Looking for things to do in Johannesburg this weekend? We’ve got you!
We’re heading into the final stretch of August, and Johannesburg is showing no signs of slowing down. The weekend is here, so why not get out and do something? Whether that means catching some live entertainment, settling in for a long afternoon with friends or trying something new, there’s plenty to keep you occupied around the city. All that’s left to do is pick a plan and make the most of it.

Wrap up for the morning, but don’t worry about staying bundled up all day, things should warm up once the sun comes out. Johannesburg North
The Lion King

The Pride Lands are coming to Northcliff, with Reddford House putting its own spin on The Lion King. It's the same Lion King you know and love, complete with Simba, Mufasa, Scar, Timon, Pumbaa and plenty of sing along songs. There’s a little extra reason to celebrate too, the production marks Reddford House Northcliff’s 10th anniversary, with students from Grade 1 to Grade 12 coming together on stage. The result should be a lively, colourful take on a story that needs very little introduction.
Loyiso Gola Live

Get your weekend started with a night of comedy from Loyiso Gola. The comedian brings his observational style to Sandton for a two hour live show, drawing on the sharp wit that’s made him a familiar face on stage and on screen. Gola builds on his infamous exploration of how popular culture and media influence intersect with our lives which has always been central to his one man show.
House Naxiion

Four decades of South African house music are getting their own Saturday celebration at House Naxiion at Montecasino. Oskido, DJ Lamiez, DL Cleo and other industry heavyweights will be behind the decks, spinning different generations of the genre. The music starts in the morning and keeps going late in the night, taking things from daytime grooves to an evening dancefloor. If house classics get you moving, this one should be on your weekend list.
Afrobiza Music Festival

Ready for an Ibiza-inspired day out? Afrobiza takes over Sandton with Afro-house, deep house and electronic beats from afternoon into the night. Expect live sets by Sun El Musician, NaakMusiq, Cisco de Sol who bring plenty of dancefloor energy to the event.
Tribute to Women 2026

Women’s Month comes to a close with Tribute to Women 2026, a day of live music and celebration at Marks Park. Mafikizolo, Nomfundo Moh, Msaki, Busiswa and Sjava are among the acts taking to the stage, making this one for fans of South African music. Camp chairs, refreshments and picnic blankets are allowed.
The BMW Art Generation Vol. IV

Make a weekend of art at the fourth edition of the The BMW Art Generation, bringing a mix of African art, music and culture to Parktown North. Across the two days, you can dip into exhibitions, join conversations and walkabouts, and catch live performances by Thando Zide on Saturday and Nduduzo Makhathini on Sunday.

Oakfields College – A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The Musical

If you like your Shakespeare with a side of song and dance, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is getting the musical treatment at the Lesedi Theatre this weekend. The story has all the usual ingredients: an enchanted forest, meddling fairies, tangled romances and plenty of confusion, with Oakfields students taking the stage. Directors Tracey Human and Dale Ray infuse music, movement for a fresh take on the classic.
Herbie Tsoaeli Live at Jozi Gold Brewing Company

Herbie Tsoeali heads to Jozi Gold this Saturday for an evening of live jazz from one of South Africa’s respected bassists and composers. Affectionately known as “Malume”, Tsoaeli has spent decades shaping his place in South African jazz. His debut album African Time, went on to win the SAMA for Best Jazz Album in 2013. The show wraps up Jozi Gold’s August jazz series, following performances by Abathwebuli Trio and Louis Mhlanga, and keeps things close and intimate. If you prefer your evenings with great music and a more intimate atmosphere, this is one to linger over.

Orlando Pirates vs Sekhukhune United

It’s second-leg time in the MTN8 semi-final, with Orlando Pirates taking on Sekhukhune United at Orlando Amstel Arena. The Buccaneers have a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg, setting up a second leg with plenty to play for as both teams chase a place in the final. For football fans, it’s a chance to catch some proper cup football and soak up the atmosphere. With a place in the final on the line, expect the takes and the noise from the stands to be high.
Beyond Jozi
Festival of Motoring 2026

- Location: Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre

If you’re a petrol head, make a beeline for Kyalami this weekend as the Festival of Motoring returns for three days of racing, displays and hands-on driving experiences. There’ll be more than 20 car brands on show, along with new model launches, passenger hot laps, performance car experiences and 4x4 activities. There’s something for more than just the serious car enthusiasts, with food stalls and family-friendly entertainment rounding out the day.
