The underdogs have captured everything that makes World Cup football so captivating; belief, courage and resilience.

If this World Cup has taught us anything, it’s that no team is guaranteed victory. The Round of 16 has arrived with plenty of familiar giants still standing, but it’s the tournament’s underdogs that have stolen the show.
From Norway’s shock victory over five-time champions Brazil to Morocco proudly carrying Africa’s hopes, the knockout stage has reminded us that the World Cup is where underdogs become household names.
Some have already earned their place in the quarter-finals, while others are one result away. Together, they are reminding us why this tournament remains football’s greatest stage for unlikely heroes.
Every World Cup produces a team that nobody sees coming. This year, it’s Norway. Norway have gone from dark horses to genuine contenders after pulling off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, sending five-time champions Brazil crashing out of the competition. With Erling Haaland leading the line and Martin Odegaard pulling the strings in midfield, Norway have shown that they have the quality, composure and belief to trouble any team. For years, Norway watched the World Cup from afar. Now they’re back with a point to prove - and they are proving it.
Calling Morocco underdogs is becoming increasingly difficult with every passing match. Their historic run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals was meant to be a one-off. Four years later, Morocco have returned with the same belief and even bigger ambitions. Morocco eased past Canada to secure another quarter-final appearance, relying on disciplined defending, composure and confidence that have made them one of the tournament’s toughest teams to break down. Every victory carries added significance. Morocco aren’t just playing for themselves, they are carrying the hopes of millions of supporters across Africa.
While others have stolen the headlines, Paraguay have quietly let their football do the talking. After stunning Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, Paraguay pushed France all the way in the Round of 16, refusing to go down without a fight. Their World Cup adventure has come to an end, but Paraguay reminded the football world exactly what they are capable of. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers, producing a series of impressive displays between the posts. Some World Cup stories are remembered long after the trophy is lifted and underdogs often write the best ones.
The United States were never among the tournament favourites but they have shown that they are more than capable of challenging football’s established nations. A confident victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina secured their place in the Round of 16, where their spirited campaign came to an end at the hands of a ruthless Belgium team. Despite the defeat, the United States have demonstrated the progress they’ve made and why they can no longer be overlooked at major tournaments. Their World Cup may be over but the Americans leave with every reason to believe their best days are still ahead.
Colombia have flown under the radar, but their performances have demanded attention. A hard-fought victory over Ghana booked Colombia a place in the Round of 16 which served as a reminder that they don’t need to dominate matches to control them, relying instead on organisation and efficiency. They may not attract the same attention as Brazil or Argentina, but Colombia have emerged as one of the tournament's dark horses. After missing out on previous editions, Colombia are chasing their best-ever World Cup finish. With James Rodriguez leading the side in what could be his final World Cup, the veteran playmaker will be hoping to leave one last unforgettable mark when Colombia face Switzerland tonight at 10pm.
If there is one team capable of writing the next great World Cup upset story, it’s Egypt. Egypt are already making history. By reaching the Round of 16 for the first time at a FIFA World Cup, the Pharaohs have surpassed every previous men’s national team at the tournament. After overcoming Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout, they have a daunting meeting with current World Cup champions Argentina, where another upset would secure their place in the last eight. The odds may favour Argentina, but this World Cup has repeatedly shown that football is decided on the pitch, not on paper. Egypt have already demonstrated the resilience and belief needed to compete with anyone. As long as Mohamed Salah is on the pitch, Egypt will always carry a genuine threat against any opponent.
The race for the trophy continues, but the underdogs have already become the heartbeat of this tournament. Norway, Paraguay, Morocco, USA, Colombia, and Egypt may all be at different stages of their journeys, but together they have captured everything that makes World Cup football so captivating; the belief, courage and resilience to dream. The Round of 16 serves as a reminder that no prediction is ever guaranteed, and that’s what makes the World Cup football’s greatest spectacle.
