Another domestic air route is making a comeback.
From 1 November 2026, CemAir is bringing back its direct flights from Johannesburg to Richards Bay, giving travellers easier access to the city’s beaches, nature reserves, and outdoor attractions.
Bookings are now open as CemAir restores a direct link between OR Tambo International Airport and Richards Bay Airport.
Beyond its beaches, Richards Bay plays a vital role in South Africa’s economy, as it is home to the country’s largest port by cargo volume and Africa’s largest coal export terminal.
It isn’t just an important industrial centre, though, as it’s a popular starting point for exploring northern KwaZulu-Natal’s best coastal and wildlife attractions.
According to CemAir, the decision to reinstate the route follows growing demand for improved regional air connectivity between Gauteng and northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Announcing the return of the route, CemAir Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh said: “Richards Bay is a key economic hub that plays an important role in South Africa’s industrial landscape, and we know there has been strong demand for reliable air connectivity to the region.”
While the route will be welcomed by business travellers, it’s also good news for leisure travellers. Direct flights reconnect Johannesburg with one of South Africa’s leading industrial cities while making it easier to swap a long road trip for a short flight to enjoy easier access to the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
