Millions of South Africans rely on their cars to get from point A to point B, and to legally drive on the road, a valid driver’s licence is essential. But one of the biggest frustrations for motorists over the years has been the lengthy process of licence renewal.

From standing in long queues to waiting weeks, and sometimes even a month, for a licence card to be ready for collection, the process has often left many drivers stressed and inconvenienced.

However, this could soon change.

The Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) recently revealed in its planned 2026/2027 strategy that the government aims to significantly reduce the turnaround time for driver’s licence renewals. In the coming years, motorists could potentially receive their renewed licence cards within just seven days.

This move is expected to improve efficiency and reduce the long waiting periods many South Africans currently experience.

Previously, it took around 23 working days for drivers to receive their renewed licence cards. That number has since improved slightly to about 21 working days, but the government’s long-term target is to reduce the waiting period to seven working days between the 2028/2029 financial years.

To achieve this, the department says it will need to modernise outdated systems and machinery, strengthen cybersecurity measures, and improve customer service processes.

The news follows earlier discussions around extending the validity period of driver’s licences. The government previously indicated that it is considering extending licence validity from the current five years to eight years.

What does this mean for Johannesburg drivers?

For motorists in Johannesburg, this is welcome news.

Johannesburg is one of the busiest cities in the country, with thousands of people relying on their vehicles daily to commute to work, run businesses, and travel across the city.

One of the biggest disadvantages of delayed licence renewals is that motorists can easily find themselves driving with expired licences while waiting for renewal cards to be issued. This becomes even more concerning with the implementation of the demerit system, which can result in penalties for non-compliance with road laws.

A faster turnaround time for licence renewals could therefore help drivers avoid unnecessary stress and remain compliant with the law.

In recent years, the department has also made efforts to improve motorists' convenience. Some services that were previously only available at licensing departments can now be accessed at selected retail outlets and service centres, helping reduce pressure on traditional licensing offices.

If the government successfully delivers on its seven-day target, it could mark a major improvement for South African motorists.
