Joburgers woke up to a chilly Thursday morning, but temperatures are set to drop even further as the day unfolds. Gauteng Weather took to social media to alert residents that the coldest night of 2026 so far will occur on Thursday, 07 May.

Johannesburg is expected to drop to 5°C, while Pretoria will see temperatures of around 7°C. Nearby Vereeniging is forecast to reach a low of 6°C.

While the chill may be biting, residents are encouraged to prepare rather than panic, especially because the countdown to winter has officially begun, with May marking the start of Johannesburg’s colder, drier season.

Time Out Tips For Going Out

While residents of Johannesburg are known for embracing the sunshine and an active social lifestyle, a dip in temperature is unlikely to keep them indoors. Cold or not, the city’s vibrant spirit means people will still find ways to get out, stay warm, and enjoy themselves.

Dress warmly, especially for those commuting or spending time outdoors. Warm clothes help you maintain your body temperature and prevent rapid heat loss from cold and wind. Exposure to such cold conditions without dressing properly can lead to dangerous health conditions like hypothermia.

Use blankets and throws to keep yourself warm without sacrificing style. There are plenty of nice throw blankets that can complement your outfit while keeping you cosy.

Indulge in hearty dishes and comforting drinks. Johannesburg’s vibrant dining scene offers plenty of cosy spots where diners can enjoy warm meals and hot beverages. Some restaurants across Johannesburg have already introduced winter menus, making it a great time to explore and experience what they have to offer.

For those yet to update their wardrobes, retailers across the city are rolling out winter fashion collections. From coats and scarves to stylish layered looks, now is the perfect time to stock up and stay warm while embracing the season in style.
