Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg. From Ponte Tower to prime-time radio, Bryce Clarke, better known as DJ Ankletap, or Malume Tap to his fans, knows Joburg like few others. The seasoned broadcaster, who recently joined Jacaranda FM, brings his signature wit and deep love for the city to Time Out’s Local Intel series. A true Joburg loyalist, Ankletap has lived in 13 different locations across the city over 15 years, giving him a unique perspective on its vibrant and diverse offerings. "I actually lived in Hillbrow. I lived in Ponte Tower on the 51st floor. The views were ridiculous. I mean from the one side of my apartment, I could see all the way to the Union Buildings, and on the other side of the apartment, I could see all the way to the Dome in Northgate." Ankletap believes that Joburgers often take for granted that their city "doesn't sleep" and is a true "cultural and pop culture hub." "We've got everything except an ocean, and even then, if you're looking for water-based activities, we have that too. Joburg hosts nearly all major concerts, sporting events, and cultural gatherings in South Africa. People from other cities often hav

Welcome to Local Intel, your ultimate guide to experiencing Johannesburg like a true insider. In this series, we sit down with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their most cherished spots, their go-to experiences, and the untold stories that make this city so utterly captivating. Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg. Musician. Restauranteur. Creative force. João da Fonseca, better known as J’Something, wears many hats, but at his core, he’s a Joburger who’s deeply in tune with the city’s rhythm. In this edition of Local Intel, he shares his take on Jozi life. For J’, Johannesburg isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a co-creator in everything he does. "Jozi shaped me. It’s where I learnt to dream louder and work harder. The city doesn’t give anything away; it makes you earn it. That drive shows up in everything I do. In the music I make, the brands I build, and the way I think about community. It’s not always easy here, but that’s the beauty. It keeps you honest. It keeps you growing."  J' believes the energy of Johannesburg is something Joburgers often take for granted. "The energy man. It’s gritty, it’s raw, but it’s real. This city makes you want to build something. There’s this deep pulse that you only notice when you leave for a bit and come back. We live in a place that constantly pushes us, and I think that’s a blessing."  From slow mornings, in creative spaces, to unearthing low-key food gems and finding constant in

New Perspectives: Understanding motherhood and beyond Becoming a father to his one child has given Justice "new eyes." A pivotal realisation for him has been the distinct difference between parenting and motherhood. "As men, especially from the world I come from, women are not given the flowers they deserve," he candidly shares. He now understands that while men contribute significantly to parenting, the innate nurturing of a mother is unique. This shift has profoundly altered his perspective on the societal contribution of women. Beyond this, fatherhood brought a new awareness to his immediate surroundings. Simple things, like his home, took on new meaning. "Coming back home with her, I couldn't engage with my house the same way," he reflects, mindful of how his 9-month-old daughter occupies and explores every space. This newfound sensitivity ha

Behind The counter: Aliens, astronauts and art in Soweto

Step out of the spotlight and into the soul of the city, one counter at a time. Behind The Counter is a Time Out Johannesburg series celebrating the real people who power the city, from artists and baristas to tailors and traders. These are the everyday legends giving Joburg its soul, one story at a time. On the bustling stretch of Vilakazi Street in Soweto, surrounded by history and heavy foot traffic, one artist quietly pours his soul onto canvas. For him, painting isn’t just a career - it’s a deeply personal act of reflection, resistance, and release. And while his work travels the world, it always begins right here, rooted in the streets that raised him. But Smokey Radebe’s art is not your average African art. While animals and icons grace the lines that display his work, most of his paintings invite you to step off the pavement on Vilakazi Street and into another dimension, one where aliens appear in vivid colour and spaza shops are transformed into cultural artefacts. Time Out JohannesburgRadebe Gallery on Vilakazi Street Beyond the pavement My personal favourite is a painting of an astronaut and an alien sitting around an mbawula (a homemade heater) exchanging ideas, while the Soweto Towers loom large in the background. This is the world according to Smoky, who is turning everyday life into bold, arresting works that refuse to be ignored. “I paint whatever affects me – things that bother me, make me happy, or spark curiosity,’ he explains. “The painting of the astron

