The fashion industry in South Africa is widely criticised, especially at award shows where local designers and celebrities are often called out for not knowing what they are doing. However, South African Fashion Week (SAFW) at The Forum at Hyde Park Corner proved that there is so much passion and creativity in the local fashion scene.

The week’s theme was ‘Wear what’s in your wardrobe’, and the celebrities did indeed show up. We spotted quite a few household names including Thando Thabethe, former Miss SA Lalela Mswane, reality TV stars Ashley Nicole and Yolanda, as well as artists Bontle Smith and Maglera Doe Boy. Designers Mzukisi Mbane of Imprint ZA and Jacques Bam of the Bam Collective were also among us.

Bubbles sponsored by J.C. Le Roux ensured that the guests were in the right mood, making the experience even more pleasant. Naturally, we got to have front-row seats to several shows and here’s how it went:

Day 1

The first night of fashion kicked off with the David Tlale show on 20 October 2026, held offsite at the Johannesburg City Library in the Joburg CBD. Marking his return to SA Fashion Week after 23 years, this clearly set the tone for the rest of the week.

Day 2

The Pierre Cardin (PC) show was far more than a runway presentation; it also marked the official launch of the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award (PCYDA) in South Africa.

This exciting initiative connects local creators with top international fashion houses by offering one talented South African designer a three-month internship at PC’s studio in Paris. It’s an incredible opportunity that bridges African creativity with world-class couture.

Day 3

We attended multiple shows on this day, which kicked off with the New Talent Search 2026 powered by J.C. Le Roux. Once again, it highlighted the raw talent young creatives hold in the industry. From fun, bold and colourful designs to streetwear looks, the jam-packed show was hosted by Maps Maponyane.

The winner was Michael Peter Reid for his collection, Commitment Issues.

“To be honest, I created this collection in a way that I’ve never created before. Instead of starting with the consumer I started with emotions and feelings. I went inside,” Michael shared in his acceptance speech.

Right after that, Black Coffee (the fashion brand, not the DJ) collaborated with Joburg Ballet in a show to remember. Unlike the usual runway where models walk the ramp, the dancers wore the designs and performed a beautifully choreographed piece led by internationally acclaimed ballerina Kitty Phetla.

To top it off, legendary musician Selaelo Selota showcased his streetwear brand, THRRR…PHAAA!

Day 4

This showcase featured multiple collections from Colleen Eitzen, Irene Makhavhu Designs and Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs. What particularly stuck with me about Fundudzi was that the garments were made from fabric offcuts and leftover materials from his storeroom. He also had models change on stage, transforming one look into a completely different style right in front of the audience. I had never seen that done before. Much like Black Coffee’s performance, it left a lasting impression because it was so delightfully different.

Day 5

One of the most talked-about shows that also left sports fans thrilled was the From Field to Fashion collection.

Orlando Pirates became the first PSL club to ever participate in SAFW. The collection was a collaboration between David Tlale, Nao Serati, Good Good Good and Yona. What made it extra special was that the players themselves walked the ramp!

Day 6

Gert-Johan Coetzee closed the week with a bang. His Reflections collection explored various themes, from eveningwear and street style to bridal couture. We have always known that Gert-Johan Coetzee is 'The GOAT' (greatest of all time), but in my honest opinion, this collection may be the best I have ever seen from him.

Famous for his intricate beadwork and structural silhouettes, this showcase delivered all that and more. The bridal line made me wish I could be a 2027 bride myself, especially with its showstopper gown inspired by melting candles, complete with subtle light accents and textured fabrics that beautifully mimicked flowing wax. It was a true masterclass in creativity and innovation!
