Last weekend Time Out readers raised the alarm about the overnight Halloween Paranormal Investigation, allegedly hosted by Beyond the Veil.
Listings on Quicket claimed that the event would be held at the abandoned Old Kempton Park Hospital. After having purchased tickets to the event, attendees were met with security staff at the venue who were allegedly not aware of the event.
“The entire event was a scam. We booked tickets for R350 each and when we arrived at the venue, the security guards had no idea about the event,” one reader wrote in our DMs.
Another reader relayed a similar story, and also alleged that the security guards at the venue may have even requested a bribe.
Upon further investigation, Time Out uncovered that Beyond the Veil is a UK based entity and the Kempton Park event was organised by a Germiston based South African couple.
The number listed on the poster as their WhatsApp contact is not registered on the app, and does not go through when dialed directly. Time Out also attempted to contact the organisers on a number listed on a poster for a different event, which was also posted on their profile.
The second number is registered on WhatsApp, however it rings unanswered and communication sent by the publication had not yet received any response by the time of publication. This number too is inactive for calls.
Time Out also contacted Quicket to alert them to the alleged scam.
“We have not heard from the organiser but we are investigating what transpired and will resolve this as soon as possible. If our investigation concludes that the event was fraudulent, we will refund all orders and notify all ticket buyers. We have also banned the organiser from using the platform for future events,” said the ticket platform.
Quicket has also committed to refunding ticket buyers.
