The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.  On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity f

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. The pace of Joburg is like pure adrenaline; it is fast, exhilarating, and full of possibilities. For television personality and PR co-founder Lee-Roy Wright, it’s this energy that fuels both his career and his creativity. “Johannesburg has become the city where I thrive,” he says. “It gave me the opportunity to start my television career, it’s where I discovered the beauty of radio, and it sets the tone for my PR company, The Platinum Club.” Having traded the quiet streets of Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape for the hustle of the City of Gold, Lee-Roy has fully embraced Joburg life, from its entertainment and media opportunities to its underrated gems. (Case in point: he swears by Gold Reef City, a place he says locals take for granted but shouldn’t.) We sit down with actor Christopher Jaftha, a familiar face from the screen and stage, whose latest film, Khaki Fever, is generating a buzz. For Jaftha, Joburg is more than just a backdrop to his career; it’s a crucible that has sharpened his craft and his character. He describes the city as a smaller-scale New York, a place where the hustle is real and the odds are stacked high, but where resilience is forged in the grind. What many locals overlook, he says, are Joburg’s greatest treasures: its people and its food, especially the snacks, which he swears are some of the best in the world. It’s this mix of grit and flavour that keeps him rooted here, and that continues to shape the stories he tells on screen. The Whippet

Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy café that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The café effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. During the week, the café attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Jacaranda season in Johannesburg: How to make the most of it

Jacaranda season in Johannesburg: How to make the most of it

Every spring, Johannesburg transforms into a lavender dreamscape as thousands of jacaranda trees burst into bloom, draping the city in soft shades of my favourite colour, purple. From late October through November, the streets of Rosebank, Saxonwold, Melville, and Westcliff shimmer under a canopy of violet petals, a brief but breathtaking reminder of Joburg's beauty in full colour. Whether you're a local who never gets tired of the view or a visitor chasing that perfect shot, jacaranda season is worth celebrating in style. Here's how to get in on the action. See the best of the bloom While jacarandas are scattered across the city, a few neighbourhoods truly put on a show. Wander down Parks Road and Oxford Road in Rosebank, Upper Houghton, or The Valley Road in Westcliff for postcard-worthy views. Melville's 4th Street offers a laid-back backdrop framed by purple blossoms and vintage cafés, perfect for a slow brunch beneath the trees. If you're after that panoramic "purple haze" view, head up to Northcliff Ridge Ecopark or climb The Westcliff Steps near the Four Seasons Hotel, where you'll see Johannesburg's leafy sprawl melt into a violet horizon. Book a jacaranda photoshoot Jacaranda season is fleeting, but the photos can last forever. For those who want to capture the city's violet glow, photographers (Like iSense Photography) in the city offer curated outdoor photo shoots beneath the blooms. Ye Live in South Africa: Here’s everything you need to know

Ye Live in South Africa: Here’s everything you need to know

Last month, we confirmed Kanye West, or Ye as he’s now known, is bringing his long-rumoured Ye Live in South Africa concert to Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday, 13 December 2025.  When Ye first hinted at the show on social media earlier, fans were understandably cautious. With Hey Neighbour Festival’s recent abrupt cancellation still fresh in the city’s memory, Joburgers are now wary of grand announcements that don’t materialise. But this time, the details appear to check out. The concert is fully verified, with Ye’s executive producer and production team having already visited Ellis Park to finalise logistics and sign agreements with local organisers according to Jay Carson, Event Curator at Jay Carson & Co. Ticket sales are live, partners are confirmed, and plans are locked in, giving fans every reason to believe that Ye really is about to touch down in Joburg.  The concert, presented by Monyake Group, Jay Carson & Co., and Ticketpro, promises a full-scale production that will showcase Ye’s 29-year music legacy, blending art, sound, and spectacle in true Ye fashion. “Ye is a name that speaks for itself,” Jay notes in a statement issued this week. “We are proud and excited to bring such a prolific artist for a night to remember. We can guarantee a show with top-tier production levels, amazing music, and what will feel like home to all fans, both old and new.” According to Jay, the setlist is still under wraps, but fans can expect a career-spanning performance fi
Behind The Counter: Meet the man who brings soul to the Sandton Sun

