating to presentation, feels intentional, making it as much about the visual experience as it is about what’s on the plate. The Food The menu draws inspiration from New York cafĂ© culture with a French-leaning culinary approach, all tailored to local tastes. It’s thoughtful and layered, with dishes designed much like fashion pieces – built around texture, contrast, and composition. My favourite dish was undoubtedly the Hell’s Kitch
Mira

Mira

4 out of 5 stars
Located in the heart of Sandton, Mira opened its doors late last year after a mysterious social media build-up that had me wondering: would this restaurant live up to the hype? After stopping by twice since opening, I’m happy to report that the answer is yes. Set within the Sandton Sun precinct, Mira is a 200-seater Mozambican-Portuguese restaurant that feels both transportive and deeply rooted in Joburg’s love for quiet luxury. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you step inside, and in Sandton, that’s no small thing. The Vibe Mira is designed to flex with whatever the moment calls for. Corporate catch-ups, date nights, celebratory dinners and indulgent evenings out all feel equally at home here. Despite its size, the restaurant never feels vast; the layout creates a sense of sophistication and intimacy that’s carefully considered. Every detail contributes to the atmosphere. From the curated art and music to the lighting and textures, nothing feels accidental. There’s an undeniable sense of polish here, refined but not stiff, making Mira feel like a destination rather than just another new opening. The Food Mira’s menu draws inspiration from Mozambique and Portuguese home cooking. For starters, the Lulas Fritas (deep-fried squid heads served with Mira-made tartare) are indulgent and deeply satisfying. The Mussel Pot, served in a creamy garlic sauce and white wine, is rich yet light and perfect for sharing. I didn’t share mine, a choice I would later re
The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

5 out of 5 stars
In a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, The Greenhouse in Sandton stands out as a benchmark of luxury dining and sophisticated ambience. This venue, nestled within a stunning, plant-filled glasshouse, consistently delivers an atmosphere where high-end cuisine meets curated glamour. Earlier this year, this reputation for excellence was solidified with an exciting partnership with the celebrated Shortmarket Club. This collaboration merged Joburg style with Cape Town's flair. The result is a dining experience that feels both familiar and deeply exclusive. The Vibe Every Joburger knows the late-night glamour of The Greenhouse. The restaurant called itself “South Africa’s first authentic supper club”. In a way, it reimagined dining as a fully immersive, sensory experience. Sunset cocktails glide effortlessly into decadent dinners and, eventually, late-night dancing. However, the addition of a lunchtime service was the daring move we didn't know we needed. It was quiet when we visited, as lunch at the Greenhouse is still a new concept. Lunchtime services only launched in November. Still, the lush, plant-draped courtyard looks just as good when the sun hits it at midday. The Food Designed with lazy, lingering afternoons in mind, The Greenhouse's new lunch menu offers a brilliant range of options. Choices include light pick-me-ups to rich, deeply satisfying plates. The difficulty isn't finding something good; it's choosing just one. (No, really, I ordered two mains.) I k
Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea
Orlando Pirates vs Magesi FC

Orlando Pirates vs Magesi FC

All eyes are on Soweto as Orlando Pirates gear up to take on defending champions Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Quarter-Final at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, 28 October. The clash comes at a tough time for the Buccaneers, who’ll be fresh off their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie just a week earlier, but if there’s one thing Pirates fans know, it’s that pressure brings out their best. Magesi, meanwhile, won’t make it easy. As last year’s champions, they’re arriving confident and ready to defend their title. Kick-off is at 7 pm, with tickets available for R60.
The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Moonchild Sanelly is bringing the "Full Moon" back home to Jozi

Johannesburg, get ready to find your magic. After spending the last few years dominating global stages from Glastonbury to SXSW, the blue-maned trailblazer Moonchild Sanelly has officially announced her highly anticipated return to the Jozi stage. The show, titled FULL MOON – Return to Jozi, marks the first time Moonchild will perform her latest critically acclaimed album, Full Moon, live in her home city. Why this show matters For Moonchild, this isn't just another tour stop; it’s a full-circle moment. Despite her international pedigree, boasting collaborations with BeyoncĂ©, Gorillaz, and Wizkid, her heart remains firmly planted in the streets of Durban and Johannesburg, where her signature sound was born. “I have toured the world with Full Moon, and bringing this show home to Johannesburg is everything to me,” says Moonchild. “To share my alternative sound with my original Jozi crowd means the absolute world

