The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

The 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.  On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity f

Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. The pace of Joburg is like pure adrenaline; it is fast, exhilarating, and full of possibilities. For television personality and PR co-founder Lee-Roy Wright, it’s this energy that fuels both his career and his creativity. “Johannesburg has become the city where I thrive,” he says. “It gave me the opportunity to start my television career, it’s where I discovered the beauty of radio, and it sets the tone for my PR company, The Platinum Club.” Having traded the quiet streets of Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape for the hustle of the City of Gold, Lee-Roy has fully embraced Joburg life, from its entertainment and media opportunities to its underrated gems. (Case in point: he swears by Gold Reef City, a place he says locals take for granted but shouldn’t.) He describes the city as a smaller-scale New York, a place where the hustle is real and the odds are stacked high, but where resilience is forged in the grind. What many locals overlook, he says, are Joburg’s greatest treasures: its people and its food, especially the snacks, which he swears are some of the best in the world. It’s this mix of grit and flavour that keeps him rooted here, and that continues to shape the stories he tells on screen. The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Why tourism matters in South Africa: From wildlife to city life

Why tourism matters in South Africa: From wildlife to city life

Tourism is one of South Africa’s most powerful industries. It drives economic growth, creates jobs, and sustains conservation efforts that protect the country’s extraordinary natural heritage. This Tourism Month is a chance to reflect on how domestic and international travel supports wildlife, communities, and unique experiences across the country. For Shandor Larenty, Group Wildlife and Conservation Manager at the Lion & Safari Park in Johannesburg, tourism is about more than sightseeing. “Tourism Month is a reminder of how important travel and experiences are, not only for the economy but also for cultural exchange,” he says. “For South Africa, it’s a chance to highlight our diversity, wildlife, landscapes, communities, and to show that tourism supports conservation, creates jobs, and sustains entire industries.” From safaris to city life Larenty notes that perceptions of South Africa are shifting. “It’s no longer just a safari stop. People are realising it’s a destination where wildlife, culture, food, and modern city life all come together.” Tourists don’t have to travel far to enjoy authentic wildlife experiences. “Visitors can connect with nature even just outside Johannesburg,” Larenty explains. “The city becomes not just a business and cultural hub, but also the start of their wildlife journey.” Conservation through connection Close encounters with lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and hyenas have a bigger purpose: conservation. Tourism directly funds animal care, habitat ma
Locals spill the tea on what makes Linden so special

Locals spill the tea on what makes Linden so special

Johannesburg is buzzing with neighbourhoods that have their own personality, but Linden stands out for its mix of charm, creativity, and community spirit. Recently named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world, we asked people who live and work in the area what makes Linden so special, and their answers painted a picture of a suburb that feels more like a village. “It captures the true essence of a quiet community,” said one local. “Yes, it’s residential, but it’s also got amazing spots that accommodate everyone,  whether you’re looking for great cuisine, somewhere to relax, or just a place to have a good time.” That balance between calm and vibrancy is part of Linden’s magic. “It’s the most wonderful mixture of coffee shops, studios, designers, students, pensioners, school-going kids, and everyone in between,” another resident told us. “It’s just a lovely snapshot of what South Africa is.” There’s also a welcoming, neighbourly feel. “You find a mix of cultures here, and everyone has a friendly attitude towards you,” said one person. “There’s always something happening: families out running together, kids grabbing ice creams at Kevin’s (FAB Diner), and people enjoying the streets. It’s peaceful, it’s safe, and it’s got a really good vibe.” For many, Linden’s independent spirit is what makes it shine. Kathy, who runs Potted Glass Studio, loves the fact that “there are very few franchises here. Every store is generally owned by the person you talk to, so there’s a vested
Young Johannesburg photographers take their city to the world stage

Young Johannesburg photographers take their city to the world stage

From the township streets of Thokoza to the walls of European galleries, six young South African photographers are putting Johannesburg’s art scene on the global map. Their raw, powerful, and deeply personal work captures the city’s resilience, beauty, and contradictions, and now it’s being showcased to international audiences. These rising talents are all part of Of Soul and Joy (OSJ), a Thokoza-based mentorship project by Rubis MĂ©cĂ©nat and Easigas. Since 2012, OSJ has been helping young South Africans use photography as a tool for storytelling, self-expression, and social change. Now, the world is taking notice. Mireille ROOBAERT Johannesburg photography showcased in Brussels Until 21 December 2025, Fondation A in Brussels is hosting What’s the Word? Johannesburg!, an exhibition curated by Emilie Demon of Afronova Gallery. The show features six OSJ photographers – Sibusiso Bheka, Jabulani Dhlamini, Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo, Vuyo Mabheka, Xolani Ngubeni, and Zwelibanzi Zwane – each presenting their vision of the city through their lenses. The exhibition draws inspiration from Gil Scott-Heron’s 1975 protest anthem Johannesburg, weaving together themes of identity, resilience, love, fatherhood, and the silenced voices of marginalised communities. The result? A visual story that captures Joburg's beauty and complexity and shares it with the world. Joburg's Linden makes the list for coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025

Big news for one of Joburg’s most charming suburbs: Linden has snagged the #17 spot on Time Out’s Global list of the Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World in 2025. Out of 39 neighbourhoods worldwide, Linden is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Leafy, laid-back and quietly cool, Linden is where old-school charm meets creative energy. What was once a sleepy suburb has transformed into a hub of artisan cafĂ©s, quirky boutiques, speciality coffee bars, and vibrant little eateries that make you want to linger. How Time Out picks the Coolest Neighbourhoods Each year, Time Out’s global team of writers and editors weighs in on the vibiest districts in their cities. Nominations are ranked against a mix of factors: food, drink, nightlife, culture, community, and that hard-to-define sense of “nowness”. The result is a list of neighbourhoods that aren’t just pretty, they’re shaping urban life and offering a real slice of what makes their city tick. Why Linden shines Often overshadowed by Johannesburg’s flashier suburbs, Linden is finally having its moment. And the magic? It’s in the people and that deep-rooted sense of community. Friendly cafĂ©s like The Whippet and Yield Coffee Bar, bakeries serving up artisan treats, and standout restaurants like Gaucho and Brian Lara Rum Eatery bring the flavour. Boutique shops, co-op gift stores, art spaces and the vibrant Linden Market showcase the suburb’s creative energy. It’s a neighbourhood where authenticity, culture, food and lifestyle

Ticketpro then deleted the post and created a new one with an image of the stadium (we're seeing a trend here). Either way, with both Ticketpro and Monyake Group tagged in the post, we’re hopeful that this concert is the real deal and that Jozi will get to witness history. About the venue Ellis Park Stadium, also known as Emirates Airline Park, is a historic Johannesburg landmark in the heart of Doornfontein.
