Langa Mavuso treated guests to an intimate evening of good food, fashion, friendship and an orgasmic musical experience at the launch of his album tour last Friday.

On Friday 2 October, a year after the launch of his album Therapy: The Other Side at the Market Theatre, Langa Mavuso invited guests to the unveiling of his album tour.
The venue, the ambiance and family
The evening started off with guests hanging out in the lawn area at the Kumalo Turpin Gallery, located inside Nine Yards in Parktown North, sipping drinks while conversing about hopes and dreams, life, work, relationships and debriefing the week that was.
I’ve been to this venue a few times before, but only Langa and Stella Artois could transform the dining hall into an intimate rendezvous resembling a wedding reception draped in the most daring shades of red that gave us Valentine’s Day nostalgia.
Before settling inside the hall, it was heartwarming to notice how the guests were a cocktail of media personalities, friends and family. The music industry also showed up for Langa and I spotted Manana, Pilani Bubu, Muneyi, Thando Zide and Zoë Modiga in the crowd.
And when we eventually moved inside, it became clear that the people’s love for the musician manifested through a venue that was filled beyond capacity, prompting our hosts to set up an additional seating area so that everyone could be accommodated because chasing guests away is very unAfrican.
10 Years of Langa Mavuso
We eventually moved inside the dining hall where we were welcomed with a leek and cheddar focaccia accompanied by a garlic tzatziki and Cape Malay hummus, courtesy of chef Eric Mphela.
“Where's my mom?” were Langa’s first words upon entering the venue, brightening the picture he painted during our interview last week where he shared a tear-jerking reflection of the love, support and kindness his parents had tirelessly showered him with.
After indulging in the coal-roasted beef fillet with broccoli and potato croquette, we discovered that the evening was more than just a continuation of Therapy: The Other Side.
It was a full-fledged recollection of Langa’s 10-year musical journey which has culminated in his first-ever South African Music Award (SAMA) victory. Therapy was nominated for Best R&B/Soul Album and Best Produced Album, and Langa walked away with the latter.
Why you should never miss the chance to experience Langa Mavuso live!
Langa was dressed in a milder suit when he first joined the guests, but when it was time to ascend the stage, he emerged in a bold red outfit that screamed, ‘The star is here!’
And what a star he is! The transformation from an emotive delivery of Love Six from his debut offering Liminal Sketches to an electrifying Dangerous was artistic genius.
Langa swiftly shifted from a performance that had us thinking he was about to break down, to the dance track where he shared a ‘dangerous’ moment with a fan, and at that point I understood why he had enjoyed career longevity.
A musically trained acquaintance once described Langa as one of the top three artists in this country who could perform to a piano. I'm not musically trained but the overall experience was one of those performances where each audience member felt like the artist was performing for them personally, as if there was no one else in the space.
Fans who have been calling for Langa to make a gospel song can take comfort in knowing he has at least made a gospel song. The deluxe album features his version of the popular hymn Imvuselelo Enkulu Iyeza.
I found it fitting that on the other side of therapy, Langa has found revival and the willpower to embrace change.

He was also joined on stage by his friend and long-time collaborator Khanyi Mkhize for their Mina Nawe duet which is on the deluxe album. With the unmistakable chemistry they delivered, it would be an injustice to their fans if they stopped making music together.
Langa’s deluxe album is due for release on 16 October.
