City of Johannesburg strengthens commitment to top-tier museums

Nothing quite compares to a visit to a museum, especially for those invested in understanding where we come from and the moments that have shaped who we are today. History cannot be overlooked, and museums offer a unique opportunity to see, experience, and engage with art and historical archives in meaningful, immersive ways.

Johannesburg is home to some of the country’s most significant art collections and historical archives, and the city continues to invest in preserving these cultural treasures for future generations. In a statement released on Monday, the City of Johannesburg confirmed that it is accelerating its upgrades across several museums to ensure they meet exceptional standards. It announced continued upgrades to Museum Africa and the adjacent Pink Building in Newtown. 

These sites are a big and crucial part of Johannesburg’s cultural landscape. Museum Africa, originally established in 1913 as a fruit and vegetable market on Lilian Ngoyi Street, has long been a cornerstone of the city’s historical narrative. Today, it houses collections of books and archival material documenting Johannesburg’s evolution. The Pink Building 

These developments highlight the importance of art and historical preservation in shaping a city’s identity.

In a statement released on the site, some of the key changes include:

• Installation of modern HVAC systems with real-time monitoring to regulate temperature and humidity in line with museum preservation standards;
• Comprehensive roof rehabilitation and waterproofing to prevent water ingress and strengthen the building envelope;
• Installation of new polycarbonate roof sheeting to improve insulation and durability;
• Ongoing installation of a new 1MVA transformer to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply;
• Upgraded security infrastructure, including CCTV surveillance, biometric and fingerprint access controls, reinforced access points, and 24-hour security presence;
• Gas-based fire suppression systems designed to protect artworks without the risk of water damage
• These interventions are not only critical to safeguarding valuable artworks but also represent a long-term investment in Johannesburg’s cultural infrastructure.

In March, the City announced that significant progress had been made in readying Museum Africa and the Pink Building to temporarily house the Johannesburg Art Gallery collection. This move aims to safeguard some of South Africa’s most valuable artworks while improvements are underway.

For Johannesburg residents, the upgrades promise renewed cultural spaces to explore, while visitors can look forward to richer, more immersive experiences. As Joburg continues to invest in its cultural infrastructure, it reinforces its position as a destination for arts and heritage in South Africa.