Farewell to an urban icon: Johannesburg mourns the passing of Maria McCloy

Farewell to an urban icon: Johannesburg mourns the passing of Maria McCloy

Johannesburg's creative heart is heavy following the news of the passing of Maria McCloy, a true titan of South African media, fashion, and culture. The 50-year-old visionary passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at Milpark Hospital due to heart failure. In a statement released by her family, McCloy was remembered as a "vibrant and creative soul" who moved through the world with an infectious energy. To those who frequented the streets of Jozi, she was more than just a publicist or a DJ. McCloy was a cultural architect who spent decades shaping the city's aesthetic and sound, and was an inspiration for many young women in media, including myself.  A legacy painted in print and sound For our audience, Maria McCloy was a familiar and foundational figure. Long before "urban culture" became a marketing buzzword, McCloy was on the ground floor. As a co-founder of the pioneering urban culture agency and website Blackrage Productions in the late '90s, she helped elevate Kwaito and South African street style to a global stage. Her influence spanned multiple creative pillars: Fashion: Her eponymous accessory and footwear label was a love letter to African prints, famously turning the Seshweshwe fabric and the Umkhathakhane (blanket) into high-fashion staples. Music: As a DJ and a publicist, she was a tireless champion of local talent, often seen behind the decks at the city's most soulful venues, blending nostalgic South African hits with contemporary beats. Media: A journalis
The hidden Jozi wellness farm where "pasture meets plate"

The hidden Jozi wellness farm where "pasture meets plate"

In the bustling heart of Johannesburg, it’s rare to find a place that forces you to slow down and breathe, and if you do, it’s usually not a farm. But out in the west of Johannesburg (not that far west, it’s still very much in the city), you’ll find Pasture & Plate, a space for healing body, mind and soul. For Adi Abrahams, the founder of Pasture & Plate, the farm's inception wasn't a calculated corporate move; it was a series of crazy enough moments that turned a dilapidated property into a thriving wellness ecosystem. I sat down with Adi under the shade of a bustling tree to talk about horses, healing, and why you won't find a Coca-Cola on her menu. The dilapidated dream The origin story sounds like a movie script: Adi was simply taking a different route home from the school run when she spotted a run-down property. At the time, she was finishing her Pilates qualification and needed a space for events. "I thought to myself, this place looks like it needs help, but it could work. I was thinking about outdoor events and leaning into a healing-nature vibe. When I saw the old stables, I thought perhaps I could stable a horse here as well because I would love to get back into riding." What started as a search for a Pilates studio evolved into a full-scale farm restoration. When the previous horse stable tenants moved out, the landlord gave Adi the keys. “She said to me, ‘ If you think you can do all of that and still pay rent, here’s the keys and good luck to you.” Today, those

Is Le Petit Chef still Johannesburg's best interactive dining experience?

I’m a big fan of dinner theatre and interactive culinary experiences. A standout performance is what takes a good meal and makes it great, or takes a great meal and makes it exceptional. For me, the Le Petit Chef experience is fast becoming the king of the immersive dining castle in Johannesburg. For the uninitiated, Le Petit Chef is an interactive dining experience that uses 3D projection mapping to bring an animated, thumb-sized French chef to life right on your tablecloth. Each season or show follows a unique narrative that inspires the menu, allowing diners to join the world's smallest chef on a journey from preparation to plate. The concept sounds simple, but the execution is where the magic happens. I’ll be honest: I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but the Au Naturel experience was exactly the kind of whimsy we need in an increasingly serious world. Hosted at the elegant Blueberry Hill Hotel in Honeydew, the setting provides a perfect backdrop, the sweeping views of the Magaliesberg mountains mirroring the show's celebration of nature. Au Naturel is a six-course love letter to the outdoors. The story moves away from the bustling city, following the little chef as he forages for fresh ingredients and trawls the deep for jewels of the ocean. What makes this iteration stand out is the attention to sensory detail; as the digital scenery shifts from lush gardens to icy arctic landscapes, the music and table props change in tandem (even the servers get in on the action),

A family-style feast: A preview of KƍL Izakhaya’s Mother’s Day menu

KƍL Izakhaya’s Mother’s Day menu is built around exactly what the occasion should be about: gathering, sharing and celebrating over really good food. I recently attended a preview of the special Mother’s Day offering at KƍL Izakhaya, Hyde Park, and it was one of those dining experiences that stays with you long after dessert. The atmosphere felt warm and intimate, the service was thoughtful, and every dish arriving at the table felt like an invitation to slow down and enjoy the moment together. Taking centre stage is KƍL Izakhaya’s signature robata grill cooking style, powered by Binchƍ-tan charcoal, a near-smokeless Japanese white charcoal known for the beautifully clean, rich flavour it imparts. You can genuinely taste the difference. There is a depth and smokiness to the dishes that never overwhelms, only enhances. The Mother’s Day menu is designed family-style, which feels especially fitting for the occasion. Rather than individual plates, the table shares everything, encouraging conversation, passing plates around, and those spontaneous “you have to try this” moments that make meals memorable. And there was plenty worth talking about. The standout dishes for me were undoubtedly the beef short rib, the omakase sushi, and the matcha and black sesame ice cream. The beef short rib was deeply flavourful and incredibly tender, the kind of dish that quietly steals the show (It's a classy joint, but there was no way I wasn't licking my fingers after going hands-on with these rib

