The 7 best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg

The 7 best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg

Johannesburg might be known as the City of Gold, but it also shines in another way, with its gloriously dramatic summer storms. The weather here is generally kind all year round, never too hot or too cold, but between September and May, the Highveld comes alive with rolling thunder and sudden downpours. December is usually the wettest month, and this year, forecasters are predicting even wetter conditions stretching from spring into early summer. This isn’t your average drizzle either, Jozi’s subtropical climate and high altitude mean we see an unusually high number of lightning strikes (up to 20 flashes per square kilometre a year!), turning the sky into a light show on most summer afternoons. While it pays to be prepared - think checking the forecast, wearing proper shoes, packing a waterproof jacket, and driving carefully, sometimes the best move is to embrace it. Rainy days are a perfect excuse to slow down, switch gears, and explore a softer side of the city. So grab your umbrella and join us as we dive into the best things to do on a rainy day in Johannesburg, from cosy coffee spots and cultural hideaways to all-weather adventures worth braving the storm for.  RECOMMENDED 📍 The best things to do in JohannesburgđŸ›ïžÂ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏹 The best hotels in JohannesburgđŸœÂ The best restaurants in JohannesburgđŸș The best pubs and bars in Johannesburg Follow Time Out Johannesburg on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram!

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. We sit down with actor Christopher Jaftha, a familiar face from the screen and stage, whose latest film, Khaki Fever, is generating a buzz. For Jaftha, Joburg is more than just a backdrop to his career; it’s a crucible that has sharpened his craft and his character. He describes the city as a smaller-scale New York, a place where the hustle is real and the odds are stacked high, but where resilience is forged in the grind. What many locals overlook, he says, are Joburg’s greatest treasures: its people and its food, especially the snacks, which he swears are some of the best in the world. It’s this mix of grit and flavour that keeps him rooted here, and that continues to shape the stories he tells on screen. Lacuna Bistro

Lacuna Bistro

4 out of 5 stars
Tucked inside The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Lacuna Bistro offers a calm, contemporary escape from the fast-paced business district outside its doors. With its glass-lined dining room overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and pool, it’s the kind of spot where you can shift gears effortlessly, from boardroom mode to a relaxed, quietly indulgent meal. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply looking for a refined dining experience in the heart of Sandton, Lacuna proves there’s more to this business-focused address than meets the eye.  The Vibe By day, Lacuna Bistro is a relaxed space that readily welcomes family breakfasts at the buffet, the business crowd for lunch, and afternoon drinks with the girls. By night (and on Fridays in particular), it transforms into a moody space that effortlessly welcomes couples (or even friends) seeking a refined night out. With the lights low and a lounge singer crooning soothing tunes in the background, the atmosphere fosters an intimate ambience.   The Food The menu at Lacuna is a fusion of Mediterranean-style dishes rooted in South African culinary heritage. It was recently reimagined and updated, and is a tight collection of both comfort food and speciality dishes. During our visit, we indulged in the restaurant’s limited-edition Fivefold Indulgence menu, a lavish five-course offering. Our meal began with a golden prawn arancini amuse-bouche, served with marinara aioli, a crisp and flavourful start. Starters followed, and we opted
The Maslow Sandton

The Maslow Sandton

3 out of 5 stars
Sandton has no shortage of polished hotels, but few strike the balance between business efficiency and quiet indulgence quite like The Maslow Hotel. Secure in its identity as a specialist business hotel, it delivers precisely what you’d expect,  yet still manages to surprise with thoughtful touches that go beyond the boardroom. I’ve always been intrigued by the shape of The Maslow. From the right angle, it looks a bit like a cruise ship, a clever architectural “Jedi mind trick,” perhaps, designed to shift guests from business to leisure mode. Whatever the intention, it works. Once inside, you feel a welcome sense of distance from the bustle of Sandton’s financial district. Why stay at The Maslow Sandton Located in the heart of Sandton’s financial hub, just a few minutes from the Gautrain station, The Maslow is tailored for the modern traveller who values both productivity and comfort. It’s equipped with sleek conference rooms, high-speed internet, and hybrid-ready meeting spaces. A complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain and Sandton City adds convenience, while a private chauffeur service is available for those who prefer a more personalised experience. Beyond the boardroom, the hotel’s lush gardens and pool area offer a tranquil escape from the city’s buzz, a surprisingly peaceful spot in the heart of the hustle and bustle. It’s no wonder The Maslow is starting to find a new identity as a date-night destination too. What are the rooms like at The Maslow Sandton? The Maslow fea

