Winter is almost here, bringing with it biting cold temperatures that are especially harsh for the city’s most vulnerable residents. For many people living on the streets or in informal settlements, staying warm can be a struggle. Blankets are not just a comfort but a necessity, and for some, they remain out of reach.

Mall of the South has joined forces with the SOJO Social Helping Hands Foundation to launch a heartfelt initiative to provide residents with blankets to keep them warm. The campaign encourages residents to come together and support one another during the colder months.

Taking to social media, the partners announced their ambitious goal: to collect 6,700 blankets that will be distributed to non-profit organisations through the Epic Foundation’s Charities4Change programme. The blanket drive officially kicked off on 5 May and will run until 18 July 2026.

Why this initiative is important for the city of Johannesburg

Johannesburg is home to both affluent suburbs and deeply underprivileged communities. While some residents enjoy the comforts of heated homes, others, such as the homeless, rely on cardboard and plastic to shield themselves from the cold. Unfortunately, these are often ineffective against harsh winter conditions.

From a health perspective, exposure to extreme cold can weaken the immune system, leaving individuals more susceptible to illness. Warmth, therefore, is not a luxury; it is essential for survival.

This is not the first time Mall of the South and SOJO have stepped up for the community. Over the years, both have been involved in various outreach programmes aimed at improving lives in the south of Johannesburg.

At its core, the SOJO Social Helping Hands Foundation is driven by a mission to create meaningful social impact through tangible action, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.

For Joburg residents looking to make a difference, this blanket drive offers a practical and impactful way to give back. It is also a reminder of what makes the city special: its people. Because in Jozi, caring for one another is what truly keeps the city warm.
