Youth Month shines a spotlight on Irfan Genc (23), whose passion for baking has helped him build a thriving business while challenging stereotypes about autism.

The month of June shines a spotlight on the youth of 1976 who, through resilience, determination, and sacrifice, played a role in ensuring that South Africa enjoys the freedom it has today.
It is also a time to celebrate the spirit of young people and their ability to break boundaries, pursue their dreams, and even change the course of history.
One of the biggest challenges society often faces is access to health and the barriers that certain conditions can create. Depending on the environment in which a person grows up, health challenges can sometimes limit opportunities. However, as South Africa celebrates Youth Month, one young man from Johannesburg is proving that no obstacle should stand in the way of achieving one’s dreams.
Twenty-three-year-old Irfan Genc, founder of Irfan Delights, is one of the inspiring young entrepreneurs Johannesburg has produced.
Known for his delicious baked treats, Irfan creates a wide range of products, including Sauf and Nut Rusks, Gulab Jamun and Choc Chip Rusks, Pecan Puffs, Chocolate Baklava, Jam and Chocolate Tart Pastries, Koeksisters, Nutella Brownie Cake, and many other baked goods.
One of the obstacles he has had to overcome is autism. Despite the challenges he has faced, Irfan has risen above societal stigmas and built a thriving business.
The 23-year-old started the business during the COVID-19 lockdown. His mother, who is immensely proud of her son, told Time Out Johannesburg:
“I noticed his talent during lockdown when he asked me to teach him how to make desserts. I saw that he was super talented, and then we decided to start a home business.”
The family began by selling tiramisu, which quickly became a hit and remains one of their best-selling products today.
Irfan says baking is something he genuinely loves.
“I love baking a lot, and I also cook,” he says with a smile.
The young entrepreneur says the business has taught him that nothing should be impossible for him. Looking ahead, he has ambitious plans for the future.
“I want to open a coffee shop in Turkey, run businesses, and make lots of money,” he tells Time Out Johannesburg.
His baked treats have earned him trading opportunities at several markets across Johannesburg. He currently trades at the Melville Market, the Tshepo Northcliff Community Market, and regularly at Oriental Plaza.
His mother says the family has been actively involved in marketing the business and helping him build a loyal customer base.
“He is so super confident. If he wants to do something, he’s going to go out and do it,” says the mom.
The family also shares that many of their recipes come from Irfan’s late grandmother, making the business a true family venture. Every member of the family, including his mother and father, plays a role in supporting the enterprise.
Irfan says Johannesburg residents have shown tremendous love for his desserts and baked goods. What makes his products particularly special is that they are not sourced elsewhere. Every item is made from scratch at home, ensuring freshness and giving customers confidence in exactly what they are eating.
In a market filled with mass-produced foods, that personal touch has become one of the key ingredients behind Irfan Delights’ success.
