Bridge Books brings a unique celebration of Bloomsday to Johannesburg, honouring Irish literary icon James Joyce through multilingual readings, cultural conversations, and a distinctly South African experience.

June 16 is not only significant in South Africa’s history, but it is also an important date for the Irish community around the world. Every year, Irish people celebrate Bloomsday - an annual literary celebration dedicated to Ulysses, the groundbreaking novel written by James Joyce. The book, which follows a single day in Dublin, carries deep cultural and historical significance for Ireland.
This year, Bridge Books is bringing Bloomsday to Johannesburg with a uniquely South African twist through an event titled Bloomsday at Bridge. The celebration will feature readings from Ulysses in different languages, including isiZulu, creating a powerful fusion between Irish literary tradition and South African cultural identity.
The event will also feature conversations with South African authors Ivan Vladislavić and Terry-Ann Adams, who will unpack how literature can bring cities to life on the page.
Through the event, Bridge Books says it hopes to encourage deeper reflection on Johannesburg as a city worthy of literary focus.
"Joyce said about writing Ulysses, that he wanted to 'give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed,'" said Bridge Books in a statement.
The organisers explained that this vision aligns closely with their own vision: to view Johannesburg as 'complex, poetic and worthy of literary focus'.
Beyond the literary discussions and multilingual readings, the event promises a vibrant cultural experience. Guests can look forward to enjoying a harvest table feast, welcoming drinks, and panoramic views of Johannesburg from the newly renovated Barbican 10th-floor penthouse.
Anthony Akerman, a playwright and screenwriter, will also lead discussions around reading Ulysses in South Africa, adding another layer to the event’s storytelling and community.
What makes the celebration unique is that it also serves as a celebration of cultural exchange, bringing together Irish and South African traditions through books, conversation, food, and shared appreciation for the stories that shape cities and communities.
