Metrobus has introduced a new payment method for its commuters.

The tap-in, tap-out system will charge consumers per kilometre travelled instead of the past practice of charging commuters a fee based on their destination area.

'Effective 1 July 2025, the Metrobus fare structure will change from a zonal fare structure to a distance-based fare structure through a Tap-In Tap-Out system. This fare structure will promote the important principle of correct value for service rendered,' states Metrobus.

The bus service will also operate using a contactless card payment method.

How it works:

- Commuters must register using the tap-in, tap-out system.

- They must then load money onto their cards.

- They must tap the card at the beginning of the journey.

- They must tap out at the end of the journey.

Metrobus will charge a penalty fee of R30 if consumers do not tap out at their destination point.

'Metrobus will introduce a Tap-In Tap-Out system to ensure accurate, distance-based for all commuters. Tap in when you board and tap out when you exit the bus. Failure to tap out will result in a penalty fare of R30, automatically charged to your travel card. The R30 is almost the maximum fare paid towards the longest distance the trip is covered,' states Metrobus.

Commuters who violate bus service policies will also face a penalty fee.

'A penalty fee of R200 will be charged for any infringements, including but not limited to fare evasion, adults tapping with pensioner or scholar cards, misconduct, or damage to property during transit, in the event the inspector finds you in a bus without a tag, and also your last transaction was a tap out meaning you did not tap in,' states Metrobus.

Metrobus says it remains committed to providing a safe, reliable, affordable, world-class public transport system.
