A soulful new dining experience at Sanctuary Mandela invites Joburgers and global visitors to taste Nelson Mandela’s favourite meals hosted by his former chef, Mam’Xoli.

If you've ever wondered what it was like to sit at Nelson Mandela’s dinner table, now’s your chance. Sanctuary Mandela in Houghton has launched "Dine Like Madiba", an intimate culinary experience that honours the late South African icon through flavour, storytelling, and culture.

Set in Mandela’s former home, now a boutique hotel and heritage destination, "Dine Like Madiba" offers guests a unique chance to enjoy traditional South African dishes inspired by Madiba’s favourites, all served in the very space he once called home.

What to expect at Dine Like Madiba

This isn’t your average set menu. Each dish has been thoughtfully curated in collaboration with Chef Xoliswa Ndoyiya (affectionately known as Mam’Xoli), who served as Mandela’s personal chef for over 20 years. Today, she continues to guide the kitchen in an advisory role, ensuring every plate reflects the authenticity and heart of the meals she once prepared for Madiba himself.

Guests can look forward to a journey of storytelling and taste, with Mam’Xoli personally hosting the evenings, sharing memories and behind-the-scenes glimpses of Mandela’s life, from his quiet moments at home to his unwavering love for food as a symbol of unity.

“Food was Madiba’s way of expressing love and unity,” says Mam’Xoli. “Through these meals, we honour his memory and share the warmth and generosity he extended to all.”

On the menu

The curated set menu includes a rich variety of dishes rooted in South African and pan-African traditions:

Each course offers not just flavour, but a story linking guests to South Africa’s past while creating space for present-day connection.