The clash comes at a tough time for the Buccaneers, who’ll be fresh off their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie just a week earlier, but if there’s one thing Pirates fans know, it’s that pressure brings out their best. Magesi, meanwhile, won’t make it easy. As last year’s champions, they’re arriving confident and ready to defend their title. Kick-off is at 7 pm, with tickets available for R60.
The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

The Marble Universe expands: a new five-star Marble hotel is coming to Sandton

While the Marvel Universe deals in capes and comic lore, the ever-growing Marble Universe trades in luxury, design, and Joburg’s favourite hospitality experiences, and its next chapter is a five-star hotel at The Olympus in Sandton. Marble Hospitality, the powerhouse behind some of the city’s most influential dining destinations, has officially announced its move into the hotel world. The Marble Collection Hotel, a 32-room luxury property inside the new Olympus Sandton development, marks the brand’s boldest expansion yet. “This new hotel represents our vision to redefine luxury accommodation in South Africa,” says founder and partner Gary Kyriacou. “It’s the next evolution of the Marble brand, bringing our attention to detail, creativity, and experiential approach into hospitality at an entirely new level.” Building the Marble Universe Since opening its first restaurant in 2016, Marble Hospitality has built more than a portfolio; it’s shaped a lifestyle. Between Marble in Rosebank, the Cape Town outpost at the V&A Waterfront, the always-buzzing Saint and the ultra-glam Zioux in Sandton, plus the wildly successful Pantry by Marble, the group has rewritten what premium dining looks like in South Africa.  They’ve recently added events to their repertoire with the indulgent Marble Circus, and now, the move into luxury hotels feels like a natural next step in a universe that keeps expanding. Ke Dezemba: A Jobuger's guide to surviving SA's silly season

Ke Dezemba: A Jobuger's guide to surviving SA's silly season

December in South Africa is not just a month, it's a lifestyle. A vibe. A full-contact sport. It's the time of year when Joburg empties faster than a Woolies rotisserie shelf at 5pm, everyone suddenly becomes a "born-again outdoor enthusiast", and your social calendar transforms into a high-stakes obstacle course. Whether you're sticking around in the City of Gold or heading for the nearest coastline, here's your essential guide to making it out of Dezemba alive, hydrated, sun-screened, and (mostly) financially intact. 1. Prepare your liver. No, really... December in SA is basically one long social event with occasional naps. Office parties. Friendsmas dinners. Sunset drinks. Sunrise drinks. "Quick catch-ups" that turn into "why is it 2am?" Time Out Tip: Eat before you drink. Drink water. Or ignore all of this and just make peace with rehydration sachets as your new personality. Also read: The 15 best rooftop bars in Johannesburg and The 11 best pubs and bars in Johannesburg 2. Accept that traffic is a reality, not a suggestion If you're heading out of Joburg between 14 and 24 December, good luck, sweet angel. Those N3 and N1 roads? They become emotional journeys. Character arcs. Hero quests. Time Out Tip: Download podcasts. Pack snacks. Meditate. Make peace with hooting. If you're staying in Joburg, congratulations! You now own the city. Sandton transitions from a bustling parking lot into a ghost town. Melville belongs to you. You can find parking everywhere. Bask in it. Al
Johannesburg Taste Test: The Peech Summer Sundowner Sessions

Johannesburg Taste Test: The Peech Summer Sundowner Sessions

Long, warm Joburg evenings are made for lazy golden hours, and The Peech Boutique Hotel has perfected the formula with its Summer Sundowner Sessions. Running from Thursday to Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm, this intimate early-evening ritual invites guests into the hotel's lush gardens, patio, and rooftop bar. This effortlessly chic setting feels worlds away from the city rush. It's easily one of Johannesburg's best summer sundowner experiences, and a must-do for anyone who loves great food, great drinks and great atmosphere. For R145, your first round sets the tone: a tapas of your choice from The Pot Luck Club Joburg's new aperitivo-style menu paired with a complimentary cocktail, glass of wine or local craft beer. It's an incredible value considering the standard of food and drink. The Pot Luck Club doesn't do average. The tapas menu is globally inspired, playful, and dangerously moreish. The Short Rib Roti is a standout, and I could easily turn this into a meal; it's rich, tender and deeply satisfying. The Beetroot Tartare, a silky, melt-in-your-mouth favourite, vanishes quickly on every table, while the Fish Tacos, Prawn Cocktail, and delicate Salmon Tartare bring bright, summery flavours that suit the season perfectly.   The Peech HotelShort Rib Roti and Cucumber and Elderflower cocktail To drink, the hotel's bar team leans into light, refreshing flavours. The house cucumber and elderflower cocktail is the undisputed star (the mocktail is just as good); it's cool, fragran

