Summer is upon us and the sun is out. Not only is this good for your health, as Vitamin D strengthens your bones and boosts immune health, but it also means you can be outside in nature.

Because berries are seasonal, farms that specialise in blueberries and other berry variations are open to the public in the first quarter of the year.

Here are some of the berry farms in Johannesburg that are usually closed during the colder winter months, but come summer, they invite guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of their facilities while also engaging in fun activities.

The Cradle Berry Farm

  • When: Tuesday to Sunday until December
  • Cost: From R70 on Quicket

From September to December every year, the Cradle Berry Farm in Muldersdrift is open for visitors to pluck the sweetest strawberries straight from the soil. The farm prides itself on the fact that its fruit does not come into contact with herbicides or pesticides, making the strawberries safe for the whole family.

At The Cradle Berry Farm the kids can nibble on the berries they picked while running around the designated play area.

To get the most out of the freshness, visitors can dig into the strawberries immediately after picking them. The farm also hosts wedding and corporate events, with on-site accommodation just a stone’s throw from the Cradle of Humankind.

Tangaroa Strawberry Farm

  • When: Saturdays and Sundays until December
  • Cost: R100 for adults, R70 for children under 10 on site

Near the Hartbeespoort Dam, is where you can find the Tangaroa Strawberry Farm. Everything here is organically grown, so you won’t be the only visitor, as the farm is frequented by an influx of birds and other little creatures.

The Tangaroa Strawberry Farm even makes desserts like this with the berries directly from the farm.

The fruit is not the only attraction at Tangaroa. Given the time of year, sweet peas and poppies are already blooming, and come November, the sunflowers too will make their bright presence felt. And yes, you can pick the flowers too! After all that "exercise", you can retire to the on-site spa, guest house or take advantage of their picnic facilities.

Mac Fresh Deli & Berry Farm

  • When: Friday to Sunday, all year round
  • Cost: Free entrance, pay for what you pick based on weight

If you’re in Johannesburg East, there’s no need to travel long distances because the Mac Fresh Deli & Berry Farm in Benoni is ready with its ripe blueberries and strawberries. Guests have the freedom to pick their own berries, which the staff will then help to weigh.

All that walking and berry picking can work up an appetite but Mac Fresh Deli & Berry Farm has. more than enough to fill you up.
