Johannesburg came alive at the Taste of Cultures Food Festival in Ormonde, Johannesburg at the Apartheid Museum. The event brought together people from all walks of life for a day filled with flavour, culture, and memorable experiences.

From the moment guests arrived in the early morning, it was clear that this was more than just a food festival. Visitors from around the world made their way through the gates, adding an international flair to the event. Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, one of the organisers from the museum, Mduduzi Ntuli, said welcoming international guests is something they have come to expect, with the museum continuing to attract people from across the globe.

People of all ages came together to experience South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and enjoy the festival’s wide range of food and entertainment.

Food vendors lined the venue with an exciting spread of dishes, from Indian cuisine to African favourites. Guests could grab breakfast, sample traditional meals, and settle into the atmosphere before taking part in one of the day’s standout experiences - a guided tour through the Apartheid Museum.

The museum tour proved to be one of the highlights of the day. Visitors spent over an hour walking through exhibitions that reflect South Africa’s rich journey - learning more about the country’s path towards unity and justice. Historic photographs, powerful displays, and films offered an immersive experience and gave guests a deeper appreciation of where the country has come from.

After the tour, attention shifted back to the festival grounds, where vendors were eager to share both their meals and the stories behind them. Whether guests were in the mood for pap (maize meal), tripe and cabbage, a kota (bunny chow), burger and chips or a glass of wine, there was something to suit every taste.

Adding even more energy to the day was live entertainment from the Soweto Family Band, who had the crowd singing and dancing along. Their performance brought warmth and excitement to the celebration, with festivalgoers gathering around to enjoy the music and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Beyond the food and performances, local creatives also showcased handcrafted items, portraits, and artwork, giving attendees even more to explore throughout the day.

Some visitors arrived dressed in traditional cultural attire, adding even more colour and character to an already vibrant celebration.

Once again, Johannesburg showed why it remains one of South Africa’s most dynamic cultural hubs - a city where different cultures meet, share space, and celebrate one another with warmth, pride, and a deep sense of community.