Behind The Counter: Meet the man who brings soul to the Sandton Sun

Step out of the spotlight and into the soul of the city, one counter at a time. Behind The Counter is a Time Out Johannesburg series celebrating the real people who power the city, from artists and baristas to tailors and traders. These are the everyday legends giving Joburg its soul, one story at a time. At the iconic Sandton Sun & Towers, luxury doesn’t only live in the marble and glass, it lives in people like Mduduzi “Duzi” Maphanga, whose service is less of a job and more of an art form. Born in Numbi, a village outside Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, Duzi’s story is one of quiet defiance, hard work, and unrelenting passion for hospitality. “I grew up watching my father’s artistry in the kitchen,” he says. “He worked with Southern Sun for nearly 30 years. I used to watch him cook with wine, the aromas filling our home, and that’s where it all began.” Though his parents imagined a future in engineering for him, Duzi’s heart was already set on service. From humble beginnings as a runner at Spur in Nelspruit to completing his postgraduate studies in Hospitality Management at the University of Johannesburg, he’s carved a path that’s as refined as the wines he now serves. Today, Duzi works as a Butler and Service Maestro at the five-star Sandton Sun, where he believes luxury lies in the details. “I tailor my service to each guest, anticipating their needs, reading the room, and ensuring they leave with a smile. That’s when I know I’ve done my job.” A memorable moment over a bottle o
Inside Southern Sun’s month-long Champagne Day celebration

Inside Southern Sun’s month-long Champagne Day celebration

I arrived at the San Deck at Southern Sun Sandton & Towers just as the late afternoon light turned the city gold. The skyline shimmered, glasses clinked, and the unmistakable pop of corks set the tone for a night dedicated to one thing: champagne. Trays of Moët & Chandon glided between guests, laughter drifted on the breeze, and it felt like the entire rooftop had stepped into its most glamorous self. It wasn’t just another Sandton soirée. This was a nod to Southern Sun’s month-long Champagne Celebration, a sparkling extension of World Champagne Day that runs from October 16 to November 16, 2025. And while the bubbles were flowing, the evening had a deeper story, one of accessible luxury, sustainability, and a glimpse into the future of Champagne itself.  Bubbles without borders What makes this celebration stand out is that Southern Sun isn’t limiting it to a single day. The group is keeping the good times (and good prices) going across its hotels for an entire month. As Southern Sun Group Sommelier Miguel Chan explained during his address, this commitment to value is what makes their champagne experiences so unique.  "The reason why we can make this party possible across all Southern Sun hotels is because of our pricing," he explained, adding: "We can confidently say our champagne prices are the best in the world compared to any of our hotel brand competitors, anywhere. In Europe, Asia, America, and Australia, we have the best prices." Looking around at the San Deck’s crowd,

South Africa has just been named one of the world’s top five luxury travel destinations in the Roxstar Luxury Travel Trends Report 2025, rubbing shoulders with heavyweights like the USA, UAE, Maldives, and France. According to the report, based on Roxstar’s bookings from 2022 to 2025, international travellers can’t get enough of South Africa’s distinctive mix of wild adventure and sophisticated city life. From world-class safaris to fine dining and exclusive experiences, it seems the rest of the world is finally catching on to what locals already know: there’s no place quite like this. “South Africa holds a special place in the hearts of luxury travellers,” says Roxy Robinson, founder of Roxstar Luxury Travel. “Few destinations offer such a compelling mix"  Among the country’s most sought-after stays are high-end properties like the Belmond Mount Nelson (owned by luxury group LVMH), Cape Town's  One&Only, and safari icons such as Singita, Londolozi, and Cheetah Plains. The report also highlights a growing appetite for curated experiences, think private safaris with expert photographic guides, intimate tastings in the Winelands, and after-hours access to cultural landmarks. Culinary travel is another driving force, with South Africa’s top chefs being recognised on the global stage. While South Africa’s luxury credentials remain strong, Robinson notes that competition is heating up. Destinations like Saudi Arabia, Patagonia, and Japan are making serious moves to lure the high-e

