Animals are some of the most vulnerable creatures on earth, and often some of the most misunderstood too. Many people do not always realise that animals have emotions, behavioural needs, and require both mental and physical stimulation to thrive. That is why Johannesburg Zoo is embarking on a mission to help the public better understand what meaningful animal care truly looks like.

The popular zoo will host its Morning With an Enrichment Officer event on 6 June, offering visitors a closer look into the world of behavioural enrichment for animals. The educational experience is designed to help attendees understand how enrichment activities improve animal welfare and encourage natural behaviour.

According to information shared by the zoo on social media, the event will feature three key learning areas. Visitors will first discover why environmental enrichment is so important for animal welfare. They will then get the opportunity to build their own hands-on enrichment item before watching it come to life when it is presented to the animals. Guests will also have the chance to observe the animals engaging naturally with the enrichment tools.

The day promises to be more than just an entertaining outing. It is expected to be an educational and purposeful experience that encourages people to think differently about animal care and conservation. Enrichment officers, who are responsible for implementing and assessing stimulating activities for animals, will guide attendees through the process and explain why these activities are essential.

Whether you are passionate about wildlife, interested in learning something new, or hoping to teach your children about compassion and animal welfare, this event offers a meaningful experience for the whole family.

Johannesburg Zoo remains one of the city’s most loved attractions as the home to thousands of animals that are cared for daily. Beyond the animal encounters, visitors also enjoy the zoo’s greenery, natural surroundings, and family-friendly atmosphere.

Tickets for the enrichment event cost R325 per person. The experience is suitable for all ages.