Red-hot wings: Virgin Atlantic increases capacity to Johannesburg

Red-hot wings: Virgin Atlantic increases capacity to Johannesburg

If you’ve been trying to snag a seat to London lately, you’ll know the demand is, quite frankly, soaring. Good news for the Joburg jet-set: Virgin Atlantic has heard the call and is officially turning up the volume on its South African routes for its 2026/27 winter (our summer) season. Starting October 2026, the airline is boosting its presence to a massive 10 weekly flights between London Heathrow and OR Tambo, alongside 11 weekly services into Cape Town. Whether you’re heading to the UK for a rainy-day pub crawl or a high-stakes boardroom meeting, here is what this expansion means for your next trip. More seats, better timing The expanded schedule isn't just about quantity; it’s about quality time. The new flights are designed to let you hit the ground running. Early arrivals will let you get into South Africa earlier in the morning, making the most of your day, while late departures will let you squeeze every last drop out of your Joburg stay, making for a seamless overnight sleep straight into London. The Clubhouse life For those flying Upper Class or holding Gold/Elite Plus status, the holiday starts long before you board. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at OR Tambo remains one of the city's best-kept transit secrets. The vibe: Elegant interiors and a relaxed atmosphere. The taste: A menu that balances international flair with local South African flavours, washed down with a curated selection of regional wines (this is honestly the biggest highlight for me). The perks: Sh

The sky is open: Emirates restores 96% of global network

If you’ve been itching to swap the Highveld for the neon lights of Tokyo, the cobbled streets of Rome, or a beach in the Maldives, your travel planning just got a whole lot easier. Emirates has announced that it has successfully restored 96% of its global network, marking a triumphant return to the skies after recent disruptions. For those of us flying out of OR Tambo, the news is especially sweet. The airline has reaffirmed its commitment to South Africa, maintaining its robust schedule of three daily flights from Johannesburg. The numbers With services resumed across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australasia, Emirates is now operating to 137 destinations in 72 countries. Here is what the comeback looks like by the numbers: 1,300+ weekly frequencies globally. 75% of pre-disruption capacity is already back in the air. 4.7 million passengers were carried even during the recent transition period. High-speed entertainment The onboard experience just got a massive tech upgrade. While we all love the 6,500 channels on the ice entertainment system (and the regionally inspired menus that actually taste like real food), the real game-changer is the connectivity. Emirates has rolled out Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi on 28 of its aircraft. That means ultra-fast, reliable internet that actually works, whether you're posting sunset wing-pics to Instagram or finishing a last-minute pitch before landing. Perks for the savvy traveller Emirates is sweetening the deal for South Africans looki

Get ready to dash: FlySafair teases its iconic birthday sale

If there is one thing South Africans know how to do, it's hunt for a bargain, and FlySafair is about to drop the mother of all sales. The airline has officially begun the countdown to its 12th Birthday Dash, and while the exact date is still shrouded in real suspense, the hype in the city is already reaching a fever pitch. Known for offering seats for less than the price of a Gatsby or a latte, the annual birthday sale is famous for crashing sites and causing a country-wide frenzy. This year, the airline is celebrating twelve years of low-cost travel, and the stakes are higher than ever. How to survive the dash To help Joburgers navigate the inevitable madness, FlySafair has released a playbook for those hoping to score a flight. If you want to succeed, you’re going to need speed. Prep Your Profile: Don’t wait until the sale starts to type in your ID number. Create a profile on the FlySafair website now and pre-load your travel and card details. Decide Your Destination: Have your dates and dream spots ready. Whether you're heading to the Mother City for a weekend break or visiting family in Gqeberha, hesitation is the enemy of the Dash. Use the App for Normal Business: As a pro tip for regular travellers, the airline suggests downloading their mobile app for non-sale bookings or to manage existing flights to avoid heavy traffic on the main website. A family affair: Highlights from the 2026 Savanna Comics' Choice Comedy Awards

Jozi was roaring with laughter this past Saturday as South Africa’s premier comedic talent descended on The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City for the 13th Annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards. If there’s one thing we know about the local comedy scene, it’s that it operates exactly like a brilliantly dysfunctional family, which made this year’s theme, A Family Affair, spot on. Nobody holds back on the punchlines, everyone has a role to play, and the drama is always served with a side of absolute hilarity. South Africa’s first family of comedy (The Goliath Family) held things down as the hosts for the evening. Jason, Donovan, Nicholas, and Kate Goliath brought their signature chemistry to the stage, making the packed theatre feel like one giant, rowdy living room. The night was packed with nothing but the best in South African comedy from iconic roasts to standing ovations and some genuinely unforgettable acceptance speeches, proving exactly why South African comedy continues to punch above its weight on the global stage. The big winners The coveted Waldo trophies found homes with some very deserving recipients this year. Standout moments included Dillan Oliphant bagging two massive awards, Comedian of the Year and Best Solo Show for Masekind, and industry heavyweight David Kau taking home the prestigious Legacy Award, cementing his place in the history books. Here is the full list of who took home a Waldo at the 2026 awards: Comedian of the Year: Dillan Oliphant Headline
