Hook, Wendy, and plenty of pixie dust: Here is why Peter Pan Jr. is the must-see family show in Johannesburg this winter.

Dust off your fairy dust and think happy thoughts! Peoples Theatre has officially announced its mid-year headliner, and it’s a big one. For the first time in over a decade, the boy who wouldn’t grow up is returning to the Braamfontein stage in a brand-new production of Peter Pan Jr.
Running from 9 June to 26 July 2026, this isn’t just any revival. Director Jill Girard is bringing the updated Broadway version of the J.M. Barrie classic to South African audiences for the first time, promising a fresh, high-flying experience for a new generation.
While Peter Pan first flew onto the scene in 1904, its themes of eternal youth and escapism feel more relevant than ever (especially after watching Michael last night and seeing how deeply this story resonated with the King of Pop). This production leans into the immersive, participatory magic for which Peoples Theatre is famous.
According to Jill, we can expect a polished, fast-paced script that keeps even the youngest viewers glued to their seats, plus a visual spectacle. With set design by Grant Knottenbelt and costumes by Luciano Zuppa, Neverland is set to look more vibrant than ever.
“We haven’t staged Peter Pan at Peoples Theatre for over a decade,” says director Jill Girard. “It’s a wonderful ‘first’ for not only the youngsters who come watch, but their parents too.”
Whether you’re looking for a school holiday outing or a weekend treat, here is everything you need to know to secure your spot in Neverland.
Don’t wait until the crocodile starts ticking (see what we did there), bookings are open now, and these seats tend to fly as fast as Peter himself.
Time Out Tip: If you have little theatre-lovers in the house, joining the Peoples Theatre Kids’ Club (R155/year) is a no-brainer. It nets you discounted tickets and a free show during their birthday month.
