From hand-crafted moon gates to authentic dining at the Dragon Bar, explore Johannesburg's gorgeous new permanent Chinese luxury hospitality space.

If you’ve spent any time exploring the entertainment hubs around Kempton Park, you know they tend to favour grand, high-energy spectacles. But a major new permanent opening at Emperors Palace is taking a completely different approach, trading flashy trends for transportive cultural luxury.
Enter the Jade Casino. Conceived as a multi-million-rand dedication to South Africa’s established Chinese community and the growing influx of global travellers arriving via nearby OR Tambo, this isn't your average commercial rollout.
I recently attended the launch, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.
While many local entertainment venues rely on superficial "themed" decor, for me, what sets the Jade Lounge apart, besides being Africa's first dedicated Chinese luxury baccarat lounge, is its pure material authenticity. Stepping through the hand-crafted traditional moon gate entrance, you’re instantly met with a space that feels entirely separated from the buzz of the East Rand.
Between the immersive koi pond floor projections, 3D wall sculptures, intricate bamboo ceilings, and traditional lattice screens, the atmosphere is utterly seamless. Backed by a curated soundtrack of traditional music and live cultural entertainment, the space's ambient theatre is so vivid that you could easily forget you are in Johannesburg altogether. Instead, it feels like you’re stepping into an exclusive, world-class boutique destination in Macau or Singapore.
For local foodies and design lovers, the biggest drawcard outside of the architecture is the introduction of the Dragon Bar and Dragon Bowl. Positioned as the hospitality anchors of the Jade Casino, these spaces offer authentic Chinese culinary experiences and curated cultural programming, such as traditional calligraphy showcases and live entertainment, that elevate the city's nightlife landscape.
One of my highlights is the high-end tea ceremonies, and of course, the onsite massage chairs to help take a load off.
This level of investment speaks directly to a community that has helped shape Johannesburg’s commercial and cultural landscape for well over a century. While the city’s contemporary "Chinatowns" in Cyrildene and Ferreirastown are famous hubs for local foodies, the history runs much deeper.
Early independent Chinese immigrants arrived on the Witwatersrand in the 1870s during the gold rush, establishing vibrant communities and cultural networks. For a city with such deep-seated diaspora roots, the emergence of a highly specific, culturally authentic sanctuary is less of a new trend and more of a long-overdue homage to the local community's sophisticated taste.
Sikhulile Dlamini, Tables Manager at Emperors Palace, shares this sentiment: "This space is personal to us," she says. "We have spent years building relationships with our patrons, understanding the culture, the ritual, and the level of service expected. This is our way of honouring that."
The Jade Casino operates 24/7 as a permanent fixture and will make an interesting addition to Gauteng's premium hospitality landscape, proving that true luxury lies in the details you can feel, rather than just look at.
