The past weekend was filled with vibrant celebrations across the world as families honoured the women in their lives for Mother's Day. From thoughtful gifts to memorable outings, many went all out to show appreciation. In Johannesburg, one standout event brought together inspiration, healing, and community under one roof. Hosted by renowned chef and restaurateur Nozipho Mbathawho runs a home-style Izipho Functions establishment in Edenvale, the gathering was more than just a culinary experience. It was a carefully curated space designed to uplift, empower, and remind women, especially mothers, that they are not alone in their journeys.

The chef explained that while she is known for bringing people together through food, this event aimed to go beyond the plate. Her vision was to create a memorable experience where women could connect over shared struggles, triumphs, and the realities of motherhood. By inviting speakers from different walks of life, she ensured that a wide range of topics affecting women were addressed.

Among the speakers was Matlali Thipa, who spoke candidly about the emotional toll of a difficult divorce and the pain of losing custody of her children and her job. Her message centred on the power of hope, urging women never to lose sight of it. She shared about the importance of taking care of one's mental health and how, through the support of her mother in her darkest moments, she has now bounced back and regained most of the things she had lost.

Kholiwe Shange shared a deeply personal story of grief, recounting how she lost both her brother and sister in the same year. Her sister died of cancer. She also opened up about her own health scare when a lump was discovered in her body and how faith carried her through those challenges. She shared, with gratitude, that the lump has disappeared.

Leadership and purpose were at the heart of Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster's talk. She reflected on how her childhood dream of becoming President of South Africa shaped her journey, ultimately leading her into public service as a Member of Parliament. Her message encouraged women not to ignore the dreams planted within them from a young age.

Adding a musical and emotional touch to the day, Ntokozo Mbambo delivered a moving performance before sharing insights on love, family, and the influence of her mother. She credited her mother's guidance and example as instrumental in shaping both her personal life and successful career.

Professor Mlisana focused on the importance of self-respect, urging women to take themselves seriously and recognise their worth. Meanwhile, author and speaker Mantsha Pheeha shared her powerful journey of getting married at 42 and conceiving her first child at 46. Her story highlighted resilience and the strength to rise above life's obstacles.

Beyond the talks, attendees were also treated to wellness-focused experiences. Dr Pillay, a homoeopathic doctor at Midrand-based Holistiq Wellness House, offered free health consultations, while various entrepreneurs showcased natural products and services to promote well-being.

Of course, no event hosted by Chef Nozipho Mbatha would be complete without an exceptional culinary spread. Guests were welcomed with an array of finger foods, including wings, wraps, and refreshing drinks. The experience continued with a hearty and flavourful three-course meal that left attendees thoroughly satisfied.

From meaningful conversations to indulgent cuisine, the event delivered on every front. With a packed venue and an atmosphere filled with hope, resilience, and connection, it was truly an unforgettable Mother's Day celebration for Johannesburg's women.
