It’s Johannesburg Pride Month once again, and members of the LGBTQI+ community and their allies have a host of celebratory events in store for the entire duration of October.

Johannesburg Pride organisers Pride of Africa understood the “go big or go home” assignment, and their response is to weave dialogue, fashion and storytelling into the celebration of gay pride.
From rooftop cocktails to an inner-city party, an empowerment summit and an evening of queer creative expression at the Queer Met, the colourful community’s visibility is going to reverberate throughout Johannesburg.
Here are some of the pre-Joburg Pride events to add colour to your life ahead of the main affair:
There’s no better way to usher in Pride Month than with cocktails, especially given that this time of year is affectionately known as Queer Christmas. And so, in partnership with fluid nightlife and party brand Rush, Pride Africa is assembling the community on the rooftop at Level 3 on 3 October for a pink drink or three.
Because this venue is a feel-good, safe space, this event promises to set the tone for the month ahead, giving guests the opportunity to hang out with old friends while also making new connections.
Just seven days later on 10 October, the celebrations invade Johannesburg’s inner city at Carvo Lounge.
From midday until late, community members draped in the colour of peace, newness and calm will convene for a joyous occasion that everyone can be proud of.
Taking the celebrations straight into the heart of the city is also symbolic of inclusion and visibility.
Things take a bit of a serious turn on 16 October with the Pride of Africa Empowerment Summit at the Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City in Midrand.
Youth challenges and conversations about the lives, ambitions and opportunities of LGBTQ+ people take centre stage, with dialogue being central to the event.
Identity, inclusion and leadership will be dissected by knowledgeable panellists who will also cast their lens on the barriers that queer people navigate in their daily lives.
This year’s The Queer Met theme is African Archives. The self-explanatory initiative integrates African creativity and queer expression with the kind of storytelling that has the power to unite.
This segment of Joburg Pride is also an opportunity to network with community leaders and cultural workers while enjoying a curated tasting menu accompanied by fashion and live performances.
The main Joburg Pride event takes place on 31 October, and more details will be shared in due course.