We braved the traffic jam and eager crowds to stop by and found wide aisles, a broad mix of groceries, household goods, electronics, apparel and everyday essentials.   While many South Africans (us included) expected shelves lined with American goods, the store’s offerings are largely similar to what you’d find at major local retailers (many shoppers have compared it to Game of Makro who are also part of the Massmart Group), with only a small section dedicated to imported items, mainly cereals, sweets, and a few novelty treats. What does stand out is the fresh food section, which includes halaal-certified meat options, as well as a hot kitchen for ready-made meals, making it a practical stop for everyday shopping. The new store is also rolling out a 60-minute delivery service around the area via the brand’s dedicated Africa app, adding a new layer of convenience for local shoppers (YAY!)  In a landscape dominated by familiar names, Walmart’s arrival adds welcome competition to Joburg’s retail scene. For shoppers, another strong contender on the floor can only be a good thing.   After months of speculation following Massmart’s announcement that international retail giant Walmart would be opening its first store in South Africa, it’s finally official – the very first Walmart store will open at
Black Friday 2025: Where to find the best deals in Johannesburg

Black Friday 2025: Where to find the best deals in Johannesburg

Black Friday is South Africa's largest single shopping event, and in the retail capital of Johannesburg, the savings are expected to be substantial. With retailers starting their promotions earlier than ever, turning the event into a "Black November", shoppers in Joburg need a strategic plan to navigate the deals, both in-store and online. This year, the focus is split between massive discounts on high-ticket tech and appliance items and aggressive deals on everyday essentials like groceries, health, and beauty products, reflecting the smart-shopping mindset of the Joburg consumer.   The Black Friday battlegrounds: which malls will deliver the best deals? For Joburg shoppers planning to brave the crowds, choosing the right mall is key to securing the biggest deals. Mall of Africa in Midrand remains the undisputed champion for scale; due to its sheer size and concentration of major anchor and big-box retailers (like Game and Makro), it attracts the most intense vehicle traffic and delivers the deepest sales on high-volume tech, appliances, and lifestyle goods. Prepare for crowds, but expect savings that are worth the effort, especially since some previous years have featured discounted parking incentives. Meanwhile, in the northern suburbs, Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square dominate the high-end sector. These centres often offer strategic perks, such as all-day free parking on Black Friday, making them highly accessible for those targeting luxury fashion, premium beauty,
Walk through time: Why the Melville Koppies guided hike is a Joburg must-do

Walk through time: Why the Melville Koppies guided hike is a Joburg must-do

On the last Sunday of every month, just as Joburg’s early light hits the ridges, a group of hikers gather at the edge of Melville Koppies. Some are regulars who treat it as a monthly ritual, others are first-timers who’ve finally been persuaded to see what all the fuss is about. But by the end of the 8km guided hike, everyone is part of the same dusty, exhilarated tribe. “It gives people the chance to slow down time,” says long-time volunteer Jenny Grice. She’s part of the team that leads these much-loved walks, which take hikers straight up to the top of the Koppies before meandering into Melville Koppies East. The inclines are gentle but deceptive, the paths are rocky, and the views, well, the views are the kind you don’t expect to find in the middle of a city. Grasslands ripple into rocky ridges and riverine forest, and at every turn, Joburg’s skyline surprises you from both north and south. The guided hike (next one: 30 November) offers something rare in the city: the chance to walk far, safely, and without worrying about taking a wrong turn. If the full 8km feels daunting, you can duck out halfway, no judgment, just fresh air and freedom. But Melville Koppies is more than a monthly endurance fix. It’s a sanctuary, a nature reserve tucked quietly into the urban jungle, and one of Joburg’s most astonishing open secrets. “You don’t have to live in Joburg for 30 years before visiting,” Jenny says. And you should, because the land itself tells stories older than imagination.
Joburg braces for traffic delays as final G20 delegates depart

Joburg braces for traffic delays as final G20 delegates depart

Johannesburg motorists are in for yet another day of heavy disruptions as the final G20 delegations depart the city.  The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued renewed warnings of rolling closures, standstill traffic, and major delays across the province, particularly on routes leading to the city's airports. According to the JMPD, highways and major arterials will shut down intermittently to allow convoys through, causing sudden standstill traffic that may last between 30 and 60 minutes at a time. Thunderstorms could make things worse Severe thunderstorm alerts are in place for Gauteng, with forecasts of heavy rain, slippery roads, and reduced visibility. With the city's traffic network already under strain from G20 pressure, even a minor collision could trigger major gridlock. The JMPD is urging motorists to keep headlights on, maintain safe following distances, and allow extra travel time throughout the day. Routes to avoid Expect ongoing disruptions along Grayston Drive, Rivonia Road, Maude Street, Oxford Road, and Jan Smuts Avenue, as dignitaries move between summit accommodation hubs.  The JMPD advises avoiding the N1, M1, N12, R21, and R24 where possible. Suggested alternatives include: Roodepoort: Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road, or Ontdekkers Road Sandton/North: Side streets running parallel to Rivonia and Oxford (still busy, but moving) South: Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, or Soweto Highway (where open) to steer clear of t

