Soweto is gearing up to relive the fire and spirit of 1976, not just by looking back, but by bringing it to life through movement, music, and youth-led energy. From 14 to 16 June, the Soweto Theatre precinct will be transformed into a living, breathing tribute to the past, present and future of youth resistance, as the iconic protest musical Sarafina! takes centre stage in a powerful three-day celebration.
This year marks 49 years since the June 16 Uprising, when students took to the streets in defiance of apartheid’s oppressive education system. As we approach the 50th anniversary, this year’s Youth Month is more than a commemoration; it’s a call to action, and Soweto is answering.
The line-up is a blend of activism, creativity and community. Expect youth-led workshops, open-air art installations, live Amapiano sets, film screenings, storytelling, dance, and of course, a full concert version of Sarafina! on Youth Day itself.
“We’re reclaiming Soweto’s place as the heart of youth activism,” says Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor Dada Morero. “Sarafina! It isn’t just a musical, it’s a reminder of what courage looks like when led by young people. That message couldn’t be more urgent right now.”
The Soweto Theatre, along with its Gibson Kente Theatre, Yellow and Blue spaces, and newly added Container venues, will be buzzing from 11 am each day. There’s something for everyone, and it’s all happening in a space that has long stood for freedom of expression and the power of performance.
What’s Happening and When
14 June
The weekend kicks off with interactive youth workshops and creative sessions around the Soweto Theatre precinct. Think conversation, collaboration, and young voices taking up space.
15 June
Grab a blanket for an outdoor screening of the original Sarafina! film, paired with vibrant art installations and a live Amapiano line-up that keeps things very 2025.
16 June – Youth Day
This is the main event. The forecourt programme starts the day with drumming, dance, live music and storytelling, followed by the big one: a live concert version of Sarafina! that promises goosebumps. Stick around for community brunch, dance battles, a prize-giving, and a whole lot of local talent on show.
Whether you grew up with the Sarafina! soundtrack on loop or you’re discovering it for the first time, this is your chance to experience it in the place where its heartbeat began. It’s not just a show. It’s history, and it’s happening now.
All activities and performances across 14–16 June are FREE of charge and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served. Families, schools, and youth organisations are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot and enjoy the full experience.
