Sweet toothed South Africans welcomed an establishment that specialises in pastel de nata (pastéis de nata) four years ago and have never looked back. Pastel de nata is a traditional Portuguese tart featuring a caramelized custard nestled inside a crispy puff pastry shell.

The pastel de nata secured a commendable second place in the world’s 100 best desserts by TasteAtlas and to celebrate this achievement, Casa das Natas (which loosely translates to House of Cream) is introducing three new flavours today.

The dessert spot was founded by Raul Lima (managing director of The Troyeville Hotel), Fernando Duarte and Robbie Brozin (co-founder of Nando's) in 2022 and this year they are expanding their South African infused offerings.

Lisbon baker, João Batalha gave the establishment its original flavours, making him the right man to give the brand’s natas that extra layer of perfection.

The new treats

At just R27, the crème brûlée’s centre is caramelised right in front of the customer, turning the simple preparation into a live performance. Witnessing the art of making the dessert’s satisfying crack is a memory that the customers will carry for a long time.

The tiramisu is inspired by the iconic dessert from Italy and only costs R30. It blends a rich, creamy filling with coffee flavours to create a treat that’s derived from two European favourites.

This distinctive caramelised biscuit flavour retails for R30 and while it is plant based, its rich and indulgent textures deliver the exact same decadence as a traditional tart.