Originally from Johannesburg, Wolov’s latest project,  a heartfelt dramedy pilot titled Ashes to Ashes, is turning heads at major international film festivals, racking up nominations at more than 11 of them. Just ahead of Mandela Day, her rise is a reminder of the creative power simmering in South Africa’s streets. Ashes to Ashes tackles family, grief, faith, and legacy with a raw honesty and a good dose of humour, striking a balance that’s resonated with audiences across the globe. Think Wales International Film Fest, New York Lift-Off, Lima Web Fest, and the Indie Shorts Awards, and you’re only scratching the surface. So, what’s Ashes to Ashes all about? Set against the backdrop of an emotionally chaotic family funeral, the story follows a mismatched group of siblings forced to reunite, and reckon with each other, as they scatter their father’s ashes. It’s raw, funny, and full of unexpected tenderness, exploring grief, legacy, and the complicated beauty of family ties. “I drew from my own family,” says Wolov. “It’s about how we carry loss and identity and the humour that somehow survives even the hardest moments.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by @ashestoashespilot Wolov produced the pilot from concept to completion, showcasing her signature blend of artistic integrity and sharp execution. Down but not out: Mango Airlines plots its comeback after court ruling

The Gauteng High Court handed down a major judgment on 17 June 2025, effectively halting the implementation of Mango Airlines’ long-awaited Business Rescue Plan, for now. This comes after the airline announced its much-awaited return earlier in the month.  The ruling was against a key part of Mango Airlines’ Business Rescue Plan, specifically a clause that would’ve transferred certain rights to third parties. The court found this clause invalid, effectively putting a pause on the plan as it stands. But don’t count Mango out just yet. Business Rescue Practitioner Sipho Sono has confirmed that Mango will challenge the ruling. A legal appeal is already in the works, with documents being prepared to set things back on course. It’s a reminder that even in the face of turbulence, the fight for Mango’s return to the skies is far from over. While this legal hiccup may delay Mango’s long-anticipated return, it doesn’t signal the end. The planned appeal keeps hopes alive for thousands of loyal travellers and employees who’ve been eagerly awaiting news of Mango’s future. Since entering business rescue in 2021, Mango’s story has been one of uncertainty, resilience, and public support. The airline once dominated the local skies with its signature orange planes and competitive fares, making travel more accessible for South Africans. The possibility of a return has remained a hot topic, especially in a market hungry for affordable domestic travel. Although it’s still a waiting game, one thi

No bailouts needed: SAA’s comeback story takes flight

For the first time in over a decade, South African Airways (SAA) is charting its own course, independently. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy confirmed during her department’s 2025/26 Budget Vote speech that the national airline is now operating without government guarantees, fully self-funding its operations, fleet expansion and route growth. The turnaround is striking. After years of bailouts, business rescue, and public doubt, SAA reported a profit of R252 million for the 2022/2023 financial year, its first in more than ten years. According to a 2021 study by Oxford Economics Africa cited by Creecy, SAA contributed R9.1 billion to the national GDP in 2023/24, a figure projected to more than triple to R32.6 billion by 2029/30. Employment linked to the airline is expected to grow from 25,000 to over 86,700 jobs in that same period. Now leaner, focused, and profitable, SAA is actively pursuing regional and global route expansion, with new services launched from Johannesburg and Cape Town aimed at improving intra-African connectivity. The airline has also begun a measured fleet expansion to meet rising demand, positioning itself as a serious connector of people, trade, and tourism across the continent and beyond. SAA remains open to a strategic equity partner to support its long-term growth ambitions, but with unencumbered assets and restored financial health, the airline is no longer the burden it once was. Instead, it’s reemerging as a valuable national asset and a rare e

What's in the box? A guide to the Blind Box craze in South Africa

What's in the box? A guide to the Blind Box craze in South Africa

Imagine spending R600 on a tiny toy… and not even knowing what it is until you open it. That’s the magic – and madness – of Blind Box collectables, a global trend that’s hit South Africa hard (we're looking at you Labubu). Thanks to brands like Pop Mart, Blind Boxes are everywhere, from niche toy shops to your TikTok For You page. But with the hype comes confusion: Are the prices legit? How do you know what’s real or fake? And who in their right mind is spending thousands on a little vinyl figure? We spoke to Dean Pillay, the man who brought official Pop Mart products to South Africa, to unpack the blind box boom and how local collectors can navigate it. So…what exactly is a Blind Box?
