Tourists travelling from South Africa to Zambia will have another airline that can accommodate them from 1 February 2027, which means less stress about possibly not making it in time due to limited direct flights.
In response to the robust demand, Flysafair announced its new route between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) and Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, Zambia, on Friday 12 September.
For low prices starting from R2800, travellers can board a Flysafair flight on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Lusaka’s popularity has reportedly been growing very swiftly because of its cultural and wildlife offerings, and Flysafair’s chief marketing officer, Kirby Gordon, says the airline’s customers have constantly been asking about the SA to Zambia route.
“The Johannesburg–Lusaka corridor carries a significant mix of business and leisure travellers, as well as South Africans and Zambians travelling to see family and friends.
“We’re proud to bring our fares and our reliability to this route and to make the connection between our two countries more accessible than it has been,” he added.
Travellers can also explore Zambia’s artistry at 7D Gallery and the Kabwata Cultural Village, or trace the country’s history at the Lusaka National Museum where they can discover Zambian archaeology, contemporary art, traditional beliefs and colonial history.
Livingstone and Victoria Falls, the Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa National Parks are some of the offerings that can be accessed beyond the capital city of Lusaka.
Kirby says the airline is built on the principle that connecting South Africa with its neighbours should be affordable and not a luxury.
“When we launched Cape Town to Windhoek, we brought fares down significantly on that corridor, and we intend to do the same on Johannesburg to Lusaka. Zambia and South Africa have deep ties, and we're glad to make staying connected a little easier,” he said.
In addition to being a popular travel destination for leisure, this route is also important because Zambia is one of South Africa’s significant trade and investment partners because of its mining and telecommunications companies and pan-African development organisations.
