This week the artistic community convenes for the third edition of Design Week South Africa, where exhibitions, studio and urban tours, installations and workshops cast the spotlight on Mzansi’s finest creativity.
Since its inauguration in 2024, Design Week South Africa has grown significantly. In the past two years, Design Week has attracted more than 7,000 industry professionals, collectors and design enthusiasts. This year’s Johannesburg leg kicks off on Thursday 8 October and runs until 11 October across Melville, Rosebank, Parktown North, Braamfontein and other parts of the city.
The proceedings commence with Creative Futures Africa: Beyond the Summit, hosted by Jozi My Jozi in partnership with Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) in Parktown North.
The various spheres of creativity that are part of Johannesburg’s vibrant energy, including music, fashion, food, heritage and art, will be on the agenda. The event is open to the public and is a continuation of discussions that began at the invitation-only Summit last month.
Some of the solutions that were proposed at the original summit for how African creativity can flourish included stronger policy and intellectual-property frameworks, better data and market access, creative infrastructure, and meaningful collaboration between the public sector, business, cultural institutions and communities.
Visitor and Creative Economy Catalyst at Jozi My Jozi, Dawn Robertson, said: “The Summit made a strong case for the practical systems that make creative work viable: investment, access, safe and connected cities, stronger partnerships and space for people to make, trade, perform and grow.”
On 9 October, the programme advances toward fashion intersections, guided walking tours and tactile craft. A clay workshop will also take place on Day 2, and later the Bioscope Independent Cinema at 44 Stanley will host film screenings.
Saturday features a walking history tour of the inner city as well as visual and audio exhibitions. On Sunday, Design Week culminates in panel discussions that transition toward a vinyl exhibition followed by a presentation from UManyano Lwe Jazz.