Bok star's new flame: Ox Nché launches The Braai Republic in Northgate

Johannesburg just got a new flame to gather around. The Braai Republic, a proudly South African fast-food concept backed by Springbok star Retshegofaditswe "Ox" Nché, has officially opened its first store at Northgate Mall, aiming to transform the country's favourite tradition into a national franchise movement. According to BusinessTech, the Northgate launch on 20 November marks the beginning of a rollout that aims to take the brand across SA, bringing braai culture into the fast-casual spotlight. A fast-food braai that actually tastes like a braai In a market crammed with global chains, The Braai Republic leans into what sets South Africa apart: meat on the bone, flame-grilled over open fire, served with sides that are both convenient and authentic. The menu offers a variety of cuts, including brisket, chuck, beef short rib, pork ribs, T-bone, boerewors, and chicken, paired with traditional favourites like hand-cut slap chips, creamy pap, chakalekker, salads, and shebo, all prepared fresh on site. It's fast food, yes, but it's also familiar, nostalgic, and deeply Joburg. Ox Nché brings Bok star power to the grill As reported by IOL (Daily News), Retshegofaditswe "Ox" Nché isn't just the face of the brand; he is a partner involved in menu development, testing new dishes, and long-term strategy. He plans to open his own Braai Republic branch soon and says the concept works because braai culture is one of the few things that unites South Africans across backgrounds and generat
Is Joburg becoming a 15-Minute City?

Is Joburg becoming a 15-Minute City?

If you’ve ever spent half your day crawling along Winnie Mandela Drive or the M1, you’ve probably wondered: Is this really how city life is supposed to work? As Joburg shifts towards hybrid work and suburban hubs start buzzing like mini city centres, we might finally be heading towards something better: the rise of the 15-minute city.  The idea, popularised by French urbanist Carlos Moreno, is simple: everything you need (work, food, fitness, childcare, errands, downtime) should be within a 15-minute walk of home. Paris made it famous. But Joburg, with its scattered nodes and endless commute culture, might be the city that needs it most. Paul Keursten, CEO of Workshop17, puts it bluntly, “We burn hours in gridlock commutes to sit in offices in congested business districts, trading time, well-being, and productivity in the process.” Hybrid work cracked open the door to a different way of living, one where your office isn’t a destination, but part of the rhythm of your day. And Jozi’s neighbourhoods are responding. Rosebank, Linden, Melrose Arch, Dunkeld, Bryanston, Fourways, and Hyde Park are evolving into micro-cities where you can grab coffee, work, train, shop, run errands, and meet friends without crossing half the province. Co-working spaces in these areas aren’t just offices, they’re anchors for a more liveable lifestyle. As Keursten explains, “The 15-Minute City proposes distributing the infrastructure of daily life more evenly across urban areas, creating multiple cent
A day without women: Johannesburg shuts down to spotlight GBV

A day without women: Johannesburg shuts down to spotlight GBV

If the streets of Johannesburg seem eerily quiet today, it's because the city is participating in the nationwide G20 Women's Shutdown, championed by the local activist group Women for Change. The shutdown, which is taking place as South Africa prepares to host the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, is a powerful act of protest against the country's ongoing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) crisis. The movement asks women and members of the LGBTQI+ community to step back from both paid and unpaid labour for the day, halt all spending, and make visible the economic and social impact of a country where an estimated 15 women are murdered every day. The central call is for the government to declare GBV a national disaster officially. How to participate in the shutdown The "Women's Shutdown" is conceptualised as a withdrawal from economic activity rather than a traditional march, allowing for participation across all communities and circumstances. Women for Change has outlined several key ways for women and members of the LGBTQI+ community to take part: Withdraw Labour: Refrain from all paid and unpaid work (including domestic labour) for the day. Participants are encouraged to take leave from work or university. Economic Boycott: Refrain from spending money for the entire day to highlight women's financial contributions and the impact of their absence. The 15-Minute Silent Standstill: At 12:00 PM (noon) SAST, all participants will lie down in silence for 15 minutes to honour th