Eat chocolate, feel better: The wellness workshop you didn’t know you needed

Eat chocolate, feel better: The wellness workshop you didn’t know you needed

For years, chocolate has been the ultimate guilty pleasure, but holistic coach and self-professed choc-a-holic Nicola Bentley is here to change that narrative. Her Medicine of Joy Chocolate Workshop, happening in Johannesburg this month, invites locals to experience chocolate in a whole new way: as a source of vitality, creativity, and calm. Nicola’s inspiration stems from her deep passion for health and the powerful properties of cacao, the raw, unprocessed form of chocolate. “I love empowering people to eat delicious food that’s good for you in fun ways without deprivation,” she says. Chocolate as medicine The idea of “chocolate as medicine” sits at the heart of Nicola’s work. Traditional chocolate, she explains, is often loaded with sugar and dairy, turning something naturally healing into “something quite toxic.” The workshop teaches attendees how to make low-temperature, high-cacao chocolates that are refined sugar and dairy-free, enriched with superfoods and adaptogens. As she quotes Ann Wigmore: “The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” With high-quality, mindful ingredients, chocolate becomes a nourishing source of macro and micronutrients, a far cry from the sugar crash of your usual supermarket slab. Nicola Bentley The power of cacao Having worked with Soaring Free Superfoods for years, she became convinced of cacao's potential, especially when combined with other medicinal mushrooms and superfood
Wits and UJ among South Africa’s top universities in global rankings

Wits and UJ among South Africa’s top universities in global rankings

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 have landed, and South Africa has plenty to be proud of. Thirteen local universities made this year’s list, which ranks 2,191 institutions across 115 countries and territories, putting the country firmly on the global higher education map. Among the top performers are Johannesburg’s own academic powerhouses, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Wits secured a spot in the 301–350 band, ranking third overall in South Africa, while UJ came in just behind at 351–400, earning the title of the fourth-best university in the country. The Times Higher Education rankings are widely considered the gold standard in global academia, trusted by students, university leaders, and governments alike. They assess universities across four key pillars: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, using 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide a comprehensive picture of how institutions perform worldwide. Joburg’s academic scene is having a moment While South Africa didn’t crack the world’s top 100 this year, having 12 institutions recognised in the THE 2026 rankings is no small feat. Wits and UJ, both deeply embedded in the city’s fabric, are not only producing world-class graduates but also driving research, entrepreneurship, and innovation, key ingredients for a thriving urban future. Wits’ continued presence among the top 350 globally cements its

Sky-high sipping: How to survive rooftop season in Joburg

Sky-high sipping: How to survive rooftop season in Joburg

The World’s 50 Best Bars list just dropped, and Joburg might not have cracked it this time, but honestly, Joburg’s rooftop bar scene can hold its own against the best of them.  From The Roof in Bryanston to Alto234 towering over the Sandton skyline, Johannesburg’s rooftop bar scene is officially in full swing. The weather’s perfect, the DJs are warming up, and the spritzes are flowing, which means it’s also time for a quick etiquette refresher before you claim your corner of the skyline. Respect the golden hour Golden hour waits for no one. If you’re still in traffic when the sky turns peach and gold, you’ve already missed the magic. Aim to arrive early, claim your spot, and watch the city glow beneath you. Bonus points if your drink matches the sunset. Dress for the vibe (and the wind) Rooftop bars are where Joburg’s style game goes sky-high. Think effortless, not overdone, breathable fabrics, bold prints, and something that won’t fly off when the breeze kicks in. And yes, heels are optional, but attitude isn’t. Be cocktail curious Sure, you can order an Aperol spritz (again). But maybe this is your sign to try something new, a smoky mezcal, a cucumber gin cooler, or a local craft cocktail you can’t pronounce. Rooftops are for experimenting, not just posing. Take the pic, then put your phone down The skyline will still be there after the perfect shot. Snap your selfie, tag your location, and then live a little. Nothing kills the vibe faster than a full-blown photoshoot while
