Exciting news for book lovers, Johannesburg is about to get a brand-new community library.

Bridge Books, one of the city’s most beloved independent bookstores, has announced that it’s opening a container library in Victoria Yards - a vibrant arts and culture precinct in Johannesburg .

Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, owner Griffin Shea says residents in and around the area will be able to use the new space as soon as next month.

“The official launch is on the 4th of December,” he reveals.

According to Griffin, work is already underway at the site.

“The librarian has been busy getting things organised – covering books, shelving them properly, and sorting out all those details,” he says.

The new container library is being sponsored by Gearhouse, a state-of-the-art equipment and technical solutions company based near Victoria Yards.

“They’re a neighbourhood – just around the corner from Victoria Yards. They’re sponsoring the librarian, and there’s another group called Chabad House, which runs similar programmes in schools around the country,” Griffin explains.

Unlike other library projects previously run by Chabad House that focused mainly on schools, this one will cater to the broader community.

“What’s different about this one is that it’s the first time they’re doing a library meant to be more of a community space rather than being attached to a specific school,” he says.

The aim is for the library to become a vibrant hub for reading, learning, and local storytelling.

“We’re going to be working with after-school programmes in and around Victoria Yards, as well as nearby schools,” Griffin says. “It’s about creating a community hub that complements the great work already happening in the area.”

A big part of the library’s mission will be to showcase African writers.

“We’re creating a library space for kids who may not have access to one at school, and, as always with Bridge Books, there’s a big focus on African authors and developing programming around that,” Griffin adds.

Here’s to more learning!
